A secondary how-to describes making small craft molds from 100% silicone caulk and cornstarch, with a suggested starting ratio of one part of each by volume. The matching Make: project article establishes the project context but its accessible text does not give those measurements. Treat the recipe below as that how-to’s instructions—not as a tested or guaranteed formula.
What this putty recipe is for
The recipe is intended to make a mold around a small master object, which can then be used to cast craft materials. Make: describes casting as useful beyond jewelry and decorative crafts, including for custom knobs, pulls, and art pieces. The TechBloat how-to names resin, plaster, wax, and clay as possible casting materials; suitability can depend on the specific material and mold, and the reviewed sources do not independently verify those uses.
Make: published Haley Pierson-Cox’s project article on June 9, 2015, with an April 1, 2018 date displayed on the page, and links to a video tutorial by Mark Montano. Its accessible text does not include the detailed recipe measurements. The measurements and method here come from the separate TechBloat how-to; the project context is in Make:.

Ingredients and starting ratio
- 100% silicone caulk
- Cornstarch
- Optional: a small amount of glycerin or water, as described by the TechBloat how-to
TechBloat suggests starting with one part caulk to one part cornstarch by volume, then adjusting the texture in small increments. This is that page’s recommendation, not a formula independently validated by the sources cited here. Do not assume that changing brands, ingredients, or proportions will produce the same working or curing behavior.
How to make and use the putty
- Prepare first. Set up a ventilated work area, protect the work surface, and have the clean master object ready before mixing.
- Combine the ingredients. Mix the caulk and cornstarch at the suggested starting ratio. If needed, add a small amount of glycerin or water and adjust gradually, following the recipe source’s advice.
- Knead until uniform. Work the mixture until it appears consistent, as the TechBloat instructions describe.
- Form the mold. Press the master object into the putty to create its impression.
- Let it set, then demold. The source says to allow the putty to set before removing the master. It does not establish a dependable working-time or cure-time figure; conditions and materials can affect both.
Safety and food-use limits
Use ventilation, particularly with standard acetoxy silicone, and follow the handling directions on the specific materials you choose. Keep the mixture away from eyes and skin and avoid treating household ingredients as harmless simply because they are familiar.

Do not use this craft putty or a mold made from it for food unless every ingredient and the finished mold are specifically food-safe. Ordinary craft silicone caulk and household additives should not be presumed food-safe.
Homemade putty or purpose-made silicone putty?
These are distinct options. The caulk-and-cornstarch recipe is a DIY approach described by TechBloat; purpose-made two-part silicone putty has its own manufacturer instructions and product-specific properties. For example, Solid Solutions instructs users to mix its putty 1:1 by weight and lists a 15–30 minute cure. Those specifications apply to that product, not homemade caulk putty. The retailer also advises ventilation, avoiding eye and skin contact, and wearing protective gloves and glasses. See Solid Solutions’ product guidance.

Compare options using criteria that matter for your project:
- Mixing: the DIY source gives a volume ratio; Solid Solutions gives a weight ratio for its own putty.
- Time: the purpose-made product’s listed cure time is product-specific; the DIY recipe has no established timing guarantee in the cited sources.
- Fit for the casting: check the product’s instructions and compatibility with the material you plan to cast, rather than assuming the homemade mixture and a purpose-made putty behave alike.
- Handling: follow the safety and use instructions for the exact material, including ventilation and protective equipment where specified.
A Fab Academy project team reported that Mold Star 30 offered its preferred balance of demolding flexibility and detail among the materials it tested. That is one project team’s observation, not a universal ranking or a guarantee for a particular mold. See the Fab Academy project.

What “reusable” does—and does not—promise
The recipe is presented as a reusable casting-mold approach, but the cited sources do not establish a reuse count, a guaranteed lifespan, or a success rate for the homemade mixture. Treat each mold’s durability as uncertain rather than planning around a specific number of casts.
