Chakhesang shawls are woven social records: their bands, colours and motifs can signal honour, achievement, mediation and ceremonial meaning. Their codes belong to particular shawl types and arrangements—not to a universal colour chart—and are sustained by women weavers who pass the skill from mother to daughter.
What makes a Chakhesang shawl meaningful?
Chakhesang shawls come from the Chakhesang Naga community of Nagaland and are made mainly in Phek, Kohima and Dimapur. The GI application for the shawls describes different types for feasts and ceremonies, with horizontal bands, coloured lines and motifs arranged to convey distinct meanings. Reading one therefore means looking at the whole design in context: the shawl type, its colour and band arrangement, the wearer’s gender, age and status, and the occasion all matter.
Women are the tradition’s weavers. The GI application records that the skill is passed from mother to daughter and is held in high esteem as a reflection of social history. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s 2025 craft brief also describes the tradition as woven through generations.

What do the different Chakhesang shawls signify?
Some names and meanings are recorded in the GI application, while a 2025 DPIIT brief distinguishes Rira for men from Rura for women. The available descriptions do not give an equally detailed account of every variant, so these distinctions should not be treated as a complete catalogue of all local practices.

| Shawl | Wearer or standing | Recorded meaning and design | Event or use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thüpikhü / Thsüketsüra / Hapidasa | Reserved for a person worthy of the highest honour; the GI application does not specify a gender. | Represents the highest honour. The application does not provide a single fixed colour code for it. | Feasts and ceremonies are among the documented contexts for Chakhesang shawls; a more specific occasion for this type is not stated in the GI application. |
| Rira | The GI application associates it with a man of warrior status. The 2025 DPIIT brief calls Rira a men’s shawl. | Red bands recall blood shed by forefathers; black and narrow red bands represent ongoing struggle with hardship; a small green line signifies victory; the central design represents old weapons. | The cited descriptions do not name one specific ceremony for Rira. |
| Rura | The 2025 DPIIT brief identifies it as a women’s shawl. | The brief describes distinct red, black and white wool patterns and cultural significance, but does not give a detailed Rura-specific motif or colour interpretation. | The brief names feasts, peace and reconciliation, blessings from parents to sons, and paddy-yield ceremonies as meanings carried by Chakhesang shawls generally, not as uses exclusive to Rura. |
| Samakhü / Chutsüra / Metisa | Worn by men and women who mediate disputes, according to the GI application. | The application does not provide a specific colour or motif interpretation for this type. | Associated with the role of dispute mediation; a particular ceremony is not stated. |
The table brings together descriptions from the GI application and DPIIT’s 2025 craft brief. Their accounts are not identical in detail: the GI application gives the warrior-status interpretation of Rira, while the government brief explicitly pairs Rira with men and Rura with women. The brief does not explain how its Rura classification relates to the other named types, so the terms should not be collapsed into one scheme.
What do Chakhesang shawl colours mean?
There is no evidence here for a rule such as “red always means one thing” across every Chakhesang shawl. The GI application emphasizes that a shawl’s meaning depends on the colours and arrangement of its bands. Its clearest colour reading is specific to Rira: red bands evoke ancestral bloodshed, black and narrow red bands signify continuing hardship, and a small green line represents victory. Read those colours as parts of that design, not as a general Naga colour key.

What do the motifs represent?
Community heritage documentation records these motif interpretations. Their meanings belong to the documented Chakhesang vocabulary; the GI application also notes that a motif’s reading is shaped by its band colours and arrangement.
- Elephant: strength and abundance.
- Mithun: wealth and prosperity.
- Animal head: the honour of having performed a feast of merit.
- Star: happiness and contentment.
- Peacock: beauty.
- Flower: shared happiness.
- Butterfly: good spirits.
- Sun and moon: eternity.
- Parallel pleats: milestones achieved through toil.
The GI application also lists a bullhorn among recorded motifs, but the cited documentation does not state its meaning. A Naga shawl in the National Crafts Museum collection offers a useful comparison, not a Chakhesang interpretation: its cowrie-shell “circular moons” are described as signs of heroic valour and the economic and social status of privileged members of a chieftain’s family. That example shows how textiles elsewhere in Naga culture can encode rank, but it should not be used to assign the same code to Chakhesang designs.

- Machine pedal embroidered. Cotton
Are Chakhesang shawls handwoven, and what are they made from?
Yes. The GI application documents weaving on a Naga tension loom, along with preparation and finishing techniques including warping, stitching, hemming and edge binding. It groups basic construction and pattern approaches as horizontal bands or lines, woven patterns, needle work, and tuck-in or hemming work.
Documented fibres include cotton, nettle, Deccan jute and debrege bark. Cotton is spun, prepared and naturally dyed before weaving. For the less conventional plant fibres, the application describes extracting material from bark, boiling it with water and wood ash, cleaning and handspinning it, then weaving it. Locally sourced forest ingredients are used for natural dyes. DPIIT’s 2025 brief describes Rira and Rura as using red, black and white wool; the GI application’s broader material list also includes cotton and plant fibres. These descriptions need not mean that every shawl uses the same fibre or palette.

Where are Chakhesang shawls made, and how can a buyer ask about provenance?
The GI application identifies the Chakhesang tribe of Nagaland as the shawls’ source and names Phek, Kohima and Dimapur as the main production areas. India’s GI registry lists Chakhesang Woman Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, in T. Chikpi, Pfutsero, Phek, and TRIFED’s regional office as authorized users. An authorized-user listing is a provenance lead, not proof that any particular item currently offered for sale is authentic or available through that organization.
For a specific shawl, ask the seller who made it, where it was woven, whether it is handwoven, which fibre and dye were used, and what GI-related provenance can be documented. Those questions help distinguish a named cultural textile from a product described only with a broad regional label; they do not replace item-level verification.
