Christopher Moravec’s WhisperFrame listens for nearby speech, turns conversation into a topic prompt, and generates an image for a display. It does not simply illustrate each sentence: the system gathers snippets over time, uses a language model to identify a subject, then asks an image generator to make artwork. The exact pipeline and refresh timing have changed between versions.
How WhisperFrame turns conversation into an image
WhisperFrame is a conversation-responsive art display by developer and artist Christopher Moravec. Its premise is to make the shifting subject matter of a room visible: conversation becomes input for an evolving image rather than a transcript or set of meeting notes. Moravec describes the later version as focusing on topics, not people. In his May 23, 2025 account, he characterizes the work as painting a meeting’s “vibe,” not recording action items.

- Listen for speech. In the later rebuild described by Moravec, the system records when it detects likely human speech.
- Transcribe and collect snippets. Audio is converted to text, and the system accumulates transcript material rather than interpreting every utterance as a separate artwork.
- Select a topic and write an image prompt. A language model uses the collected text to choose a topic and shape it into a prompt for image generation.
- Generate and display artwork. An image-generation service creates a visual response, which appears on the frame’s screen.
The result is an interpretation of a conversation’s subject matter, not a literal visualization of every word. The sources describe no formal evaluation of transcription accuracy or image relevance, so WhisperFrame is best understood as an artistic experiment rather than a dependable record of what a room said.
Why the timing and technology depend on the version
WhisperFrame’s implementation has evolved. The models and timings reported for the earlier build should not be treated as specifications for the later rebuild or the current service.

These are reported details, not a guarantee of how quickly any particular display will update. The project page’s 5–20-minute range also means the five-minute intervals described in earlier accounts should not be presented as a universal current setting.
The display can influence what people talk about
Moravec noted a feedback effect in the earlier version: once people saw an image, they could start discussing it, making that subject more likely to appear in later topic selection. The frame therefore is not only a mirror of conversation. It can become part of the conversation and help steer what the system depicts next. This is a described possibility, not a measured result.

What happens to audio and transcripts
According to the operator’s project page and terms effective December 1, 2025, audio is sent to OpenAI for transcription and discarded after the transcription is received. Transcripts are held temporarily in the browser until an image is generated, then deleted. These are the operator’s statements about the service’s handling; they do not independently establish how a third-party processor retains or handles data.
Because the system processes ambient conversation, people in the room should know it is running and understand that audio is sent for transcription before using it in a shared or sensitive setting. The project’s art-making purpose does not make it a substitute for consent, meeting minutes, or a verified transcription workflow.

What a DIY setup involves
Moravec’s original setup was designed for a Raspberry Pi 4 with a display, and the project site describes configuring a Pi as a dedicated display. That is hardware context for someone exploring a build; the available information does not establish that a Raspberry Pi is required to use the current web service.
