Gemini 3 writes the comic story; NotebookLM turns that approved story into a structured storyboard. That combination is useful for planning a short comic, but it does not automatically deliver finished, lettered comic pages. You still need a separate image-generation or illustration tool for panel artwork and a layout tool for speech bubbles, captions, export, and final editing.
The practical workflow is:
idea → story bible → script → continuity check → NotebookLM storyboard → panel artwork → lettering → page layout
What this Gemini 3 and NotebookLM workflow actually produces
The demonstrated workflow is best understood as AI-assisted comic scripting and storyboarding, not a complete one-click comic-production system. Gemini handles the creative writing stage: premise, characters, conflict, dialogue, narration, tone, and ending. NotebookLM organizes the approved material and converts it into a page-by-page, panel-by-panel production plan.

NotebookLM can describe camera framing, settings, poses, expressions, actions, dialogue, captions, and continuity details. It does not, in this workflow, replace a comic-layout application or reliably handle typography, speech-bubble placement, print preparation, or final sequential-art production. The completed comic requires additional image, editing, and layout work.
This distinction matters because a storyboard is not finished artwork. It is the bridge between a script and the images that will eventually appear on the page.
The original demonstrated workflow uses a warm, slightly futuristic story about a human and robot falling in love, constrained to no more than five pages. The story emphasizes connection, choice, and humanity, with a sincere, bittersweet or hopeful ending.

Gemini 3: the writing stage
Use Gemini for brainstorming premises, developing characters, shaping the plot, adapting tone for an audience, writing dialogue and narration, and enforcing page or panel limits. Google’s current documentation lists Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Gemini 3 Flash, and Gemini 3 Pro, but access, usage limits, context windows, and features vary by plan and may change. Check Google’s current Gemini limits and upgrades documentation rather than treating any model or quota as permanent.
NotebookLM: the organization and storyboard stage
NotebookLM is designed around user-provided sources. It can work with copied text, documents, PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio, Google Docs, and Google Slides, then answer questions grounded in those materials. That makes it useful for keeping the approved script, character references, and continuity rules together.
According to Google’s NotebookLM documentation, the product is intended to provide source-grounded responses with citations. For a comic, that means you can ask it to transform an existing script without inviting it to invent a new plot.
Step 1: Define the comic before prompting
Decide these constraints first:
- Audience and age rating
- Genre and emotional tone
- Page count and panel range
- Main characters and their visual traits
- Setting and time period
- Publishing destination, such as a web page, social carousel, or print page
- Whether the artwork will contain generated lettering or receive lettering later
For the documented example, the useful starting brief is a maximum of five pages, a wholesome and emotionally sincere human-and-robot romance, a slightly futuristic setting, and a hopeful but bittersweet resolution.

Step 2: Generate the story in Gemini
Start with a constrained script rather than asking for “a comic” in general. Explicit page and panel requirements make the result easier to check and hand off.
Recommended Free Tools
Create a complete short comic script for a five-page comic.
Premise:
A human and a robot fall in love while deciding whether the robot should sacrifice its memory to save the human.
Audience:
Teen and adult general audience. Wholesome, emotionally sincere, no explicit content.
Requirements:
- Exactly 5 pages.
- 3 to 5 panels per page.
- Every panel must include:
- panel number
- shot type
- setting
- characters present
- visible action
- emotion
- dialogue
- caption, if needed
- sound effect, if needed
- Keep dialogue short enough for comic speech bubbles.
- Maintain the same character appearance and clothing unless a change is explicitly stated.
- Do not introduce new characters after Page 1.
- End with a hopeful but bittersweet resolution.
After the script, provide:
1. A character reference sheet.
2. A location reference sheet.
3. A continuity checklist.
4. A list of facts that must not change during image generation.
The important instruction is not the specific romance premise. It is the separation of visible panel information from general prose. A panel needs an action, composition, setting, and emotion that an artist or image model can use.
Step 3: Build a story bible
Before sending anything to NotebookLM, ask Gemini for a compact canonical reference sheet. It should contain:
- Title and logline
- Audience, genre, and tone
- Character identities: names, ages where relevant, roles, appearance, clothing, body language, and relationships
- Setting: locations, technology, time period, weather, and lighting rules
- Timeline: the order of events and time between scenes
- Conflict and ending
- Forbidden changes: facts that must not be altered
Save this as a document alongside the approved script. The story bible reduces a common failure in AI comic workflows: a character who changes clothing, age, face, or role from one panel to the next.
Step 4: Check the script before importing it
Ask Gemini for a continuity pass, not another creative rewrite. Have it check:
- Whether every page and panel is numbered
- Character names, clothing, appearance, and pronouns
- Time-of-day and location transitions
- What each character knows at each point in the story
- Unresolved plot points or contradictory actions
- Dialogue that is too long for a speech bubble
- Props that appear, disappear, or change position without explanation
Require a validation summary such as:
Page count: 5
Panel count by page: 4, 4, 3, 4, 3
Total panels: 18
Continuity issues: [list or “none found”]
Unresolved ambiguities: [list or “none found”]
If the draft exceeds five pages, do not rely on the model to interpret “maximum” loosely. Ask it to compress or remove panels while preserving the ending.
Step 5: Put the approved sources in NotebookLM
- Open NotebookLM.
- Create a new notebook.
- Paste the approved script as text or add it as a document.
- Add the story bible, character reference sheets, location references, visual style guide, and continuity checklist.
- Confirm that the sources contain the final version rather than an earlier draft.
NotebookLM notebooks are independent collections of sources; it cannot automatically use information from multiple notebooks at once. Put all material needed for this comic in the same notebook. Google’s NotebookLM creation instructions and current interface may differ by account and device.

