India’s benchmark stock indexes ended a four-session losing streak on Monday, October 5, 2026. The Sensex rose 472.77 points, or 0.66%, to 72,382.47, while the Nifty 50 gained 133.80 points, or 0.60%, to 22,555.75, according to The Economic Times and Moneycontrol. The rebound followed a sharp intraday reversal, and declining shares still outnumbered advancing ones on the BSE.
How Indian benchmarks closed on October 5
The Sensex finished at 72,382.47, up 472.77 points (0.66%). The Nifty 50 closed at 22,555.75, a rise of 133.80 points (0.60%). Both indexes had fallen for four straight sessions before Monday’s gains.
Why did Sensex and Nifty rise?
Contemporaneous market coverage cited easing crude oil prices and supportive global cues as tailwinds. The Economic Times reported Brent at around $101–102 a barrel and the US 10-year Treasury yield easing toward 5.21%. It also linked weaker US jobs data to reduced expectations of aggressive US rate hikes and improved risk sentiment. These were reported explanations for the session, not proof that any single factor caused the gains or that oil had ceased to be a risk.

The Economic Times described the month’s start as cautious amid a worsening US-Iran conflict and an expected central-bank rate increase at the latest policy review. That was an expectation reported at the time, not an announced decision. Geopolitical tensions and elevated crude therefore remained part of the market backdrop even as oil moderated.

A volatile session, not a straight climb
The Nifty moved between an intraday low of 22,397.10 and a high of 22,621.80. After opening gains, the benchmarks slipped into negative territory as investors took profits; they recovered in the second half, with the Nifty ending above 22,500. The Economic Times also reported that both benchmarks had risen nearly 1% earlier in the session before turning lower.
The close was positive, but the path to it shows why the day should not be read as a steady, uninterrupted advance. Moneycontrol’s session coverage noted the afternoon recovery.

Market breadth and sector performance were mixed
The Economic Times counted 2,052 advancing shares, 2,448 declining shares and 260 unchanged among 4,760 traded on the BSE. More shares fell than rose, so the benchmark gains did not reflect a uniformly positive session across stocks.
Sector performance offered a different but still uneven picture. Moneycontrol reported gains across sectoral indices except pharma, noted strength in FMCG, and described healthcare as weak. The distinction matters: a number of sector indexes can rise while declines still outnumber advances among individual shares.
Foreign investors sold while domestic institutions bought
The Economic Times reported that foreign portfolio investors were net sellers of ₹4,699 crore, while domestic institutional investors were net buyers of ₹5,181 crore on October 5. The opposing flows provide context for the session, but one day of buying and selling does not establish that either group’s broader trend had changed.
What market observers said about the rebound
Gaurav Garg, head of research at Lemonn, said: “From here, the sustainability of the rebound will depend on whether fresh buying replaces short covering and bargain hunting.” His comment frames the key uncertainty: whether demand persists beyond investors covering short positions or buying after the recent decline.

Dinshaw Irani, MD and CEO of Helios India, told The Economic Times: “The silver lining around all these gathering dark clouds is the September quarter results that will kick off from next week onwards.” The comment referred to the earnings season then expected to begin the following week; it was not a report of results already released.

The four-day losing run ended, and easing crude alongside supportive global cues were cited as supports. But the intraday pullback, negative BSE breadth, continuing foreign net selling and geopolitical uncertainty temper the significance of a single-session rebound. The October 5 close is a historical snapshot, not a current market signal or recommendation.
