The “Studio Ghibli” AI-image craze was a real March 2025 event—but the evidence does not show that Ghibli prompts alone caused OpenAI’s delay. OpenAI launched native image generation in GPT-4o on March 25, 2025. Demand surged almost immediately, free access was temporarily delayed, and the feature became available to all users by March 31.
OpenAI cited high demand and capacity pressure. The viral Ghibli-style transformations were the most visible part of that surge, but no public data established them as a separate, measurable root cause. This is historical context, not a current 2026 outage or free-tier delay.

What OpenAI launched on March 25, 2025
OpenAI introduced 4o Image Generation, an image capability integrated into the GPT-4o experience. It was not simply the earlier DALL·E workflow placed behind a new button.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The practical difference was conversational: users could upload an image, describe a transformation, ask follow-up questions, and refine the result in the same interaction. OpenAI highlighted improved prompt adherence, more accurate text rendering, better handling of multiple objects and relationships, and the ability to use uploaded images as references or inputs.

That combination made image creation approachable to people who had never used a dedicated image-generation interface. A user could begin with a photograph and a short instruction rather than learn a separate prompting system.
Why the Ghibli trend spread so quickly
Within roughly a day, social feeds filled with portraits, wedding photographs, memes, public figures, and familiar fictional scenes rendered in a look resembling Studio Ghibli films. Reported examples included images involving Elon Musk, Donald Trump, The Lord of the Rings, and personal photographs.
The trend had several advantages built into it:
- Instant recognition: the soft colors, expressive faces, painterly backgrounds, and storybook atmosphere were immediately identifiable.
- Low friction: people could upload an existing image and request a transformation in ordinary language.
- Personal relevance: turning a family photograph or selfie into an animated-looking scene gave users a reason to share the result.
- Social proof: high-profile participation, including Sam Altman using a Ghibli-inspired profile image, helped the trend spread beyond specialist AI communities.
- Improved image behavior: contemporary testing by TechCrunch found OpenAI’s tool produced the most accurate Ghibli-style replica among the generators it compared at the time. That was a dated comparison, not a permanent ranking.
The cultural appeal mattered operationally. A feature that might otherwise have been discovered gradually became a mass experiment almost overnight.
Did Ghibli images overwhelm OpenAI?
The careful answer is: the trend appears to have contributed to a broader demand surge, but it was not publicly proven to be the sole cause of the delay.
OpenAI delayed the planned free-tier rollout on March 26 and cited high demand. Reporting during the following days described slowdowns, glitches, restricted access, and capacity challenges. The image feature was computationally more demanding than an ordinary text response because each request required image-generation inference and rendering capacity.

That supports a capacity-management explanation:
- A new image feature launched.
- A highly shareable visual trend emerged almost immediately.
- Large numbers of users began generating and editing images.
- OpenAI restricted or staged free access while managing demand and scaling capacity.
What the available reporting does not establish is the percentage of requests that were Ghibli-related, a discrete “Ghibli overload” incident, or a specific GPU-utilization figure. Sam Altman’s descriptions of GPUs “melting” were colorful shorthand for exceptional demand, not a literal report of hardware failure.
It is also unsupported to claim that the delay was deliberately engineered as a subscription tactic. Staged access can protect reliability and prioritize scarce capacity, while a popular free feature can simultaneously serve as a user-acquisition and paid-upgrade funnel. The public evidence does not reveal OpenAI’s complete internal cost or product strategy.

The timeline in four dates
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| March 25, 2025 | OpenAI announced and launched 4o Image Generation, describing image creation and editing inside GPT-4o. |
| March 26, 2025 | Ghibli-style transformations went viral. OpenAI delayed free-tier access amid high demand. |
| March 27–30, 2025 | Users encountered capacity pressure, delays, glitches, and restricted access as demand was managed. |
| March 31, 2025 | Reporting said image generation became available to all users, including free users. |
| April 1, 2025 | Reuters, citing Similarweb and Sensor Tower, reported a major broader ChatGPT usage surge after the update. |
What free users ultimately received
“Available to all users” did not mean unlimited image generation. Contemporary coverage said the exact free allowance was initially unclear, while Altman had referred to roughly three images per day.
That figure belongs to the March 2025 launch period and should not be treated as current policy. Limits can change by plan, traffic, model, geography, and product version. Anyone checking access today should consult the current ChatGPT pricing page and in-product limits rather than rely on a historical quota.
The episode illustrates why a free rollout may be staged even when a feature is technically ready. Image generation consumes scarce inference capacity, and unrestricted demand can make a service slow or unreliable for everyone. Quotas, gradual expansion, and paid-plan prioritization are ordinary ways to balance availability with infrastructure constraints.

