To arrange flowers, start with a clean, water-holding container, fresh water, and suitable flowers. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, make clean cuts with a sharp tool, then build a shape with greenery, add focal blooms, and finish with smaller accents. You can support stems with crossed stems, a floral frog, or a waterproof tape grid; floral foam is not necessary.
What you need
- Fresh flowers and, if desired, foliage or greenery
- A clean, water-holding vase or other container
- Sharp, clean floral snips, pruning shears, or secateurs
- Fresh water and commercial flower food or preservative
- Optional stem support: crossed stems, a floral frog, or a waterproof tape grid
Keep a cloth nearby and work on a surface that can handle spills. A household container is fine if it is clean and holds water.

How to arrange flowers: the step-by-step method
- Choose the container and viewing position. Pick a clean vessel that suits the flowers. Decide whether people will see the arrangement from all sides or mainly from the front. For a centerpiece, consider how it looks from seated sightlines.
- Wash the vase and prepare the water. Clean the container with hot, soapy water. Add fresh water and commercial floral preservative according to its package directions.
- Prepare the stems. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline. Use clean, sharp floral snips or pruning shears to recut stems to fit the container, taking care not to crush them. Put prepared stems in water.
- Add support if useful. Cross stems naturally in the vase, or use a floral frog or waterproof tape grid if you need more control. A simple vase arrangement does not require floral foam.
- Build the outline with greenery. Add greenery first to establish the rough shape and a stable base. Keep stem lengths suited to the container so the arrangement does not become loose or top-heavy.
- Add the focal flowers. Place the largest or most visually dominant blooms, varying their positions and heights to create a balanced composition.
- Finish with smaller flowers and accents. Add filler and smaller blooms to soften open spaces without crowding the focal flowers. Conceal tape or other mechanics with foliage where possible.
- Check and edit the arrangement. View it from the angles where it will be seen, and adjust its proportion and balance. Avoid repeatedly pulling stems out and reinserting them, which can damage their ends.
Choosing a stem support
Stem support is optional. Choose a method based on the container opening, the control you want, and what you have on hand.
| Support | Useful when | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Crossed stems | Flowers and vase naturally hold one another in place | No extra materials are needed. |
| Floral frog | You want to control individual stem placement | Place it securely in the container. |
| Waterproof tape grid | You want to separate stems across the vase opening | Use waterproof tape and conceal the grid with foliage where possible. |
| Floral foam | You need a shaping and anchoring aid | It is not needed for the beginner method; it is single-use and cannot be composted. |
How to make an arrangement look balanced
- Check proportion: Make sure the flowers suit the size and shape of the container.
- Consider visual balance: Distribute the visual weight intentionally rather than making the arrangement accidentally lopsided or top-heavy.
- Respect the viewing angle: For a one-sided display, concentrate the design toward the front. For an all-around arrangement, turn the vase as you work.
- Leave room around the focal blooms: Smaller flowers and foliage can soften gaps, but crowding can obscure the main flowers.
- Hide mechanics: Use foliage to conceal tape or other supports when possible.
Once the arrangement looks right, avoid unnecessary stem adjustments. Finish by checking that no leaves are under the waterline.

Choosing flowers for an arrangement
Choose flowers that look fresh and are suited to the container and the display. A simple arrangement can use greenery to create its outline, larger focal blooms for emphasis, and smaller flowers or foliage for accents. Seasonal flowers available locally are a practical place to start.
Flower care after arranging
- Use clean water and commercial preservative. Follow the preservative’s package directions rather than guessing at an amount.
- Keep leaves and blooms out of the water. Remove any foliage that slips below the waterline.
- Refresh cloudy water. Replace the solution when it becomes cloudy, and recut stems as needed before returning them to the vase.
- Keep flowers cool. Place the arrangement away from direct sun and heat.
- Keep the arrangement away from ripening fruit. Ripening fruit releases ethylene, which ages flowers.
Do not treat aspirin or a penny as substitutes for commercial flower preservative; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach cautions that they are ineffective.