There is also an important grounding distinction. Google’s documentation says NotebookLM responses are grounded exclusively in notebook sources, while Gemini may also use web search and other tools. The products are increasingly integrated, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. See Google’s explanation of NotebookLM notebooks in Gemini Apps.
Creating notebooks directly inside Gemini Apps requires a personal Google Account according to Google’s current desktop instructions. Work and school accounts may not support that particular Gemini Apps workflow, while NotebookLM itself supports various business and school accounts depending on the Workspace edition.
Step 6: Convert the script into a storyboard
Ask NotebookLM to transform the approved material, not to continue writing the story.
Use only the uploaded story, character sheet, and continuity notes.
Convert the approved script into a production-ready comic storyboard.
Do not:
- add plot points
- add characters
- rewrite the ending
- change the setting
- alter character identities
- introduce props that affect the story
Return exactly five pages. For each page:
- state the page purpose
- list every panel in order
- specify the camera framing
- describe the background
- describe each character’s pose and expression
- reproduce dialogue exactly unless a shorter bubble-safe version is clearly marked
- provide a concise image-generation prompt
- identify continuity details that must match adjacent panels
At the end, provide:
- a character consistency checklist
- a location checklist
- unresolved ambiguities
- panels that need human review
Words such as “source-only,” “do not invent,” and “flag ambiguity instead of resolving it” are valuable safeguards. If NotebookLM cannot determine a location, prop, or action from the sources, it should identify the gap rather than silently adding material.
What a useful storyboard entry contains
A production-ready panel description should answer eight questions:
- What is the camera distance or angle?
- Where is the panel set?
- Which characters are present?
- What are they visibly doing?
- What pose and facial expression communicate the emotion?
- What dialogue, caption, or sound effect appears?
- What must match the previous and next panels?
- What concise prompt can be passed to an image tool?
“The character feels sad” is not enough. “Close-up; shoulders lowered; eyes fixed on the damaged memory core; one hand gripping the coat sleeve; cool blue light from the console” gives an image model and a human editor something actionable.

Generate the artwork without dialogue when possible, then add lettering separately. AI-generated text inside images is often distorted or unreadable, and speech bubbles need to follow the page’s reading order. A clean art layer also makes revisions easier.
Review adjacent panels together. A character may look acceptable in isolation but fail as part of a sequence because the face, clothing, hand position, lighting, or direction of movement changes between panels.

