Hazelett told PEOPLE that she and her husband became interested in porch pumpkin decorating after he found a podcast interview with Heather Torres, founder of Porch Pumpkins. The work continues through picking, cleaning, treating, loading, transport, unloading, and arranging the pumpkins on site. Hazelett estimated that each pumpkin is handled at least five times.
