The Star Cluster Quilt Block is a 4-inch finished appliqué block: fuse four red star shapes onto a cream-print background, then secure them with machine satin stitching. It is not a pieced star made from sewn triangles.

Materials and pattern pieces
American Patchwork & Quilting’s pattern calls for a 4-1/2-inch cream-print square, assorted red-print scraps, and fusible web. The appliqué layout uses three copies of the Star Pattern and one reversed copy. The block finishes at 4 inches square. The pattern does not require a particular fabric or fusible-web brand, thread, sewing machine, or specialty ruler.

How to assemble the block
- Choose an appliqué method. The pattern directs you to use the preparation instructions for your selected method in the project download; follow those instructions to cut and prepare the pieces.
- Prepare the background. Cut one 4-1/2-inch square from cream print.
- Prepare the appliqué. Use red-print scraps to make three standard Star Pattern shapes and one reversed shape, following the chosen method’s cutting and preparation directions.
- Position and fuse the shapes. Arrange the prepared stars on the cream square, then fuse them in place with fusible web according to its instructions.
- Stitch the appliqué. Secure the shapes with a machine satin stitch.
Check the finished size
The background is cut oversize at 4-1/2 inches, while the completed block is intended to finish at 4 inches square. The pattern identifies the finished size; it does not specify a separate trimming procedure, so use the project download’s instructions for any remaining preparation or finishing details.
