For a Diwali repaint, calculate the actual paintable wall and ceiling area, subtract doors and windows, then divide by the chosen product’s stated coverage for the required number of coats. Do not use carpet area as if it were paintable area: it is only a budgeting shortcut.

As a planning example, a 1,000 sq ft carpet-area home with walls and ceilings included works out to about 3,500 sq ft of surface using the 2.5× side-wall shortcut. With two coats of Royale Advanced Luxury Emulsion, whose stated two-coat coverage is 140–160 sq ft per litre, that is approximately 21.9–25 litres before deducting openings. Primer, putty and finish paint must be calculated and purchased separately.

What is the correct formula for calculating paint?

The quantity formula is:

Paint required = Paintable area ÷ coverage per litre per coat × number of coats.

That wording follows the formula published in Asian Paints’ official calculator. The same calculator warns that actual consumption changes with surface porosity, texture, application method and wastage. Coverage printed for a two-coat system already represents the product’s expected consumption for both coats, so do not multiply it by two again.

  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Use the formula separately for primer, putty and finish paint. Each material has its own coverage, surface limits and number of coats.

How do you measure the area to be painted?

A measured room-by-room calculation is more reliable than applying a percentage to the home’s carpet area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Measure every wall. Record each wall’s length and height in feet, then multiply length by height. For a room with four rectangular walls, add the four wall areas.
  2. Add ceilings that are included. A rectangular ceiling is length multiplied by width. Skip rooms or ceilings that are not part of the Diwali refresh.
  3. Measure openings. Record the width and height of every door, window, large arch or other unpainted opening. Multiply each opening’s dimensions and add the results.
  4. Subtract openings. Deduct the total door and window area from the wall total. Small reveals and edges can be left in the estimate if they will be painted; large openings should not be counted as full wall.
  5. Separate surfaces and products. Keep walls, ceilings, trim, doors and metal or woodwork as distinct line items because they may need different primers and finishes.
  6. Apply the product’s coverage. Read the label or technical sheet for the exact surface and coat count. Do not substitute a generic “per litre” figure.
  7. Round up only at the end. After calculating litres, round to the available pack sizes and retain a small, labelled quantity for touch-ups if the budget allows.

Example of deducting openings

Suppose the estimated walls and ceiling total 3,500 sq ft. Two 3 ft × 7 ft doors occupy 42 sq ft. Four 4 ft × 3 ft windows occupy another 48 sq ft. The paintable area is therefore 3,500 − 90 = 3,410 sq ft. Use 3,410 sq ft in the finish-paint calculation, not the original 3,500 sq ft.

Can carpet area provide a quick Diwali estimate?

Yes, but only for early budgeting. Asian Paints’ current budget calculator estimates side-wall area as carpet area multiplied by 2.5 and estimates ceiling area as equal to carpet area. This shortcut is useful before you can measure every room; it does not account for unusual room shapes, double-height spaces, built-in cabinets or large openings.

For a home with 1,000 sq ft of carpet area:

  • Estimated side walls: 1,000 × 2.5 = 2,500 sq ft.
  • Estimated ceiling: 1,000 sq ft.
  • Estimated total before openings: 3,500 sq ft.

Once you have room dimensions, replace the shortcut with measured areas and deduct doors and windows. The difference can be substantial in homes with many balconies, glass doors or open-plan voids.

How much paint is needed for a 1,000 sq ft house?

The answer depends on whether 1,000 sq ft means carpet area or paintable area and on the selected product. The following example treats 1,000 sq ft as carpet area, includes walls and ceilings, assumes two finish coats and uses the shortcut above. It does not yet deduct openings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Calculation Result
Carpet area 1,000 sq ft
Estimated side walls 2,500 sq ft
Estimated ceiling 1,000 sq ft
Total estimated surface 3,500 sq ft
Royale Advanced Luxury Emulsion, two-coat coverage 140–160 sq ft per litre on normal masonry
Finish paint required 3,500 ÷ 160 to 3,500 ÷ 140 = approximately 21.9–25 litres

After the 90 sq ft of openings in the earlier example is deducted, the same range becomes 3,410 ÷ 160 to 3,410 ÷ 140, or approximately 21.3–24.4 litres. Treat this as a planning range, not a guarantee. Rough, porous, textured or poorly prepared walls can consume more, and a strong colour change may require additional hiding coats.

