For a simple outline around an entire photo, use the built-in Photos app: open the image, tap Edit → Markup → + → Add Shape → Square. Make the square’s fill transparent, then adjust its border color, thickness, size, and position.
This creates an outline over the original photo. If you want white space or a colored margin outside the image, use a canvas-based app such as Canva or Adobe Express instead.
Add a simple outline in Photos
- Open Photos and select the picture.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the Markup button. Depending on your iOS version or entry point, it may appear as a pen-tip icon.
- Tap +, then choose Add Shape or Shape.
- Select the square. A rectangle may also be available in some interfaces.
- Tap the shape to show its formatting controls.
- Set the fill to transparent, or reduce the fill opacity to zero. Keep the border visible.
- Choose a border color and adjust the border width.
- Drag the corner and edge handles until the outline follows the photo’s four edges.
- Tap outside the shape, then tap Done and Done again to save.
Apple documents Markup controls for border color, border width, fill color, and opacity, although the exact icons and labels can vary by iOS release, device, language, and entry point. See the Apple iPhone User Guide and Apple’s current Photos editing instructions.

Make the inside of the border transparent
The square may initially appear as a solid block and cover the photo. That does not mean the border tool is missing. Select the square and change its fill color to transparent, or use the opacity control to remove the fill while retaining the outline.
- Border color: changes the visible line.
- Border width: changes how thick the line is.
- Fill color: controls the area inside the shape.
- Opacity: may affect the fill, the border, or the whole shape depending on the current controls.
If the image becomes white, gray, or another solid color, undo the shape and inspect the fill and opacity controls before continuing.
Align the border with the photo edges
Markup positioning is manual, so a perfectly even margin can take a little adjustment. Pinch outward to zoom in, use the shape’s handles rather than dragging its center, and align the outline slightly inside the image edges. Zoom back out to check all four sides.

Dragging the middle of the square moves the entire shape. Dragging a handle changes its size. A canvas-based design app is better when you need mathematically consistent margins.
Put a border around part of a photo
To highlight an object or area, add a square or rectangle in Markup and resize it over the relevant part of the image. For a round callout, choose a circle if it is available. Use the same transparent-fill setting so the picture remains visible inside the shape.
This is a geometric callout, not an automatic subject outline. Markup cannot detect and trace the irregular edge of a person, animal, or object. For a sticker-style outline around a person, use an editor with subject selection, cutout, or layers.

Add white space or a colored margin outside the photo
Photos and Markup draw the shape on top of the existing image; they do not expand the image’s canvas. Therefore, Markup cannot create a true Instagram-style white margin outside the original picture.

Use Canva or Adobe Express when you need an outer border:
- Create a design or canvas larger than the photo.
- Set the canvas background to white or another color.
- Place the photo on the canvas and scale it down until the background shows around all sides.
- Export the finished design.
Canva provides a photo-border workflow. Adobe Express describes a similar colored-canvas frame method. These apps are also more suitable for decorative frames, rounded corners, patterned edges, collages, text, and social-media layouts.

Which method should you use?

For a single basic outline, installing an app is unnecessary. Canva is more useful for templates and social graphics; Adobe Express is useful for canvas-based frames and branded layouts; Photoshop Express is aimed more at people who also want conventional photo corrections and filters.
Fix common border problems
The square covers the entire photo
The fill is opaque. Select the shape and set its fill to transparent or reduce its opacity. If the control is unclear, undo the shape and add it again so you can inspect the color and fill options.
The border is uneven
Zoom in and adjust the corner handles individually. Keep the outline just inside the photo edges if you want a clean interior line. For exact, repeatable spacing, use a larger canvas in a design app.

The line is too faint or disappears after sharing
Choose a higher-contrast color and a slightly thicker width. Social platforms may compress images, and a very thin line can disappear against a similar-colored background. Check the saved image before posting.
The border is on the inside, not outside
That is the expected result of Markup: it overlays a shape on the original photo. To place space outside the image, create a larger canvas in Canva or Adobe Express and scale the photo down.
The menus look different
Look for Edit, Markup, +, and Add Shape. Apple can change labels and icon placement between iOS releases and entry points such as Photos, Notes, Messages, or Mail.
Protect the original photo
For an important image, duplicate it before experimenting. Markup edits can usually be reversed through the photo’s edit-reversion controls, but the exact Photos interface may vary. During editing, the undo button removes the latest Markup action.
The built-in method overlays an annotation on the existing photo rather than enlarging its canvas. A third-party editor creates a new export and may change dimensions, file format, compression, or metadata depending on its settings, so do not assume every workflow preserves the original file exactly.
