Spatial began as a collaboration platform for immersive workrooms, then artists and collectors started using its spaces as galleries. The company added web access and gallery-focused tools as that use grew; contemporary coverage called the change a pivot, while Spatial described it as an evolution shaped by users. That gallery chapter is now historical: Spatial says it ended Free and Pro Creator tiers and 3D World hosting on July 27, 2026.
From virtual workrooms to art galleries
Spatial initially focused on productivity and collaboration, turning shared rooms into 3D workspaces where colleagues could meet and interact with content. Its early proposition was closer to a virtual meeting room than an art gallery.
As artists and collectors began using those spaces to display and discuss art, including NFTs, Spatial responded with tools suited to galleries. In a 2021 company account, Spatial described mobile access, an interactive web app beta that let artists share a gallery by link, MetaMask integration, pedestals, frames, a default Gallery environment, and caption panels. These features made it easier to present work in a shared 3D space.

WIRED’s November 2021 reporting described a related access shift: people wanted to join meetings through a web link rather than attend every meeting in VR, and artists repurposed corporate-style 3D spaces as galleries. Spatial’s leaders called the change an evolution, while WIRED characterized it as a pivot. Both descriptions help explain the story: user behavior prompted a wider set of uses, and the company built for them.
How the two phases differed
| Aspect | Workroom phase | Gallery and event phase |
|---|---|---|
| Primary users | Teams meeting and collaborating | Artists, collectors, and event audiences |
| Main purpose | Shared workrooms and 3D collaboration | Curated exhibitions, NFT displays, and social or branded experiences |
| Access emphasis | Immersive collaboration, including VR | Link-based web access alongside mobile and VR options |
| Current status | Historical product phase | Creator 3D World hosting ended in 2026 |
WIRED reported two historical company figures: 75 percent of people using Spatial’s virtual-reality meeting rooms were not using a VR headset, and 90 percent of Spatial users were NFT artists. These are figures attributed to Spatial and reported by WIRED in 2021, not audited or current statistics.
NFTs as gallery content and event access
In the gallery phase, Spatial spaces could present NFT art as part of a virtual exhibition or event. WIRED reported that the Utah Jazz sold 30 NFT collectibles in September 2021 that provided access to a virtual locker-room meet-and-greet built using Spatial. The example shows how a digital collectible could be associated with an experience; it does not establish a current partnership or service.

Spatial’s business-development head, Jacob Loewenstein, told WIRED, “We’re not a hammer looking for a nail in terms of NFTs.” The remark reflects the company’s stated view that creator use cases mattered beyond the NFT label.

The historical gallery story should not be read as proof that Spatial became a conventional NFT marketplace. The dossier describes gallery presentation, wallet integration, and experiences, but does not establish that Spatial itself handled NFT trading or that its Creator gallery platform remains available today.
What Spatial is doing now
Spatial’s current About page describes experiences for creators, educators, and enterprises across web, mobile, and VR, including no-code or Unity creation, classrooms, branded experiences, and commerce. However, its 2026 announcement says Free and Pro tiers and 3D World hosting ended on July 27, 2026. The company says enterprise customers will continue to be supported under existing terms and that it will focus on original intellectual property through Wooster Games.

That means the historical NFT-gallery chapter should not be presented as an available Creator hosting option today. Readers evaluating access to a Spatial world or service should consult Spatial’s current announcements and terms rather than rely on older feature descriptions.
