For a simple eyeliner look, start with a thin line just above the upper lashes, work in short strokes, and build it gradually until it feels right to you. “Perfect” is personal: choose a thickness and finish that suit your comfort and the product format you prefer. Keep makeup outside the lash line to avoid blocking the eyelid’s oil glands.

What you need before you begin
- Eyeliner made specifically for use around the eyes.
- A clean mirror and good lighting so you can see the lash line without leaning into a moving vehicle or applying makeup while in motion.
- If you choose cake eyeliner, a fine, wet eyeliner brush; liquid eyeliner may come with a disposable brush, as described in the CBSE Beauty Therapist training material.
Common formats include pencil, liquid, and cake eyeliner. Pick the format you are comfortable handling and the kind of line you want to try; the available guidance does not establish that one format is universally easiest or lasts longest.

How to apply eyeliner step by step

Prepare your hands and tools
Wash your hands and make sure any tool you will use near your eye is clean. Sit or stand still while applying makeup. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s eye cosmetic safety guidance warns that sudden movement or a vehicle stop can cause an applicator to injure the eye.

Position the line above the lashes
Look into a mirror and place the liner on the skin just above the upper lashes. Keep it outside the lash line rather than drawing on the inner rim. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) advises applying makeup outside the lash line, away from the eye, to avoid blocking eyelid oil glands.

Make a light first pass
Use short, controlled strokes to create a thin line close to the upper lashes. This is a practical way to approach a beginner look, not a medically prescribed or universally best stroke technique.

Connect and refine gradually
Join any small gaps with light strokes, then add a little more product where you want extra definition. Pause to check the line as you go; stop when its thickness and finish look balanced to you.

Try a wing only if you want one
A small outward flick or a thicker line is an optional variation, not a requirement for a finished look. There is no single ideal shape established here, so adjust the line to your preference rather than following a supposed rule for your eye shape.
Choose a format that suits your approach

Eye makeup safety to keep in mind
- Use cosmetics intended for the eye area. FDA cautions against using products such as lip liner as eyeliner.
- Do not share eye cosmetics, and keep hands and applicators clean.
- Avoid eye makeup if you have an eye infection or inflamed skin around the eye. If an infection occurs, discard the eye makeup you were using.
- Stop using a product if it irritates your eye. If irritation continues, consult a doctor.
- Never apply or remove eye makeup in a moving vehicle.

Remove eyeliner gently before bed
Remove eye makeup before sleeping, using a gentle approach around the lashes and eyelids rather than tugging at the delicate skin. The AAO advises removing eye makeup before bed, and the American Academy of Dermatology likewise recommends removing makeup before bed and applying it gently to avoid skin irritation.