What coverage figures should you use for common products?

Coverage is meaningful only when its coat count, surface and application method are carried with it. These figures are the stated values available for the products and references below.

Material or product Stated coverage Coat and surface qualification Pack information or timing
Royale Advanced Luxury Emulsion 270–310 sq ft/L for one coat; 140–160 sq ft/L for two coats Normal masonry; use the range matching the planned coat system 1 L, 4 L, 10 L and 20 L packs
TruCare Wall Primer Up to 225 sq ft/L One coat on smooth masonry by brushing 1 L, 4 L, 10 L and 20 L packs
Dulux Promise SmartChoice Interior 9 sq m/L Two coats Stated drying interval: 3–4 hours
CAMTECH government reference: water-based wall primer 20–25 sq m/L per coat Reference range; actual coverage varies with method, conditions and roughness Ministry of Railways handbook, 2007
CAMTECH government reference: interior acrylic emulsion 13–15 sq m/L Two coats on smooth, primed masonry; actual coverage varies Ministry of Railways handbook, 2007

Do not compare litre prices without normalising for coverage and coats. A product with a lower price per litre may require more litres if its stated coverage is lower or if it needs an extra coat for hiding.

How much primer do you need?

Primer is a separate calculation, even when the finish paint is sold as a complete system. For the 3,500 sq ft example, one coat of TruCare Wall Primer at up to 225 sq ft/L gives 3,500 ÷ 225 = approximately 15.6 litres on smooth masonry when brushed. You would normally round that result up to available packs, then adjust for the measured opening deductions and the actual condition of the walls.

The government reference range of 20–25 sq m/L per coat illustrates why a single universal primer number is unsafe. Convert your measured area to square metres when using that reference (1 sq m is approximately 10.764 sq ft), and follow the product’s own technical sheet where it differs. New or highly porous masonry, repaired patches and chalky surfaces may absorb more primer than smooth, previously sealed walls.

When might primer require more attention?

  • New plaster or masonry: porous areas can pull primer in unevenly and may need additional preparation or a further coat specified by the manufacturer.
  • Peeling or chalking: scrape unstable paint, remove dust and repair the substrate before calculating finish paint.
  • Stains or colour changes: a suitable stain-blocking or tinted primer can reduce the finish coats needed, but it is a different product decision from ordinary wall primer.
  • Mixed surfaces: repaired cement, old paint and putty patches can each have different absorption, so calculate from the dominant condition and retain reserve material.

How many coats should you plan for?

Two finish coats are a common planning assumption for the cited interior products: Royale Advanced Luxury Emulsion publishes a two-coat coverage range, and Dulux Promise SmartChoice Interior states 9 sq m/L for two coats. The final count depends on the existing colour, the new colour, surface uniformity and the product instructions.

One coat

One coat may be suitable for a compatible colour refresh on a smooth, well-sealed wall when the product label permits it. It is a poor default for a major colour change, patched walls or uneven absorption because thin areas and flashing can remain visible.

Two coats

Two coats provide the normal planning baseline for interior emulsion. Let the first coat dry for the interval on the label, inspect the wall in good light, and apply the second coat only after the surface is ready.

Additional coats

Budget for more paint when covering a deep or saturated colour with a pale one, painting over repairs, using a textured substrate or seeking a particularly uniform finish. Rather than arbitrarily adding a percentage, ask the retailer or applicator whether a tinted primer or a specified extra coat is appropriate for the selected colour.

How should you choose pack sizes and reserve paint?

Calculate the required litres first, then combine available packs with the least practical overage. For example, a calculated requirement near 22 litres could be met with one 20 L pack plus a 4 L pack, leaving a small reserve; the exact combination depends on the product’s available sizes and the area that remains after openings are measured.

