Perth became the turning point because it was where South African artist Werner Bronkhorst could get a U.S. visa appointment in time for his planned September 2025 New York exhibition. Unable to find an appointment in another Australian city, he flew from Sydney to Perth; PerthNow later reported that he told followers he had secured the visa.

Why Bronkhorst needed to travel to Perth

Bronkhorst, a South African citizen living in Sydney with his family, needed U.S. visa approval to attend a planned New York exhibition in September 2025. According to Zach Margolius’s 28 August 2025 report for PerthNow, he and his team could not find an appointment in another Australian city. Perth was the city where they found one in time.

That appointment availability—not a reported change to visa requirements or a special arrangement—was the practical reason Perth mattered. The report does not identify the visa class or describe application processing, so it does not establish any broader lesson about U.S. visa rules or appointment availability.

What happened on the Perth trip

Bronkhorst flew from Sydney to Perth for the appointment ahead of the planned New York showcase. He described the flight as five hours and said he expected to return to Sydney that night: “So I took a five hour flight. We’re here today, and tonight, we travel back to Sydney.”

Before the outcome was known, he told PerthNow: “Hopefully I get my approval, because otherwise I won’t be able to actually do my exhibition in New York. But let’s see how it goes.” The stakes were direct: without approval, he said, he would not be able to attend the exhibition.

How the visa appointment changed the outlook

PerthNow later reported that Bronkhorst confirmed to his followers that he had secured the visa. That is the reported outcome that supports the headline’s concise framing that Perth helped save the exhibition from cancellation: the available appointment led to the approval he needed to attend.

The report does not name the New York venue, give the exact exhibition dates, or confirm that the exhibition ultimately took place. It therefore establishes the visa and the risk of cancellation as Bronkhorst described them, not the event’s later outcome.

What Bronkhorst said about Perth

While in the city, Bronkhorst praised its art, statues, murals, clean streets, activity and weather, challenging east coast stereotypes he said he had heard. As quoted by PerthNow, he said: “There’s heaps of art, heaps of statues, heaps of murals. The streets are clean. There’s actually a lot of people, compared to what I’ve heard. Apparently, it’s a ghost town — it’s actually not.” These are his impressions of a short visit, not an objective assessment of Perth.

Who Bronkhorst is—and what the report establishes

PerthNow described Bronkhorst as a social media artist who specializes in acrylic gel painting on canvas. At publication, the outlet said he was 24 and had 1.6 million Instagram followers; those are figures from the August 2025 article, not current counts or age details.

The report also said he had recently revealed that his painting Fish In Water achieved a $372,600 auction result. It does not name the auction house or provide the auction date, so the figure is attributable to PerthNow’s account rather than independently detailed auction records. The outlet noted that Bronkhorst had works on display in Korea, but that background does not clarify the New York exhibition’s venue or eventual status.

  • Established by the report: Bronkhorst needed U.S. visa approval for a planned September 2025 New York exhibition, travelled from Sydney to Perth for an appointment he could not find in another Australian city, and was later reported to have said he secured the visa.
  • Not established by the report: the visa class, exact New York exhibition dates or venue, appointment records, or whether the exhibition actually took place.
