“Backstitch a seam” can mean sewing the whole seam by hand with backstitch, or briefly reversing a sewing machine over the start or end of a forward-sewn seam to secure it. The hand stitch forms the seam; machine backstitching is a way to secure seam ends.
How to backstitch a seam by hand
Hand backstitch makes a continuous line of closely spaced stitches. Utah State University Extension describes it as a way to secure a seam or hem, and a U.S. government sewing manual explains that each stitch returns into the previous one. You need a hand-sewing needle and thread.

- Make a small initial stitch. Bring the needle up ahead along the seam line.
- Insert the needle back into the end of the previous stitch, then bring it up ahead again. Repeat this motion so each new stitch joins the last.
- At the end of the seam, secure the thread with a small finishing stitch or a knot suited to the project, then trim the excess.
The government manual describes the stitch this way: “The backstitch gets its name from the fact that the needle is always set back half a stitch-length into the last stitch made.” Stitch size, needle choice, thread type and finishing method depend on the fabric and project; the sources do not prescribe one universal set of dimensions or materials.
How to secure the beginning and end of a machine-sewn seam
On a sewing machine, backstitching usually means sewing in reverse over a short section at the beginning or end of a forward-sewn seam. It is not the same as sewing the entire seam by hand with backstitch.

Basic reverse stitching
Singer advises backstitching 1.3 cm at the end of a seam to secure the stitching. Treat that as Singer’s guidance, not a mandatory setting for every machine, fabric or project.
When overlapping stitches may show
Extra overlapping thread can be visible on lightweight or sheer cloth. The American Sewing Guild describes one alternative for starting a seam: place the presser foot 3/4 inch from the cut edge, sew in reverse to the edge, then sew forward along the seam. That approach leaves two thread layers rather than three. The Guild also describes backstitching 3/4 inch at the far end. These are the organization’s directions, not universal machine settings.

Which approach should you use?
