Airlines finance aircraft with a portfolio rather than a single loan. A delivery may combine the airline’s cash and pre-delivery payments with a commercial-bank facility, a lessor purchase, a capital-markets issue, an export-credit agency (ECA) guarantee or loan, and private credit insurance. The decisive questions are who owns the aircraft, who lends against it, who bears residual-value risk, and which future cash flows repay the debt.
In a secured purchase loan, the airline owns the aircraft and mortgages it to lenders. In an operating lease, a lessor owns the aircraft and collects rent, taking residual-value and remarketing risk. A finance lease places an aircraft-owning special-purpose vehicle (SPV) between the airline and its lenders; lease rentals are designed to repay the SPV’s borrowing. ECA-backed and insurance-backed deals usually use that same SPV structure.

Why do airlines use several forms of aircraft finance?
Aircraft cost too much and last too long for most carriers to fund every delivery from one source. A fleet plan creates different funding needs: deposits are paid before delivery, the final purchase price is due at delivery, and the aircraft must remain financeable through changing fuel prices, routes, interest rates and credit conditions. Matching each need with a different source can lower concentration risk and preserve liquidity.
Boeing’s 2025 delivery-finance taxonomy groups the main categories as cash, lessor financing, capital markets, bank debt, export credit and credit-enhanced financing. Those labels describe sources, not mutually exclusive products. For example, a lessor can borrow in the capital markets, while an ECA may guarantee a bank loan to an SPV that leases the aircraft to the airline.

The funding decision also allocates economic risks. Ownership determines who receives the aircraft’s residual value at the end of a lease and who must remarket it. Security documents determine how quickly a lender can repossess or sell an aircraft after default. Accounting rules determine how leases and debt appear in financial statements, while export-content and country rules can determine whether official support is available at all.
How is an aircraft purchase funded from deposit to delivery?
Funding normally arrives in stages. Pre-delivery payments (PDPs) are made to the manufacturer before the aircraft is delivered; the final delivery payment is then financed or paid in cash. PDPs can be funded with bank facilities, capital-markets proceeds or a lessor commitment. The evidence available does not establish a current global percentage split among those sources, so any universal market-share claim would be misleading.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCash and equity
Cash reserves, operating cash flow and new equity can pay PDPs, the buyer’s down payment and any amount lenders will not finance. Cash reduces interest expense and avoids documentation, but it ties up liquidity that may be needed for maintenance, fuel hedging, payroll or disruption recovery. Airlines commonly use cash equity alongside debt or a lease rather than choosing cash for the whole aircraft.
Commercial bank debt
A bank can lend directly to the airline or to an SPV that owns the aircraft. Typical collateral includes a first-priority aircraft mortgage, assignments of lease rentals and insurance proceeds, manufacturer-warranty rights, and a pledge of the SPV’s shares. A strong airline credit may obtain competitive pricing, but the facility can contain financial covenants, maintenance requirements, restrictions on transfers and a refinancing obligation when the loan matures.
Operating leases and sale-leasebacks
Under an operating lease, the lessor buys and owns the aircraft and leases it to the airline for a contracted period. The airline avoids the largest purchase payment and can add or remove capacity more flexibly. The lessor assumes residual-value, remarketing and asset-management risk, and prices the rent for aircraft type, age, expected market rent, maintenance reserves, airline credit and projected residual value.
A sale-leaseback releases capital from an aircraft the airline already owns. The airline sells the aircraft to a lessor, receives cash, and immediately leases it back. The transaction can improve liquidity without changing the aircraft’s operation, but it replaces ownership value with a continuing rent obligation and may restrict future modifications, transfers or early termination.

Finance leases
A finance lease is economically closer to secured borrowing than to a short operating lease. A bankruptcy-remote SPV owns the aircraft, borrows against it, and leases it to the airline on rentals calibrated to repay the borrowing. The lender receives the aircraft mortgage, an assignment of lease rights and a pledge of SPV equity. A purchase option at lease expiry is common in insurance-backed structures.
Capital-markets funding
Large airlines and lessors can issue secured or unsecured notes, private placements, enhanced equipment trust certificates (EETCs) or asset-backed securities (ABS). EETCs place aircraft or aircraft pools in a trust and use a payment waterfall to allocate claims among investor classes. ABS transactions securitize lease or aircraft cash flows. These tools can provide long tenor and diversify banks, but they require scale, ratings or extensive investor disclosure, trustees, waterfall mechanics and substantial legal execution.
Who lends to airlines for aircraft purchases?
The lender is often a group rather than one institution. Commercial banks provide secured loans and working facilities. Operating lessors supply both ownership and financing capacity. Institutional investors buy airline, lessor or EETC debt. ECAs support exports tied to their home-country manufacturers. Private insurers can protect a bank or bondholder against non-payment, allowing a commercial lender to offer longer or larger financing.
In every structure, analyze the ultimate risk holder. A lessor bears the aircraft’s residual value; a bank relies on collateral and airline cash generation; an ECA or insurer takes defined political or credit risk under its policy; and capital-markets investors rely on legal priority and the transaction’s payment waterfall. The same aircraft can therefore have several layers of debt and credit support.