A finished comic needs more than images. In a design or comic-layout application:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Place panels in a clear reading order.
- Keep important faces and actions away from gutters and crop edges.
- Use consistent margins and panel spacing.
- Place speech bubbles near the speaker without covering essential art.
- Use a readable font with enough contrast and size for the destination screen.
- Keep captions visually distinct from dialogue.
- Add sound effects only where they support the action.
- Check safe margins and export resolution for the intended platform.
- Prepare alt text or a text transcript when accessibility matters.
Possible outputs include a lettered web comic, a social-media carousel, a presentation, or a print-oriented page. These formats have different aspect ratios, resolutions, and reading behaviors, so decide the destination before final layout.
Limits, accounts, and current access
Google’s current public documentation lists standard Gemini Notebook limits of up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 500,000 words per source, and 200 MB for local uploads, along with up to 50 chat queries and three audio generations per day. These are documented signals rather than permanent guarantees; limits can vary by account, region, Workspace edition, and Google AI plan. See the current Gemini Notebook FAQ.
Google also documents higher notebook, source, chat, and artifact limits for some higher-tier Workspace or AI plans. The exact entitlement depends on the plan, so do not assume that a limit visible for one account applies to every reader. The Workspace account documentation covers work and school availability.
For Gemini Apps, Google currently documents context windows ranging from 32,000 tokens without a Google AI plan to larger windows on higher plans, including a documented 1-million-token level for Google AI Pro and Ultra. Model access, usage multipliers, and features can change. Check Google’s current plan documentation before choosing a subscription.

Cost and tool choices
A short script may be possible with free access, but “free AI comic” is not a universal promise. Image generation, higher usage limits, premium models, and layout software may introduce separate costs. Choose the paid tool according to the bottleneck:
- Writing bottleneck: consider a higher Gemini plan only if the available model or limits restrict the script work.
- Organization bottleneck: NotebookLM is relevant when you need source-grounded continuity and structured planning.
- Artwork bottleneck: compare image services for character consistency, style control, licensing, privacy, and credit usage.
- Production bottleneck: prioritize a layout or dedicated comic application for lettering, reusable assets, panel borders, and export.
- Privacy bottleneck: investigate local or open-source image workflows, accepting the additional setup and hardware requirements.
Potential alternatives serve different jobs rather than replacing the whole pipeline. Canva is oriented toward page design and social graphics; Adobe Firefly toward image generation and editing; Midjourney toward stylized visual development; Clip Studio Paint toward comic drawing, paneling, and lettering; and Comic Life toward quick comic-page assembly. Their current features, pricing, and licensing terms should be checked directly before commercial use.
Privacy, copyright, and publishing checks
Privacy
Google states that uploaded NotebookLM files and chats are not used directly to train Google’s foundational generative AI models unless the user provides feedback. Google may still process data for safety, fraud, abuse prevention, and technical purposes, while Workspace accounts are subject to additional enterprise terms. Read Google’s current NotebookLM privacy and grounding information before uploading confidential manuscripts, client material, personal data, or unpublished business information.
Rights and likeness
- Do not copy a living artist’s signature style as a substitute for commissioning or licensing their work.
- Do not use copyrighted characters without permission.
- Do not generate recognizable people without appropriate rights or consent.
- Review each platform’s commercial-use and generated-content terms.
- Check local law and the requirements of the publishing platform.
Final quality review
- Does the story still have the intended beginning, conflict, choice, and ending?
- Are character faces, clothing, ages, colors, and props consistent?
- Can a reader follow the panel order without explanation?
- Are speech bubbles readable at the actual publication size?
- Are claims, cultural details, and sensitive subjects reviewed by a human?
- Are copyright, likeness, licensing, and platform rules satisfied?
- Does the final export meet the destination’s dimensions and file requirements?
- Is alt text or a transcript available where appropriate?
What the workflow is good at—and where it stops
Gemini is strongest at quickly exploring premises, rewriting dialogue, and imposing structure on a short story. NotebookLM is most useful when the story has already been approved and you need a source-grounded planning layer that can check pages, panels, characters, and continuity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The handoff is also the main weakness. The story can drift between tools if the source is not locked. NotebookLM may produce a detailed storyboard, but that does not guarantee coherent images. Image models can alter faces, clothing, props, and lettering. Layout still requires human judgment about pacing, reading order, hierarchy, and legibility.
The honest definition of “finished” is therefore specific: a concept is not a script; a script is not a storyboard; a storyboard is not panel art; panel art is not a lettered comic; and a lettered comic is not necessarily print-ready or commercially publishable.