  • Keep at least one clearly labelled container for touch-ups, including the product name, colour code, sheen and room where it was used.
  • Mix cans of the same colour together before rolling large continuous walls when the manufacturer permits it, so minor batch variation is not visible between sections.
  • Do not open every container at once. Seal unused paint tightly and follow the label’s storage limits.
  • Buy primer and finish paint as separate line items; a surplus of one cannot substitute for the other.

What should you inspect before buying Diwali paint?

Paint quantity is only part of the schedule. A quick inspection prevents you from ordering finish paint before the surface is ready.

  • Photograph each room and note whether ceilings, trims, doors, feature walls and behind large furniture are included.
  • Check for dampness, active leaks, mould, peeling, chalking, cracks and loose putty. Resolve moisture and unstable substrate problems first.
  • Identify surfaces that need different systems, such as wood doors, metal grilles or previously glossy paint.
  • Confirm the colour, sheen, product edition and coverage statement on the current label or technical sheet.
  • Measure and deduct openings, then calculate primer, putty and finish paint independently.
  • Plan ventilation, drying and curing time so the final coat is applied early enough before guests arrive.

How do drying and recoat times affect a Diwali schedule?

Coverage calculations do not tell you when a room will be usable. Dulux Promise SmartChoice Interior states a 3–4 hour drying interval; other products and weather conditions can differ, so use the interval printed for your exact product. High humidity, poor ventilation, cool temperatures and heavy application can extend drying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule preparation, primer, first coat and final coat as separate stages rather than assuming the entire home can be completed in one day. Keep windows or fans arranged for safe ventilation, avoid creating dust while the film is drying, and allow the paint to cure before replacing furniture or hosting visitors.

What mistakes most often cause a paint shortage?

Using carpet area as the final quantity

Carpet area omits wall height and room geometry. Use the 2.5× shortcut only for an early estimate, then measure actual walls and ceilings.

Ignoring openings

Large windows and doors can reduce the required litres, while small reveals and edges may add work. Measure both rather than applying an unexplained percentage.

Mixing one-coat and two-coat coverage

A one-coat figure cannot be used for a two-coat plan without applying the manufacturer’s formula correctly. Read whether the label’s number already describes the complete two-coat system.

Assuming every wall is smooth masonry

Texture, sanding dust, exposed repairs and porous plaster increase consumption. Surface preparation often saves more paint than trying to reduce the order by a small theoretical margin.

Buying only the exact calculated litres

Pack sizes force rounding, and a small touch-up reserve is valuable after furniture is moved back. Keep the reserve sealed and labelled rather than relying on a future colour match.

How can you organise the final Diwali painting checklist?

  1. Define the rooms and surfaces included in the refresh.
  2. Measure walls, ceilings and openings; record the arithmetic for each room.
  3. Inspect and repair dampness, cracks, peeling and chalking.
  4. Select the finish product, colour and sheen, and copy its coverage and coat instructions.
  5. Calculate primer, putty and finish paint separately.
  6. Convert the litre totals into the product’s available pack sizes and add a modest touch-up reserve.
  7. Buy from the same product system where required and retain every label.
  8. Apply coats at the stated drying and recoat intervals, with adequate ventilation.
  9. Label leftover paint by room and colour code for future repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher-sheen paint change the amount I should buy?

It can change how visible surface defects are, even when the printed coverage is similar. Higher sheen generally demands more uniform preparation, so budget for sanding and patch correction rather than assuming extra litres alone will hide defects.

Can leftover paint be stored for post-Diwali touch-ups?

Yes, if the container is sealed well, protected from freezing or extreme heat, and stored according to the label. Stir a stored can thoroughly and test a small hidden area because colour and consistency can change after storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should ceilings use the same paint calculation as walls?

Calculate ceiling area separately because it has different dimensions, lighting and often a different finish preference. Include it in the same product total only when the product is approved for ceilings and the colour and sheen are intentionally the same.

Why does the same litre quantity cover different homes differently?

Coverage changes with roller or brush technique, spray application, substrate roughness, porosity, repairs, dilution practices and wastage. Two homes with identical carpet areas can therefore need different quantities after their measured surfaces and conditions are considered.
