To estimate Sherwin-Williams wall paint, measure every wall, multiply each wall’s width by its height, add those areas, subtract the measured area of large windows and doors, multiply the result by the number of coats, and divide by the coverage printed on your selected can. Round up to a practical package size.

Sherwin-Williams gives a general interior estimate of about 350–400 square feet per gallon, but the can label is the controlling specification. Texture, porosity, surface condition, application method, primer and separate trim or ceiling work can all change how much paint your project consumes.

How do you calculate the amount of Sherwin-Williams paint for walls?

The reliable method is to calculate net wall area first, then account for coats and the product’s stated spread rate. Use this formula:

Gallons to buy = ceiling[(gross wall area − window and door area) × number of coats ÷ product coverage per gallon]

Keep measurements in square feet. Calculate each wall separately rather than using floor area, because rooms with the same floor size can have different wall perimeters, ceiling heights and openings.

1. Measure the gross wall area

For every wall you plan to paint, measure its width and height. Multiply those dimensions, then add the results. Sherwin-Williams describes the method as multiplying the height by the width of each wall and adding the totals, with measurements rounded to the nearest foot.

For a rectangular room, you can also multiply the room’s perimeter by wall height. Measuring each wall is safer when the room has a bump-out, alcove, sloped section or an unusually large opening.

2. Subtract large windows and doors

Measure the width and height of each large window and door, multiply those dimensions, and subtract the combined area from the gross wall total. Do not rely on standard opening sizes when a tape measure is available; a few inches across several openings can change the quantity you need.

Leave small openings in the calculation if measuring them would add complexity and you are buying a rounded-up quantity, but subtract substantial windows, sliding doors and full-height doors so the estimate reflects the paintable surface.

3. Multiply by the number of coats

Multiply net wall area by one coat, two coats or the number specified for the product and color change. A two-coat project does not use the same amount as a one-coat project even though the wall dimensions are unchanged.

4. Divide by the product’s spread rate

Sherwin-Williams’ calculator guidance says one gallon typically covers 350–400 square feet, and one quart is listed at about 100 square feet. Those are general figures. The selected can’s label takes priority because coverage varies by product, application method and surface condition.

5. Round up

Always round up rather than buying the exact mathematical result. Packaging is sold in practical sizes, and a small reserve helps you complete the final wall and handle future touch-ups without trying to recreate the color.

What is a worked example for a typical room?

Assume the measured walls total 352 square feet, and measured windows and doors account for 50 square feet. The net wall area is 302 square feet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Gross wall area: 352 square feet.
  2. Less openings: 352 − 50 = 302 square feet of paintable wall.
  3. Two coats: 302 × 2 = 604 square feet of coverage required.
  4. At 350 square feet per gallon: 604 ÷ 350 = 1.73 gallons.
  5. At 400 square feet per gallon: 604 ÷ 400 = 1.51 gallons.

The practical purchase is 2 gallons. The dimensions, opening area and two-coat count in this example are assumptions; your result should use your own measurements and the spread rate printed on your chosen can.

How much paint do you need for a 10×12 room?

A 10×12-foot room with 8-foot walls has a 44-foot perimeter. Multiplying 44 by 8 gives 352 square feet of gross wall area, before subtracting openings. If the room has 50 square feet of measured windows and doors and needs two coats, the calculation above produces 604 square feet of required coverage and a practical purchase of 2 gallons.

The floor dimensions alone do not determine the answer. Change the ceiling height, add a closet, use fewer or more openings, or paint only one statement wall, and the wall area changes. Measure the actual surfaces whenever the room differs from this simple rectangle.

Do you need one coat or two coats?

Use the number of coats specified for the product and the color change rather than assuming every wall needs the same application. One coat may be part of a repaint where the existing color is compatible and the surface is uniform; a significant color change, uneven substrate or product instruction may call for two or more coats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Coat plan Calculation effect When to use the figure
One coat Net wall area ÷ product coverage Only when the product and color-change instructions support one coat
Two coats Net wall area × 2 ÷ product coverage When the finish system or color change calls for two coats
Specified number of coats Net wall area × specified coats ÷ product coverage When the label or project specification requires another number

Multiply by the coats before converting square feet to gallons. Dividing first and then trying to double the package count can produce a different result because of rounding.

How do texture and porosity change the estimate?

Rough, textured or porous walls generally consume more paint than smooth, sealed walls because more material is held by the surface. Bare drywall, patched areas and masonry can also have uneven absorption. Sherwin-Williams notes that product requirements vary with surface type or condition and application method.

  • Smooth, previously painted wall: the general 350–400-square-foot-per-gallon range may be a useful starting point, subject to the can label.
  • Textured wall: ridges and recesses increase the surface area and can reduce practical coverage.
  • Porous or bare wall: absorption can make a separate primer coat appropriate and increase total material use.
  • Spray, roller or brush application: the method affects how much product reaches the wall versus being lost during application.

For a rough or absorbent surface, use the lower end of the product’s stated range only if it is consistent with the label, and verify the quantity with a local Sherwin-Williams store representative when the job is close to a package boundary.

Should you calculate primer, trim and ceilings separately?