The copyright and artist-rights controversy
The viral images raised a legal and ethical question that is more complicated than “AI style copying is legal” or “AI style copying is illegal.” Several issues must be separated.

Copyright generally protects particular expressive works rather than an abstract artistic style by itself. But an output can still raise concerns if it reproduces protected characters, scenes, compositions, distinctive expression, or other recognizable elements.
Separate questions concern the data used to train an image model, whether that use is lawful, and how different jurisdictions treat training and output. Those questions remained unsettled in March 2025.
OpenAI’s policy distinction
OpenAI told TechCrunch that ChatGPT would refuse requests to replicate the style of individual living artists while permitting broader studio-style requests. That product-policy distinction became controversial because Studio Ghibli’s visual identity is closely associated with living artists, including co-founder Hayao Miyazaki.
A platform’s policy position is not a definitive legal ruling. A user should not infer from a successful generation that the result is free of copyright, trademark, publicity-rights, or contractual concerns.

Miyazaki’s comments were from 2016
During the 2025 trend, widely circulated negative comments by Miyazaki about AI-generated imagery resurfaced. As Reuters reported, those comments came from 2016. They should not be presented as a documented direct response to the GPT-4o trend.
Nor is there evidence in the supplied reporting that Studio Ghibli approved or endorsed the trend, or that OpenAI’s training corpus definitely included Studio Ghibli film frames.
What the usage numbers showed—and what they did not
Reuters reported that ChatGPT’s weekly active users exceeded 150 million for the first time that year, citing Similarweb. The same report cited Sensor Tower estimates showing week-over-week increases in downloads, weekly active users, and in-app purchase revenue.
These figures demonstrate the commercial potential of a viral creative feature: it can attract new users, increase engagement, create infrastructure costs, and encourage upgrades. They do not isolate Ghibli prompts from every other image-generation request, and they are third-party market estimates rather than OpenAI’s audited figures.
What users should know before generating images
Expect limits even when access is free
Free access may be rate-limited, especially during demand spikes. Paid access can provide higher limits or priority, but it does not guarantee unlimited generations, uninterrupted service, or exemption from safety policies.
Best Value
Use uploaded images carefully
Do not upload someone else’s photograph without considering consent and your rights to use it. Personal photographs can also contain sensitive information, faces, addresses, documents, or other details you did not intend to share.
Check the result rather than trusting it
Image models may alter faces, hands, objects, identities, and backgrounds. Text inside images can look plausible while being wrong, particularly in posters, labels, menus, and dense layouts. Review every important detail before publishing.
Understand common failure messages
- “I can’t create that image”: the request may trigger safety rules, identity restrictions, copyrighted-character handling, or style-related policy.
- Slow or failed generation: possible causes include capacity pressure, a rate limit, a transient outage, or an account-specific restriction.
- Inconsistent style transfer: the model may preserve the broad composition while changing faces, lettering, objects, or background details.
- Commercial uncertainty: platform permission is not the same as clearance for third-party photographs, logos, characters, trademarks, publicity rights, or recognizable creative expression.
What this episode says about AI-image products
The incident was a product lesson as much as a meme moment. A compelling visual feature can become a global distribution event before an operator has enough capacity for unrestricted access. The most visible use case may be only one part of the load, while the feature’s real value lies in a broader workflow: generating concepts, editing photographs, building storyboards, iterating on designs, and producing social assets.

For users choosing a tool, the relevant question is not simply which system can imitate a particular look. Consider conversational editing, reference-image handling, text accuracy, privacy controls, commercial terms, quotas, and the platform’s approach to named artists, studios, characters, and public figures.
Possible alternatives
- ChatGPT paid plans: the most direct choice for the conversational workflow discussed here. Limits and features vary and can change.
- Midjourney: suited to stylized visual exploration, but potentially less convenient for users who want document-like conversational editing.
- Adobe Firefly: a natural fit for designers already working in Adobe’s creative tools.
- Google Gemini: worth considering for users already invested in Google’s ecosystem; availability varies by account and region.
- Canva: useful for quickly placing generated assets into presentations, social posts, and templates.
- OpenAI’s API: appropriate for developers who need automation or application integration, not as a simple consumer replacement.
Before subscribing, verify the current price, image quota, commercial-use terms, watermark or metadata behavior, upload controls, regional availability, and whether API access is billed separately. Product policies and entitlements change more quickly than the historical events described in this article.
Current-status note
The free-tier delay described here ended in March 2025: image generation was reported available to all users by March 31. As of the article’s 2026 context, the event should be understood as a case study in viral demand, AI-image capacity, and unresolved creative-rights questions—not as evidence of an ongoing Ghibli-related outage.