What does an export-credit agency actually do?
The OECD describes ECAs as government-backed institutions that support national exporters competing for overseas sales. Official support can be a direct credit, refinancing or interest-rate support, or “pure cover” such as insurance or a guarantee for credit provided by a private financial institution. OECD disciplines impose maximum official-support terms, aircraft-sector rules, minimum-premium frameworks and governance expectations.
An ECA is not simply a discount lender. It checks the airline or guarantor’s creditworthiness, the transaction’s export content, country and political risks, aircraft collateral, repayment profile and legal enforceability. The official support may cover a bank’s eligible exposure, but the airline remains responsible for paying the debt and complying with the finance documents. Exposure fees vary with risk and terms and are part of the all-in cost.

The standard ECA finance-lease structure
- Form an SPV. The parties establish a bankruptcy-remote company in a tax-neutral jurisdiction acceptable to the lenders, airline and ECA.
- Arrange the debt. The SPV raises an ECA-supported loan and, where necessary, additional commercial debt.
- Acquire the aircraft. The SPV buys and owns the aircraft from the manufacturer.
- Lease to the airline. The SPV signs a finance lease under which the airline must make scheduled rentals.
- Repay the borrowing. Lease rentals pay the ECA-supported and commercial loans according to their amortization schedules.
- Perfect security. A security trustee holds the first-priority aircraft mortgage, assignment of lease rights and insurance proceeds, and pledge of the SPV’s shares.
This separation lets the ECA and lenders underwrite an aircraft-owning entity while the airline operates the aircraft. It also makes the security package and enforcement path central to the credit decision.
What are the current U.S. and European ECA parameters?
For eligible new U.S.-manufactured aircraft, EXIM Bank’s current 2026 aircraft guidance allows repayment of up to 12 years, with quarterly or semiannual installments amortizing to zero. Support can reach up to 85% of the net U.S. contract price, subject to U.S.-content limits and transaction-risk constraints. EXIM generally lends to, or guarantees a financial institution’s loan to, an SPV that leases the aircraft to the airline; lending directly to the airline is described as exceptional.

EXIM evaluates the airline or guarantor, the finance-lease structure, first-priority mortgage and other mitigants. The exposure fee changes with the assessed risk and terms, so the 85% figure is a maximum eligibility parameter, not a promise that every transaction will receive that amount or that it will be the cheapest source.
European Airbus transactions can use coordinated ECA cover. Germany’s Federal Export Credit Guarantees describes a first-demand Airbus guarantee covering bad-debt losses, an SPV loan and a subsequent finance or operating lease. Its product normally uses a 12-year credit period and can coordinate support from bpifrance, UK Export Finance and Euler Hermes. Eligibility, export content, country risk and the participating agencies’ capacity still have to be confirmed for each delivery.
How does private non-payment insurance compare with ECA support?
Private non-payment insurance is a credit-risk mitigation tool: a private insurer, rather than a government ECA, covers a lender’s non-payment of principal or interest. AFIC supports Embraer and Boeing aircraft, while Balthazar supports Airbus and ATR aircraft. These deals generally use an orphan SPV finance lease, debt of up to 85% of aircraft value and 10- or 12-year amortization, secured by the aircraft, lease, insurance policy and SPV shares.
The policy can cover 100% of the insured loan and is usually paid upfront. After a default, insurers typically continue scheduled payments for a policy period usually between 18 and 36 months, or until the aircraft is disposed of, subject to the policy wording. That support gives the lender time to enforce security or sell the aircraft rather than demanding immediate recovery from the airline.