Yes. Primer, trim and ceilings can use different products, sheens and spread rates, so include them as separate line items instead of blending them into the wall estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Primer

Sherwin-Williams lists approximately 200–300 square feet per gallon for primer. Calculate the primed area, multiply by the number of primer coats, and divide by the primer label’s coverage. A primer gallon is not interchangeable with a finish-paint gallon in the calculation.

Trim and baseboards

Measure baseboards, door and window casings, crown molding and other details separately when they will receive a different product or sheen. The Custom Calculation option is intended for these details.

Ceilings

Ceiling area is usually the room’s length multiplied by its width, but it should remain separate from wall area when the ceiling paint has a different product, color or coverage rate.

Which Sherwin-Williams calculator mode should you use?

Choose the calculator mode that matches the complexity of your project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode Best use Inputs to pay attention to
Quick Calculation A simple room or a statement wall Basic wall dimensions, openings, coats and product coverage
Custom Calculation Projects with texture, trim, baseboards, ceilings or several surface types Separate areas, products, sheens and surface conditions
Deck Calculation Exterior deck work Deck-specific dimensions and product requirements rather than interior wall assumptions

Use Quick Calculation when a few measurements describe the whole job. Switch to Custom Calculation when combining walls with trim, ceilings or other features would hide important differences.

What package sizes and coverage figures are available?

Package size affects how you round the final result. Sherwin-Williams’ calculator guidance lists about 100 square feet per quart and 350–400 square feet per gallon. The HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Infinity Interior Paint & Primer product page lists 1-quart, 1-gallon and 5-gallon sizes with coverage of 300–400 square feet per gallon.

Package or product figure Coverage stated by the manufacturer How to apply it
One quart About 100 square feet Useful for small areas or touch-ups; confirm the selected product label
General interior gallon estimate About 350–400 square feet per gallon Use as a planning range, not a substitute for the can’s spread rate
Primer About 200–300 square feet per gallon Calculate primer separately from finish paint
Infinity Interior Paint & Primer 300–400 square feet per gallon Use the specific label and product instructions for the color and surface
Five-gallon container Coverage depends on the product’s per-gallon rate Convert the required gallons, then choose a package combination that rounds up

Do not apply the Infinity range to another Sherwin-Williams product automatically. Coverage figures are product-specific, and the label on the exact color and finish you buy controls.

How do you check the estimate before buying?

  1. Recheck dimensions: confirm every wall width and height, especially where a closet, soffit or partial wall changes the perimeter.
  2. Recheck openings: measure large windows and doors rather than using standard assumptions.
  3. Confirm coats: read the product instructions and account for the planned color change.
  4. Read the can: record the coverage range for the exact product, sheen and package.
  5. Separate materials: keep primer, trim, ceiling and wall calculations distinct.
  6. Round to packages: choose a combination that leaves enough material for complete coverage and touch-ups.
  7. Ask the store: Sherwin-Williams recommends checking the selected product label and speaking with a local store representative when verifying the amount.

The calculator is an estimate, not a guarantee of identical usage on every wall. Surface condition and application method can move actual consumption outside a simple room-dimension calculation.

What mistakes make people buy too little paint?

  • Using floor area: a 10×12 floor is not 120 square feet of wall; wall area depends on perimeter and height.
  • Forgetting coats: multiplying by two after rounding gallons can leave a shortfall; multiply the square footage first.
  • Using a generic coverage number: the 350–400 range is only a general estimate. The label for the selected product wins.
  • Ignoring texture: textured or porous walls can require more material than smooth, sealed walls.
  • Combining primer and finish paint: each coat has its own spread rate and should be calculated separately.
  • Failing to round up: buying exactly the decimal result leaves no allowance for package sizes, touch-ups or small measurement errors.
  • Painting trim from the wall allowance: trim and molding often use a different product or sheen and need their own area calculation.

If you discover that the first coat absorbs unevenly or coverage is visibly incomplete, stop and reassess the product instructions and surface condition before estimating the next purchase. Applying the same low quantity again can repeat the shortfall.

What should you have ready for the project?

Before calculating, gather a tape measure, calculator, the exact product name and the can’s coverage information. For application, Sherwin-Williams lists basic supplies such as a paint tray and liner; include those separately from the paint quantity. Record your wall dimensions and opening measurements so the estimate can be checked when you buy additional material or need touch-up paint later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sherwin-Williams paint calculator a guarantee of how much I will use?

No. It is an estimate based on the dimensions and assumptions you enter. Surface condition, texture, porosity and application method can change actual consumption, so verify the selected can’s label and ask a local store representative if the quantity is close to a package boundary.

Can I use the coverage printed for one Sherwin-Williams product to estimate another?

You should not assume that. Coverage is product-specific, and the label for the exact paint, sheen and color you selected is the controlling specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might a textured wall need more paint than a smooth wall with the same measurements?

Texture creates ridges and recesses that increase the practical surface area, while porous or bare areas absorb more material. The square-foot calculation stays the same, but the product’s real-world spread can be lower.

Should primer be included in the finish-paint gallon total?

No. Primer has its own spread rate and should be calculated as a separate coat. Sherwin-Williams gives a general primer estimate of about 200–300 square feet per gallon, subject to the primer label.
