How Baidu’s ERNIE-Image Turns Short Prompts Into Detailed Visuals

ERNIE-Image pairs text-to-image generation with a Prompt Enhancer that expands concise requests into more structured visual descriptions. Here are its documented variants, intended strengths and limits.

Baidu’s ERNIE-Image uses a separate Prompt Enhancer to expand a brief request into a more structured image description before generation. That can give the model more explicit guidance about objects, relationships, composition, text and style; it does not guarantee that it will infer every unstated preference or render every detail correctly.

How does ERNIE-Image turn a short prompt into a detailed image?

Baidu describes ERNIE-Image as an open text-to-image model built around an 8-billion-parameter, single-stream Diffusion Transformer. Its lightweight Prompt Enhancer is a distinct component: it takes concise user intent and expands it into a richer description that can spell out visual attributes, spatial relationships, scene composition, text content and style. The model then generates an image from that description. Baidu’s project README and its technical report describe this design.

The distinction matters. Prompt enhancement adds structure to the instruction; it is not evidence that the system knows what a user left out. If a request says “a red umbrella on a rainy street,” the enhancer may make the scene more specific, but the exact framing, mood or visual style still depends on the prompt and the model’s interpretation.

What kinds of images is it designed to handle?

Baidu emphasizes complex instruction following, text rendering and compositions where placement and relationships matter. Its examples and descriptions include posters, infographics, UI-like images, comics, storyboards and multi-panel visuals, alongside photographic and stylized images. These are the developers’ stated strengths, not guarantees for every prompt or language. The Baidu model card and project README present the intended use cases.

  • Prompt fidelity: whether the image includes the requested objects, attributes and relationships.
  • Text rendering: whether wording is spelled correctly, in the requested language, and placed where intended.
  • Layout: whether panels, poster elements or other parts of a composition appear in the right arrangement.
  • Style: whether the result suits a photographic, illustrative or design-oriented purpose.

For painting and visual reference work, the layout and style claims may be useful starting points, but generated images should be checked against the intended composition and details rather than treated as an exact visual brief.

Which ERNIE-Image variant should you choose?

Variant Documented settings How Baidu positions it
ERNIE-Image SFT Typically 50 inference steps; CFG 4.0, according to the project README. The standard model, described as stronger for general capability and instruction fidelity.
ERNIE-Image-Turbo 8 inference steps; CFG 1.0, according to the project README. Described as optimized with DMD and reinforcement learning for faster generation and higher aesthetics.

These are maintainer-reported configurations, not measured latency guarantees. Step counts alone do not tell you how long a generation will take on a particular GPU, image size or runtime. The project README also says the model can run on consumer GPUs with 24 GB of VRAM; treat that as Baidu’s deployment statement, not a universal minimum for every configuration. See the README for the project’s settings.

What do Baidu’s benchmark numbers show?

The project publishes results for GenEval, OneIG and LongText-Bench. In Baidu’s README, the standard ERNIE-Image entry on GenEval is 0.8856 without Prompt Enhancer and 0.8728 with it. Category results move in different directions, so the overall figures do not support a claim that enhancement raises every score.

For the Prompt-Enhancer-enabled standard model, Baidu reports LongText-Bench scores of 0.9804 for English and 0.9661 for Chinese, with a listed average of 0.9733. These are project-reported benchmark results, not an independent evaluation or a universal measure of image quality. The outcome depends on the benchmark, model configuration and evaluation protocol; it should not be read as a general ranking for every visual task. The tables appear in the ERNIE-Image README.

How to judge whether it fits your work

Choose a representative task rather than relying on a broad “best model” claim. For a painting reference, for example, test whether it preserves the number and placement of subjects, follows requested lighting and palette, and produces a composition you can use. For a poster or storyboard, inspect spelling and panel layout as well as visual style.

Rank #4
  • Compare prompt fidelity on the objects, attributes and relationships that matter to your image.
  • Check text for exact spelling, language, length and placement if the image includes lettering.
  • Judge style against the intended use, not just whether an output looks polished.
  • For local use, evaluate actual generation time and memory on your target hardware; inference-step counts are not substitutes for those measurements.
  • Review the license for the specific downloadable model or asset you plan to use. The technical report discusses released weights, but its statements do not establish the terms attached to every asset.

What is not established about hosted access?

Baidu’s project page links to model repositories and demo destinations, but availability may depend on account, region and platform status. Current API pricing, quotas, access requirements and geographic availability are not established here; no such terms should be inferred from the existence of an API reference. Check Baidu’s live service documentation before relying on hosted access.
