For a 1,000 sq ft 2BHK, Asian Paints’ official quotation calculator gives a planning figure of 12–15 litres of finish paint per coat. Two finish coats therefore require about 24–30 litres. Treat that as an ordering range rather than a guaranteed quantity: the actual amount depends on paintable wall area, ceilings, doors and windows, surface porosity, repairs, colour change, application method and the specific product.
What does the official 2BHK estimate include?
The 12–15-litre figure is an example for a 1,000 sq ft 2BHK, not a universal conversion from flat size to paint. It refers to finish paint for one coat. If the specification calls for two finish coats, the same example becomes 24–30 litres.

The figure also assumes you are discussing the finish coat, not the complete preparation system. Putty, primer, crack repairs, sealers and labour must be planned separately.
“1,000 sq ft” can mean carpet area, built-up area or super built-up area in a property listing. Those measurements are not interchangeable. A quotation based on carpet area will normally differ from one based on measured walls, so confirm which area your contractor or calculator is using.

How do you calculate the quantity for your own flat?
Measure the surfaces that will actually be painted, select the coverage stated for your product, and then apply the coat count. The official calculation is:
Paint required (litres) = paintable area (sq ft) ÷ coverage (sq ft per litre per coat) × number of coats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Measure each room. Record the length and height of every wall. For a rectangular room, wall area is approximately
2 × (length + width) × wall height. - Subtract openings where appropriate. Deduct large doors, windows and other unpainted openings. Small openings may have little effect on a whole-flat estimate, but several large glazed areas can materially reduce the wall area.
- Add ceilings if they are included. A ceiling normally contributes the room’s floor-area footprint. Include it only if the quotation covers ceiling painting.
- Separate surfaces with different finishes. Kitchens, bathrooms, accent walls, metalwork, woodwork and exterior-facing surfaces may need different products or preparation.
- Choose the product’s own coverage. Use the technical data sheet for the exact interior emulsion or finish, rather than a generic number found on a different product.
- Multiply by the required coats. Two finish coats are common in the guidance, but a sound previously painted wall may be specified differently from a new or repaired surface.
- Round up to practical pack sizes. Allow enough material to complete the final coat consistently, while avoiding a large surplus that may remain unused.
Can carpet area be used as a shortcut?
Yes, but only as a preliminary budgeting proxy. Asian Paints’ Paint Budget Calculator estimates wall painting area by multiplying carpet area by 2.5 and treats ceiling area as equal to carpet area. These factors are useful for a quick quotation, not a substitute for room-by-room measurement.
The proxy can overstate or understate the real requirement when a flat has unusually high ceilings, a compact layout, many windows, open-plan rooms, extensive cabinetry or large unpainted sections. Measure the walls when the order must be accurate, especially for an expensive colour or a product sold in limited pack sizes.
If you use the proxy, keep the assumptions visible on the quotation: carpet area used, whether ceilings are included, whether doors and windows were deducted, and the number of finish coats. That makes it easier to reconcile a contractor’s figure with your own calculation.
Which Asian Paints coverage figure should you use?
Coverage is not identical across the range. Asian Paints’ general interior guidance says most interior wall paints cover about 120–150 sq ft per litre per coat and recommends two coats. Individual product sheets can show a different result, particularly when they specify coverage for two coats.

| Reference | Coverage stated | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| General interior guidance | 120–150 sq ft/L/coat | Broad planning range for most interior wall paints; use the selected product sheet when available. |
| Classique Premium Acrylic Interior Emulsion | 85–130 sq ft/L for two coats | Product-specific two-coat range; do not treat it as a per-coat figure. |
| RHS interior wall finish | 13–15 sq m/L for two coats | Product-sheet range expressed in square metres; verify the pack label and surface conditions. |
The figures above come from Asian Paints guidance and product sheets whose publication year is not shown; they were accessed in 2026. The difference between a broad per-coat guideline and a product sheet’s two-coat coverage is why a single “litres per bedroom” rule can be misleading.
Coverage describes a test or expected range, not a promise for every wall. Rough plaster, porous masonry, patched areas, texture and a strong colour change can consume more paint than a smooth, previously sealed wall.
How many coats should a 2BHK receive?
Plan on two finish coats unless the product specification or site assessment says otherwise. Two coats usually provide more even colour and sheen and help hide variations in the underlying surface; reducing the coat count to save paint can leave thin coverage, visible patches or a different appearance at joints and repairs.
Count primer separately. A fresh wall, a chalky surface, a major colour change or extensive putty work may need a primer before the finish coats. Primer is not interchangeable with finish paint, and its coverage must be taken from the primer’s own data sheet.

When repainting, inspect the existing film. Sound, clean paint may need less preparation than new plaster, but glossy, flaking, damp or powdery areas require correction before any finish coat. Painting over a defect does not remove the defect; it can increase consumption and still produce an uneven result.
Is one 20-litre pack enough for a 2BHK?
For the official 1,000 sq ft example with two finish coats, one 20-litre pack is below the 24–30-litre planning range. It may be enough only when the measured requirement is lower than that example, when fewer finish coats are specified, or when some surfaces are excluded.

Asian Paints product sheets list 20-litre packs as well as smaller pack sizes for interior wall finishes. A 20-litre pack plus a smaller pack can therefore be a practical starting combination for the example, but confirm the measured requirement, product variant and coverage before opening the order.
Do not combine leftover colours or different bases merely to reach the required volume. Even products with similar names can differ in sheen, tinting base, washability and application instructions. If a second pack is needed, buy the same product and shade, and mix containers together where the manufacturer’s instructions allow it so the final coat remains uniform.

