How the quilt top is assembled
- Make two strip sets. Join 5½-inch strips of red-check and mottled-gray flannel as directed in the pattern.
- Cut and join the segments. Cut the strip sets into fourteen segments and sew them together to make seven four-patch blocks.
- Build the center column. Arrange and join three blocks in a column.
- Add the borders. Frame the center with the red-plaid inner border, gray-check middle border, and red-and-gray diagonal-plaid outer border.
- Finish the quilt. Layer the top with batting and backing, baste the layers, quilt as desired, and bind with the specified diagonal-plaid flannel.

Flannel preparation and sewing tips
Missouri Star Quilt Company’s March 19, 2026 guide describes flannel as a woven fabric that is often cotton, though wool and synthetic blends are also available. It explains that brushing, or “napping,” raises the surface and contributes to flannel’s soft, warm feel. These are the guide’s descriptions, not specifications for every flannel fabric. - Adapt sewing tools if useful. Its suggestions include a longer stitch, a 90/14 needle, and a walking foot to help guide thicker layers evenly. These are optional trade tips, not requirements listed in the quilt pattern. Check that a walking foot is compatible with your sewing machine before buying one.
Choosing supplies or a ready-made quilt
If you are making this pattern, the key purchase decisions are coordinated flannel yardage, backing, and batting. Compare your fabric’s usable width with the pattern’s 42-inch assumption, and consider whether the prints will work with the cut pieces. The batting size is specified in the materials list.

If you are comparing finished bed quilts instead, look at dimensions and mattress drop, fiber and fill, piecing and quilting construction, available sizes, and the seller’s care instructions. For example, Choices Quilts describes its own bedspread quilts as cotton patchwork with cotton batting and backing, and says its products are hand-quilted and machine washable in a front-load machine with mild detergent.
