Hand-sewing needles begin as straight steel wire, but turning that wire into a sharp, smooth, durable tool takes a series of forming, heat-treatment and finishing steps. Tulip Company Limited describes a process in which one cut section of wire becomes two needles. Machine needles and pins are made differently, so there is no single process that applies to every product.
How hand-sewing needles are made
Tulip Company Limited documents its Hiroshima hand-stitching needle process as a sequence of more than 30 manufacturing steps. Its infographic groups the work into nine stages; those headings are a simplified overview, not a complete list of every operation.

- Straighten and cut the wire. Steel wire is straightened and cut to a length that will produce two needles.
- Grind the points. Repeated grinding gradually forms a point at each end of the wire section.
- Shape the head and form the eye. The eye is stamped into the wire and opened as the section is divided into two needles.
- Round the head. The sides of the eye, which Tulip calls “ears,” are ground so the head is smooth and free of bulges.
- Harden and temper. Tulip describes this as a critical stage for giving the needles hardness and elasticity.
- Polish and clean. The needles are tumbled with polishing agent and oil to finish their surfaces.
- Sharpen the points. Further repeated grinding sharpens the needle tips.
- Apply a finish. Tulip says its needles are nickel-plated; depending on the specification, the head may instead receive gold plating.
- Inspect the eyes. Tulip says it inspects the eye of every needle.
The sequence shows why a hand-sewing needle is more than wire with a hole: the shaft, point, eye and head all need shaping and finishing, and heat treatment is part of the process. Tulip also says that more than 90% of Japan’s sewing needles and pins are produced in Hiroshima; that figure is the company’s published claim, not an independently verified industry statistic.
Machine needles and pins use different processes
Sewing-machine needles
A sewing-machine needle is a distinct product, with features such as a machine-specific shank and groove. A historical U.S. Census Bureau account of manufacture around the 1900 census lists stages including blank formation and reduction, pointing, groove formation, eye punching, hardening and tempering, burr dressing, brushing and eye polishing, inspection, straightening, finish pointing and completion. That account is useful historical evidence, not a current or universal factory specification.

Safety pins
A safety pin needs a body and a head or shielding feature, so its construction differs from a sewing needle. Suvik Overseas describes its own process as using high-carbon steel or brass wire, grinding the tips, stamping the shielding head from sheet metal, tumbling to remove burrs, and electroplating with nickel or brass. This is that maker’s account, not a universal production recipe.
Straight pins
Straight pins are another category, used to hold fabric temporarily rather than stitch it. The available sources do not establish a comparable authoritative, current production sequence for ordinary straight pins, so their exact manufacturing steps should not be inferred from the hand-needle or safety-pin processes.

What the documented process does—and does not—show
Tulip’s account is specific to its Hiroshima hand-stitching needles. It provides a clear look at one maker’s process, but it does not establish that all factories or needle types use the same sequence. Likewise, Tulip’s “over 30 steps” figure describes its own needles rather than an industry-wide standard.