Finish-paint litres do not tell you how much preparation material is required. Asian Paints’ calculator and guidance treat preparation as a separate part of the job, and the right quantity depends on how much of the wall needs filling or sealing.
- Wall putty: needed where the surface has pores, minor undulations or repaired patches. Estimate the area that will actually be skimmed; a full skim and spot repairs have very different consumption.
- Primer: selected for the substrate and finish system. New plaster, porous walls and large colour changes can require a different preparation approach from a stable previously painted wall.
- Crack and damp repairs: fix the cause and allow the repair to cure before priming. Paint quantity cannot compensate for active dampness or loose plaster.
- Masking and protection: include tape, floor covering and cleaning supplies when comparing a self-painting job with a contractor’s quote.
- Labour: application, sanding, drying time and moving furniture are separate cost items from the paint itself.
Because no universal primer or putty quantity is established by the finish-paint estimate, ask for those materials to be listed separately on the quotation rather than accepting a single unexplained “paint package” quantity.
What can make the actual consumption higher or lower?
Several variables can move the result outside the planning range:
- Substrate porosity: new plaster, gypsum, cement render and unsealed patches absorb more material.
- Surface roughness or texture: a textured wall has more surface area than a smooth wall and can require additional paint.
- Colour change: covering a deep, bright or contrasting colour with a pale shade may need extra primer or finish coats for even hiding.
- Repairs and putty: repaired areas can absorb paint differently from the surrounding wall, producing patchiness if they are not sealed.
- Application method: roller, brush and spray application have different transfer efficiency and waste. Edges, corners and cut-in work also consume material.
- Coat thickness and dilution: follow the product instructions. Adding unapproved water or applying an excessively thin coat can change coverage and performance.
- Unpainted or excluded areas: wardrobes, full-height cabinets, tiles, panelling and large openings reduce paintable wall area.
These factors are why the official calculator describes its number as an estimate and why a site inspection can produce a different quotation for flats with the same advertised area.

What does a worked calculation look like?
Suppose your measurements add up to 1,800 sq ft of paintable wall and ceiling area, and the selected product sheet states 120 sq ft per litre per coat. For two coats:
1,800 ÷ 120 × 2 = 30 litres
If the same measured area were assessed at 150 sq ft per litre per coat, the arithmetic would be:
1,800 ÷ 150 × 2 = 24 litres
This illustrates how the coverage assumption alone changes the order by 6 litres. The example is a calculation method, not a claim that every 2BHK has 1,800 sq ft of paintable surface. Use your measured area and the exact product’s stated coverage.
Keep a written worksheet showing each room, deductions for openings, ceiling inclusion, coverage source and coat count. If the total is close to a pack boundary, have the painter confirm whether the remaining material will be needed for touch-ups or a consistent final coat.
How should you compare products before ordering?
Litres are only one part of the decision. Compare the complete system and the surface result you need.
| Comparison point | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Is the figure per coat or for two coats, and is it measured in sq ft or sq m? |
| Finish | Do you want a matte, soft-sheen or higher-sheen appearance, and will it reveal wall imperfections? |
| Washability | Will the room need frequent cleaning, and does the product’s claim apply to the selected finish? |
| Surface suitability | Is the product intended for interior plaster, masonry, previously painted walls or another substrate? |
| Preparation system | Which primer, putty or sealer does the technical guidance specify? |
| Pack sizes | Can the required quantity be assembled without a large leftover balance? |
| Total project cost | What are the separate amounts for finish paint, preparation materials, labour and protection? |
A cheaper litre price can be offset by lower coverage, an extra coat or more preparation. Compare the expected cost of the complete application system rather than multiplying a retail price by a guessed number of buckets.

What should you check before buying?
- Confirm whether the quoted 1,000 sq ft is carpet, built-up or another area measurement.
- List every room and mark walls, ceilings, doors, windows, tiles, cabinets and other exclusions.
- Decide whether the job includes one or two finish coats and any accent colours.
- Choose the exact Asian Paints product and record its coverage unit and coat basis.
- Inspect for dampness, flaking, chalking, texture and repairs before finalising litres.
- Obtain separate quantities for putty, primer and repair compounds.
- Choose pack sizes that cover the calculated amount with a sensible allowance, not an arbitrary extra bucket.
- Keep the shade name, product variant and batch details so any later touch-up uses compatible material.
Following this checklist gives you a defensible order quantity and makes it easier to identify whether a difference in a contractor’s quote comes from area, coverage, preparation or coat count.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same paint estimate for every 2BHK layout?
No. Two flats with the same carpet area can have different wall lengths, ceiling heights, window areas and built-in furniture. Use the area shortcut only for an early budget, then verify it against measured surfaces before purchasing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should ceilings be included when I ask for a paint quotation?
Ask the painter to show ceilings as a separate line item. This prevents a quote from silently including or excluding them and lets you choose a different ceiling finish if required.
Why does my contractor’s litre estimate differ from the calculator?
The two figures may use different definitions of area, product coverage or coat count. Compare those assumptions first, then check whether one estimate includes primer, putty or touch-up material that the other excludes.
What is the safest way to avoid shade variation during a large job?
Record the exact product, shade and base and purchase enough material for the continuous coat whenever possible. Keep containers sealed and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing and storage; do not assume an unrelated leftover can be blended invisibly.
