Open Microsoft Paint, choose View, and turn on Gridlines. If the lines are not visible, maximize the window and zoom in substantially. The exact location of the control varies between modern Windows 11 Paint and older ribbon-based versions.

Add a grid in modern Microsoft Paint on Windows 11

  1. Open Start, type Paint, and press Enter. Microsoft includes Paint with Windows and documents this Start-menu search method: Microsoft Paint.
  2. Open an image, or choose New to create a blank canvas.
  3. Open View and select Gridlines.
  4. If the option is not immediately visible, check the view controls or the three-dot overflow menu. On some builds, a narrow Paint window hides controls.
  5. Zoom in using Paint’s zoom control. The grid can be difficult to see on a large image at low magnification.

Modern Paint is labeled “Paint: Refreshed for Windows 11,” but Microsoft’s public product page does not provide one universal, build-specific location for the Gridlines command. Current coverage reports that it appears through the app’s View controls, with placement affected by the Paint build and window width. See this current Paint grid guide for the reported modern interface.

Use Gridlines in classic Paint

Older ribbon-based versions of Paint, including the Windows 7-era interface, use a different path:

Do not assume this ribbon path applies to the current Windows 11 app. A Microsoft Q&A answer from November 15, 2011, documents this path for Windows 7 and notes that the Paint versions included with Windows XP and Vista did not provide the Ruler and Gridline options: Microsoft Q&A.

Gridlines are a temporary visual aid

Paint’s built-in Gridlines are intended to help you align pixels and objects while editing. They are different from lines drawn into the image.

  • Printable grid: A permanent grid that exists in the image or document being printed.
  • Ruler: Measurement markings around the canvas; not the same as gridlines.
  • Snap-to-grid: Automatic alignment of objects. Displaying Gridlines does not by itself establish that Paint has configurable snapping.

In normal use, built-in Gridlines are expected to disappear from the saved or exported image and should not be expected to print. Microsoft’s current Paint page lists tools such as Zoom, Pencil, Shapes, Selection, and—on supported Windows 11 releases—Layers, but it does not explicitly document Gridlines’ saving and printing behavior. The view-only behavior is reported by current practical coverage.

What to do if the grid is not showing

  1. Maximize Paint. A narrow window can move View commands into an overflow menu.
  2. Check View again. Look through the visible view controls and the three-dot menu for Gridlines.
  3. Toggle the option off and on. Reopen the image first if the display appears stuck.
  4. Zoom in. Use the bottom-right zoom control or try Ctrl++. The shortcut can vary with keyboard layout and Paint version.
  5. Confirm that the canvas is active. A separate preview, dialog, or image window may not display the overlay in the same way.
  6. Check your Paint version. Feature availability and control placement vary by Windows release and app build.
  7. Update Paint if appropriate. Microsoft says newer Paint features may require the latest version from the Microsoft Store, although that guidance is not specifically a guarantee about Gridlines: Microsoft Support.

If Gridlines is completely absent after these checks, your edition or build may not include the feature. Use the permanent-grid methods below or a graphics application with configurable grid controls.

How to make a permanent grid in Paint

Use this approach when the grid must remain visible in the finished image or appear when printed. Save a duplicate first, because these methods add real image content.

Draw the grid manually

  1. Use Save as to create a copy of the original image.
  2. Select the Line shape tool and choose a line color and thickness.
  3. Draw evenly spaced horizontal lines across the canvas.
  4. Draw evenly spaced vertical lines.
  5. Save the copy under a new filename.

If your Paint version supports constrained lines, holding Shift can help keep a line horizontal or vertical. Manually drawn lines are actual pixels, so they can be difficult to remove selectively later.

Paste a prepared grid image

You can also place a transparent PNG containing a grid over the artwork, then save a copy. This is faster for evenly spaced lines, but the result may be merged into the image rather than remaining independently editable. Microsoft lists Layers in supported current Paint releases, but availability and layer behavior vary by device and Windows version; do not assume a pasted grid will remain a reversible overlay in every build. Microsoft’s current feature overview is at microsoft.com/windows/paint.

Can I change the grid size, color, or spacing?

Paint does not expose an obvious, documented control for custom grid spacing, line thickness, color, measurement calibration, or snapping comparable to the controls in dedicated graphics and layout applications. The built-in grid is therefore best for visual alignment, especially when working on enlarged pixel art—not for calibrated technical drafting.

Choose the right kind of grid

Goal Best approach Important limitation
Align pixels while editing Paint’s built-in Gridlines Usually a temporary display overlay
Print graph paper or a measured layout A spreadsheet, presentation app, or grid generator Requires another application
Include visible lines in the final image Draw lines or paste a grid image The lines become image content
Keep the grid removable A layer-capable editor or compatible Paint build with Layers Feature availability varies
Make a technical or measured drawing Vector, diagramming, or CAD software Paint offers fewer layout controls
