A CNC sand art machine can draw without a pen touching the surface: a two-axis mechanism moves a magnet beneath the table, and the magnet pulls a metal ball bearing through sand above it. The bearing leaves grooves that trace a programmed pattern. How does the machine draw with magnets?
The machine has two moving parts coupled across the drawing surface. Under the table, a CNC mechanism moves a strong magnet along two axes. Above the table, a metal ball bearing follows the magnet through a thin layer of sand. As the bearing travels, it pushes sand aside and leaves grooves that make the design visible.

What is in the reported DIY build?
Simon Sörensen, associated with the RCLifeOn YouTube channel, built the machine as a project inspired by the commercial Sisyphus Kinetic Art Table. Hackster News describes a circular table made from particle board, with a wall assembled from flat laser-cut wood pieces.
- Motion system: A two-axis CNC mechanism assembled from common 3D-printer parts, including aluminum extrusion used as linear rails. Some parts were salvaged from a Creality CR-10S.
- Control and power: The build included a power supply and a generic RAMPS controller board.
- Magnetic coupling: A strong magnet was mounted in place of the CNC toolhead, with a metal ball bearing on the drawing surface.
- Drawing surface: The maker chose a mirror covered with the finest-grit sand he could find after experimenting with the surface and sand to produce clear lines with less noise.

How does it erase or change a drawing?
The article reports that an earlier pattern can be cleared by drawing a spiral over it. The spiral moves the bearing through the existing grooves and redistributes the sand, leaving a surface ready for another pattern. This is a reset pattern, not a separate erasing tool.
What should a DIY builder take from the design?
The key idea is the magnetic connection between the moving mechanism below and the drawing ball above. A steel ball bearing is one concrete component to look for when investigating a similar mechanism, but the report does not establish a particular size or product. If adapting the concept, the important questions are how the magnet couples to the bearing through the chosen surface, whether the two-axis mechanism moves smoothly, and whether the sand produces legible grooves.
