To make a crisp sewn corner, stitch to the corner and pivot, trim the seam allowance close to—but not through—the stitches, then turn the work right side out, gently push out the point, and press the edges flat. Trimming away a small wedge reduces bulk so the corner can lie flatter.
How to clip and turn a corner
- Stitch to the corner and pivot. Sew the seam to the corner, then pivot the fabric to sew the next side.
- Trim the seam allowance. Cut diagonally across the corner, close to the stitching, without cutting the stitches. Use fabric scissors and take care not to snip the seam.
- Turn the work right side out.
- Ease out the point. From inside the turned work, gently push the corner outward with a chopstick or the eraser end of a pencil. Use light pressure; forcing the point can puncture the fabric.
- Press the edges flat.
Why trim the seam allowance?
The fabric layers bunch at a sewn corner. Removing a small wedge from the seam allowance reduces that bulk, helping the turned point look sharper and lie flatter. Keep the cut close to the stitching, but leave the stitches intact so the seam remains secure.

How to avoid a damaged corner
- Do not cut into the stitching when trimming.
- Turn the work right side out before pushing out the point.
- Use a blunt, narrow tool such as a chopstick or pencil eraser, and push gently rather than forcing the corner.
