Printing ink is made by combining a colorant with a vehicle or binder, then tuning the mixture so it flows through a particular press, adheres to a particular surface, and dries or cures in the required way. It is a formulated system—not simply colored liquid. Pigments or dyes provide the color; resins, oils, water, or solvents carry that colorant; and additives adjust properties such as viscosity, adhesion, flexibility, abrasion resistance, drying, and curing.

What printing ink is made of

Most printing-ink formulations are built from four broad component groups. Their exact identities and proportions vary by printing process, substrate, and performance target.

Component Primary job Important qualification
Pigment or dye Supplies color and, in some formulations, optical effects. Pigments are solid particles dispersed through the ink. Dyes are dissolved in a compatible liquid. Both are used in printing inks.
Binder, resin, or vehicle Carries or disperses the colorant and helps the dried film adhere to the substrate. Terminology differs among ink technologies: IARC uses vehicle for the fluid carrier, while manufacturers often call the film-forming material a binder or resin.
Water, solvent, oil, or other diluent Makes the batch workable and controls flow and viscosity; it may leave by evaporation during drying. Some systems are water-based, some solvent-based, and some energy-curable. Not every ink contains an organic solvent.
Additives Fine-tune flow, wetting, adhesion, flexibility, abrasion resistance, drying, curing, foam control, or other behavior. There is no universal additive package; inclusion is formulation-specific.

A manufacturer may make a vehicle from resin dissolved or dispersed in oil or solvent, or may buy a prepared varnish. It may also start with a pre-dispersed pigment concentrate, so a plant does not necessarily manufacture every ingredient from raw chemicals.

How ink is manufactured

The usual operation is batch formulation followed by mixing and dispersion. The equipment and sequence change with the ink chemistry, the condition of the colorant, the press, and the material to be printed.

  1. Choose and prepare the vehicle

Formulators select resins, oils, water, solvents, and other carrier materials for the intended printing method and substrate. The vehicle must provide the needed flow while forming a film that can remain attached to the surface. A ready-made varnish may be used instead of making this phase from separate ingredients.

  2. Premix the colorant

Pigment or dye is added to part of the vehicle and mixed. Wetting is important: the liquid must contact the colorant effectively before the batch can become uniform. The premix is adjusted toward the target color and working consistency.

    • The drawing inks allow overlaying of different colors for attractive color mixes
    • Includes: Canary Yellow, Orange, Carmine, Violet, Blue, Emerald, Nut Brown, Black. Actual contents may vary
  3. Disperse solid pigment particles

Pigment particles do not dissolve, so they must be distributed through the vehicle and separated from agglomerates. Depending on the formulation and starting material, manufacturers may use high-shear dispersers or mills. Historical descriptions include three-roll, ball, sand, and shot mills; those examples do not mean every modern plant uses the same machine. A pre-dispersed concentrate can reduce or eliminate some milling.

  4. Adjust the batch

The formulator checks color, viscosity, flow, and other requirements, then adds water, solvent, resin, or additives as needed. Adjustments may target adhesion, flexibility, abrasion resistance, drying rate, gloss, or press behavior.

  5. Filter and package

Some inks are filtered to remove residual particles or contamination before filling. The finished batch is then packaged for shipment or for use in a specific press and job.

Why there is no single ink recipe

Ink has to function as part of a printing system. The printing process determines how the ink is transferred, the substrate determines what the film must adhere to and how it can dry, and the production schedule determines the required drying or curing behavior. As Siegwerk puts it, “not every ink is suitable for every printing technology or application.”

Printing process

Paste-ink processes such as lithography and letterpress use different rheology from liquid-ink processes such as flexography and gravure. A formulation that transfers correctly in one process may be too thick, too thin, too slow-drying, or otherwise unsuitable in another.

Substrate and adhesion

Paper, board, plastic film, metal, and other surfaces differ in absorbency, surface energy, heat tolerance, and flexibility. The binder and vehicle must form an adequate bond without damaging or distorting the substrate.

Flow and viscosity

Water, solvents, oils, resins, and additives control how the ink wets the printing image, moves through the press, and levels on the surface. Viscosity is therefore a process requirement, not a fixed property shared by all inks.

Film performance

The finished film may need to bend, resist rubbing, remain glossy, survive outdoor exposure, or meet a particular adhesion requirement. Additives and resin selection are used to reach those targets.

System Typical described components Drying or curing route
Water-based Colorant, resin, amine, water as diluent, surfactant, and optional additives. Water and other volatile material leave by evaporation, absorption, or a combination.
Solvent-based A resin system dissolved in a compatible solvent, with that solvent also acting as diluent; surfactants and other additives may be included. Solvent leaves by evaporation, absorption, or a combination.
Energy-curable Resin or oligomer, monomer, colorant, surfactant, additives, and—when UV or LED is used—a photoinitiator. UV or LED light, or an electron beam for EB systems, supplies energy that hardens the formulation. This is curing rather than simple solvent evaporation.

Drying is not always the same as curing

Some inks become usable as water or solvent evaporates, or as the substrate absorbs part of the liquid. Other systems also harden through oxidation. Energy-curable inks form a solid film after exposure to the specified energy; in UV or LED systems, a photoinitiator starts polymerization after intense light exposure. A formulation can therefore be designed around evaporation, absorption, oxidation, energy curing, or a combination of mechanisms.

Pigment dispersion is the critical manufacturing task

Color strength and consistency depend on how well pigment is wetted and dispersed. Poor dispersion can leave agglomerates, create uneven color, increase wear or clogging risk, and impair the printed film. Milling is one way to reduce particle clusters, but it is not automatically required for every batch: prepared varnishes and pre-dispersed concentrates can change the sequence and equipment needs.

How broad is the raw-material universe?

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-hosted historical industry profile refers to at least 1,500 different raw materials available to the printing-ink industry. The document’s publication date is not established in the available metadata, and its production description draws on older industry sources, including a 1989 reference. The figure should therefore be read as historical context showing the breadth of formulation choices—not as a current count, a recipe, or a statistic that applies to every ink plant.

Safety and suitability depend on the application

IARC’s overview of printing inks describes potential worker exposure routes during mixing, dispersion, and equipment cleaning, including inhalation and skin contact. Those pathways do not replace current local workplace rules, safety data sheets, engineering controls, or plant-specific procedures.

Siegwerk says its own raw-material qualification process screens suppliers and materials, collects composition and purity information, and applies particularly stringent criteria to materials used in food-packaging inks. That describes Siegwerk’s process; it is not a universal certification or a guarantee that every ink is suitable for food contact or any other particular use. Suitability must be established for the specific formulation, substrate, regulatory jurisdiction, and application.

What to remember

  • Ink is a coordinated formulation of colorant, vehicle or binder, liquid carrier, and optional performance additives.
  • Manufacturing normally centers on premixing, dispersing, adjusting, and finishing a batch.
  • Pigments are dispersed particles, so dispersion quality is central to color and print performance.
  • Printing process, substrate, flow requirements, and drying or curing route determine the recipe.
  • Evaporation, absorption, oxidation, and energy curing are different ways an ink can become a durable film.
  • A manufacturer’s qualification or safety statement applies to that manufacturer’s process unless a broader standard is specifically established.
