How Old Are the Petroglyphs Reported in Cedeño, Venezuela?

Local officials estimate the Quebrada Seca petroglyphs are 4,000–8,000 years old. The method and formal validation are not documented, and the claim that they are the oldest ever is unverified.

Local reports give the petroglyphs found near Quebrada Seca in Cedeño, Venezuela, an estimated age of 4,000–8,000 years. That is an estimate attributed to local officials, not a confirmed date: the coverage does not describe a dating method or publish an archaeological assessment. The available evidence also does not establish that these are the oldest petroglyphs ever carved.

Where were the petroglyphs found?

Reports place the carvings in the high area of the Quebrada Seca community, in San Félix parish, Cedeño municipality, Monagas state, Venezuela. Local coverage says the site is about 3.5 kilometers from San Félix and at an elevation of 647 meters; it does not provide independently verified coordinates. The announcement was attributed to Cedeño mayor Daniel Monteverde and a municipal team that included local tourism officials, the National Land Institute (INTI), and emergency services. What is the reported age—and how certain is it?

The 4,000–8,000-year range is a local officials’ estimate reported in 2026. A University of Carabobo radio station repeated the range, and a later independent report discussed the claim. The coverage cited here does not identify a dated sample, dating technique, or published technical report supporting that range. It should therefore be treated as a provisional attribution, not as a scientifically established age. (Universidad de Carabobo, February 2, 2026; The Art Newspaper, February 24, 2026)

The Art Newspaper’s account raises questions about the scientific rigor of presenting an 8,000-year age without thorough analysis, as well as Indigenous custodianship. The reports reviewed do not establish that the Quebrada Seca carvings received formal certification. The January announcement said officials planned to meet with Venezuela’s Ministry of Culture and Institute of Cultural Heritage to seek it; a plan is not evidence that certification or assessment later occurred.

Does this establish the oldest petroglyphs ever carved?

No. The reports do not provide a comparative assessment of petroglyphs worldwide, and the age itself has not been substantiated in the coverage with a published dating method or archaeological report. Calling the find “the oldest ever” goes beyond what the available evidence establishes. The discovery may be significant locally, but neither its global ranking nor the precise age is verified by these reports.

What do the carvings depict?

Reports describe geometric and symbolic markings. An independent account mentions spirals, concentric circles, and human-like forms. Their meaning, date, and cultural association remain unconfirmed in the sources cited here; the shapes alone do not establish who made them or what they represented. A separate Cedeño petroglyph story

In March 2026, local coverage reported on Piedra de la Luna, a different petroglyph in Cedeño reportedly inspected by Betnaly González, an anthropologist associated with Venezuela’s Institute of Cultural Heritage. That report shows heritage-sector activity in the municipality, but it is not evidence that the Quebrada Seca carvings were dated or formally assessed. (El Oriental de Monagas, March 2, 2026)