Insurance can be more flexible than OECD-bound ECA finance, including the possibility of balloon amortization. The trade-offs are a non-refundable premium, insurer downgrade or insolvency risk, finite underwriting capacity and insurance-regulation complexity. The lender must understand exclusions, waiting periods, claims procedures and whether policy proceeds actually match the debt balance at each stage.
Should an airline buy, lease or use a sale-leaseback?
There is no universally cheapest choice. Compare the complete cash cost and the risks transferred, not just the quoted interest rate or monthly rent.
| Structure | Aircraft owner | Primary residual-value risk | Cash and control profile | Typical financing features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cash or secured purchase loan | Airline | Airline | Large purchase funding; airline controls disposition, subject to lender covenants | Mortgage, insurance and warranty assignments; bank debt may require covenants and refinancing |
| Operating lease | Lessor | Lessor | Lower upfront purchase cash and greater fleet flexibility; continuing rent | Rent reflects aircraft, age, maintenance reserves, airline credit and expected residual value |
| Sale-leaseback | Lessor after sale | Lessor, subject to lease terms | Releases cash trapped in an owned aircraft; airline gives up ownership value | Lease rent, return conditions and transfer restrictions govern economics |
| Finance lease | Usually an SPV | Often largely allocated to the airline through the lease economics | Debt-like rentals and a scheduled ownership-style payoff | SPV borrowing, aircraft mortgage, lease assignment and share pledge |
| EETC or ABS | Trust, issuer or SPV structure | Depends on documents and asset pool | Long-tenor market funding; complex waterfall and disclosure | Investor classes, trustee controls, ratings and substantial execution work |
Model each option over the period the airline expects to operate the aircraft. Include deposits, delivery cash, rent or interest, ECA exposure fees, insurance premiums, maintenance reserves, legal and structuring costs, taxes, expected residual proceeds, refinancing and break costs. A lower monthly payment can conceal a balloon, a large return-condition bill or a high upfront premium.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do accounting, covenants and collateral affect the decision?
Under IFRS 16, an airline generally records an operating-lease right-of-use asset and lease liability, so describing an operating lease as automatically “off balance sheet” is unsafe without jurisdiction-specific accounting analysis. Finance leases and secured loans are also debt-like economically, even where legal ownership sits with an SPV. U.S. GAAP and local rules can produce different presentation and expense patterns.

Lenders may require minimum liquidity, leverage or fixed-charge ratios, restrictions on additional liens, maintenance and utilization reporting, insurance covenants, and limits on aircraft sales, substitutions or subleases. A lessor may require maintenance reserves and detailed return conditions. Capital-markets and ECA structures add trustee directions, reporting undertakings and cross-default provisions.
Security documents should be read as carefully as the interest margin. A first-priority mortgage is useful only if it is properly registered and enforceable where the aircraft is located. Lease assignments, insurance proceeds, manufacturer warranties and SPV-share pledges determine who controls cash and the aircraft after a default. Cross-collateralization can protect lenders but may tie several aircraft or subsidiaries together.

What happens if the airline stops paying?
The immediate response depends on the documents and the law of the aircraft’s registration, location and the airline’s insolvency forum. A payment default can trigger cure periods, default interest, cash trapping, lender notices and a requirement to maintain insurance and the aircraft. ECA or insurer claims normally require strict compliance with notice, information and loss-mitigation procedures.
If the aircraft is leased, the lessor or security trustee may seek possession, deregistration and export, subject to court orders and applicable international-law mechanisms. The aircraft may be re-leased, sold or held while repairs and maintenance records are checked. In a finance lease, the lender’s practical recovery depends on the mortgage, lease assignment, SPV pledge and the aircraft’s marketability.

- Security: verify mortgage registration, lease and insurance assignments, warranty rights, SPV-share pledges and trustee powers.
- Accounting and disclosure: obtain advice for the airline’s reporting jurisdiction and covenant calculations rather than relying on marketing labels.
- Default plan: document notices, cure periods, claims evidence, repossession logistics, deregistration and aircraft remarketing responsibilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an airline finance pre-delivery payments before it owns the aircraft?
Yes. PDP facilities can be arranged through banks, capital markets or a lessor commitment before the manufacturer delivers the aircraft. The facility normally converts, is refinanced or is repaid when the delivery financing closes.
Does an ECA guarantee pay the airline’s debt after any default?
No. It protects the covered lender exposure under the guarantee and its conditions. The transaction must satisfy eligibility, notice, documentation, security and loss-mitigation requirements, and uncovered amounts remain subject to the underlying finance documents.
Why might two aircraft with the same list price have different lease rents?
Rent reflects more than price: aircraft age and configuration, maintenance reserves, expected market rent, residual-value forecasts, airline credit, lease length and return conditions all matter. A lessor also prices the cost of its own funding and the risk of remarketing the aircraft.
What is a balloon payment in aircraft finance?
A balloon is principal left unpaid until the end of the scheduled term, leaving a residual payment that must be refinanced, paid from sale proceeds or covered by another source. It can reduce interim installments but increases exposure to interest rates and aircraft values at maturity.
