An art study is a focused exercise for investigating one visual problem—not a finished painting that has to look ready for display. Choose a single goal, work from broad shapes toward detail, compare your result with its reference, and record one lesson to use in your next piece. You can begin with a pencil and paper; choose other materials only when they serve the question you want to explore.
What makes an art study useful?
A study is defined by its purpose, not by how polished it looks. You might test a composition, examine how light describes a form, practice a gesture, or see how a limited palette behaves. It can be loose, unfinished, repeated, or corrected. A finished artwork, by contrast, is generally developed to resolve an idea for presentation.

The most useful starting point is one question you can actually check. For example: “Can I keep the three largest light and dark shapes readable?” or “How does the artist lead the eye through this composition?” A single goal helps you choose a suitable subject and judge the result without getting distracted by every detail.
How to do an art study, step by step
- Set one learning goal. Name the visual problem: proportion, gesture, value, color, composition, perspective, edges, or brushwork. Make it specific enough to guide what you look for.
- Choose a manageable subject. Use an everyday object, simple still life, figure pose, landscape, or detail from an artwork. Pick a subject that makes your question visible: a clearly lit form for value, for example, or a scene with colors you want to compare for color mixing. Begin with less visual complexity and increase it as you gain control.
- Observe before making marks. Look for the largest shapes, relative widths and angles, overlaps, and negative spaces. If they matter to your goal, also note perspective, edges, texture, color relationships, and the lightest and darkest areas. With an artwork, ask how composition, focal emphasis, and value groups organize the image.
- Make small exploratory sketches. Try a few thumbnails or quick gesture drawings to test placement and large masses. For a still life, preliminary thumbnails help you examine forms, proportions, and relationships before developing a drawing.
- Build from broad structure to detail. Establish placement, major shapes, and proportions first. Then develop the values or colors your goal requires, refining only the details that help answer your question. For a master study, one practical sequence is a thumbnail, a grayscale value map, a small color study, and a more complete recreation only if it serves the goal. This is an option, not a required formula.
- Compare directly with the reference. Keep the subject or reference visible. Check the relevant relationships—such as proportions, angles, value groups, color, or composition—and identify the largest meaningful difference before correcting small details.
- Write down what you learned. Note what you noticed, what worked, what did not, and one next step. Later, revisit the study and try a useful discovery in another study or your own artwork.
Choose a study type that matches your goal
| Study type | What to investigate | Possible subject or approach |
|---|---|---|
| Observational | Form, proportion, light, edges, or space | Draw an object, plant, hand, piece of furniture, animal, or street scene from life or a reference. |
| Gesture | The action and rhythm of a pose, rather than rendered detail | Make quick drawings of a figure or other moving subject; timed sketches are one option. |
| Composition | Crop, focal point, balance, directional movement, and value grouping | Use small sketches to test different placements or crops. |
| Value | The relationships among large lights, darks, and middle values | Work without full color; for an artwork, map its large value groups before trying to match color. |
| Color or material | Color mixing, warm and cool relationships, brush marks, or a medium’s behavior | Compare a limited set of colors or paint a simple scene in different temperature relationships. |
| Master study | How an artwork uses composition, value, color, edges, or brushwork | Analyze or copy part of an artwork to understand a visual decision, then apply what you learn in your own work. |
For a master study, faithful imitation is not the only measure of success. Decide what you want to understand, then evaluate whether the exercise helped you see or apply that decision.

How to compare a study with its reference
Compare the feature tied to your goal instead of judging the whole study at once. Work from the largest relationships to smaller adjustments:
- Accuracy: Compare relative sizes, angles, overlaps, and spacing.
- Composition: Compare placement, balance, negative space, and focal hierarchy.
- Value: Check the largest light and dark groups first.
- Color: Compare hue and value relationships, including how colors relate to one another.
- Materials: Notice what marks, textures, or surface effects your chosen medium makes possible.
Write a short observation that points to an action, such as “The shadow mass is too narrow; check its width against the lit shape next time.” This makes comparison useful for the next attempt rather than a vague verdict on whether the study is good.

A simple first session
- Take ordinary pencil and paper, and choose a simple object or a detail from an artwork.
- Write one question, such as “How does the silhouette fit on the page?” or “Where is the largest dark shape?”
- Make a few small thumbnails and choose one with clear placement.
- Develop a study by checking its major shapes and, if relevant, values against the subject.
- Finish with two notes: one thing you noticed and one thing to try next time.
There is no established ideal duration for every study. Jerwood Visual Arts gives focused-session examples of 10, 20, or 30 minutes, while a master-study tutorial includes quick thumbnails and a longer value exercise. Treat these as possible formats, not evidence-based prescriptions for how long it takes to learn.
Materials: start with what the study needs
Pencil and paper are enough for a basic drawing study. A sketchbook is a convenient place to keep thumbnails, annotations, and repeated attempts, but loose paper works too. For other goals, select materials that fit the exercise: examples include charcoal and an eraser, or paints, brushes, a palette, and a suitable surface. No particular brand or premium product is established as necessary.

What to take from your studies
A study is complete when it has answered something useful—or shown you what to investigate next—not when every part is polished. Keep the comparison and your notes together, revisit earlier attempts, and carry one specific discovery into a different subject or your own artwork. Practical teaching guides offer exercises and assignments, but the available sources do not establish a quantified rate of improvement from doing studies; avoid treating any single exercise, duration, or grading rubric as a guaranteed result.
