To become a nude art model, contact local life-drawing studios, art schools, university art departments, arts organizations, and life-model networks. Ask whether they are recruiting and what they require. Employers differ: some accept beginners, while others ask for previous modeling or equivalent experience. Across the role descriptions available, pose-holding ability, stamina, reliability, flexibility, and professional conduct recur.
Life modeling for drawing or painting is not blanket consent to photography, filming, or other image use. Agree on the session and its boundaries before accepting a booking, and decline any pose or use outside that agreement.

There is no single hiring route. Look for life-drawing studios, art schools, university figure-drawing courses, arts organizations, and regional model registers or societies. The Life Models’ Society FAQ and its organization overview illustrate association and directory routes. A university may recruit directly; for example, the University of Kansas has advertised a life-drawing model pool position.
Check current listings and contact venues directly to ask if they are recruiting. A past job description can help you understand what an employer may expect, but it is not evidence that the position is still open.

What employers may require—and how to apply
Read each posting carefully rather than assuming there is a standard qualification or application. Some employers accept applicants without prior modeling work; others seek experience. Follow the employer’s requested application format, and do not assume you need a portfolio or nude photographs.

These examples are specific to their employers and locations, not universal entry requirements or market rates.

What the work can involve
Depending on the venue and booking, a life model may pose clothed or nude, in short gesture sequences or longer studies, and sometimes with costumes or props. A University of Kansas role description includes both brief gestural and sustained poses, with regular breaks. Ask the venue how long poses last, how breaks work, and whether the session includes any activity beyond drawing or painting.
One Vancouver studio describes a three-hour session including breaks and recommends dynamic poses for short gestures and well-supported positions for longer ones. Its advice is specific to that studio, so confirm timing and arrangements wherever you work. A different, unusual setting was the ICA’s 2026 gallery project: it requested seated poses of up to approximately 30 minutes on a slow-moving platform. That duration should not be treated as typical of studio sessions.

How to prepare physically and professionally
Practice settling into stable positions and notice where strain develops. Ask in advance how the venue handles pose changes, breaks, props, and physical limitations. If you are struggling or feel unsafe, you can stop a pose; Vancouver Life Drawing Society’s orientation puts it plainly: “Your own safety is more important than artists’ drawings.”
Professionalism includes confirming bookings, arriving ready, communicating limitations, and keeping the session focused on the agreed artistic setting. The Vancouver studio recommends arriving early enough to check timing and props; its orientation also emphasizes confirming the session. Ask whether there is a session manager or another designated contact if a concern arises.

Before accepting a booking, get clear answers—ideally in writing or in a booking message—about what you are agreeing to. A life-drawing engagement does not itself authorize photographs, video, or other image use.
- Session: Is the work for drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, filming, or another purpose? What poses, session length, pose duration, breaks, and attendees should you expect?
- Pay and cancellation: What is the minimum paid time, when is payment made, and what happens if either side cancels? Are preparation time or travel covered? Is image use separately priced?
- Facilities and support: Is there a private changing room, robe or covering, suitable warmth, seating, clean props, and a contact person on site?
- Privacy: Are photography and recording prohibited or allowed under specific conditions? What happens to artists’ work or any documentation?
- Consent and stopping: How can you refuse a pose, pause, or end the session if it feels unsafe or goes beyond what was agreed?
The Life Models’ Society’s member standards call for a safe and comfortable work area, a nearby changing room, regular breaks, privacy, explicit consent before photography, and the right to refuse poses considered inappropriate or dangerous. These are that association’s standards, not a universal legal minimum. Vancouver Life Drawing Society says that only its session manager may direct the model, photography is strictly prohibited at its sessions, and concerns can be raised with the manager, booker, or board. Ask each venue for its own policy rather than assuming one studio’s rules apply elsewhere.

Legal protections also depend on location. For example, New York Labor Law §1037, in the revision shown as 27 June 2025, sets out protections for covered engagements concerning safety policies, accompaniment, insurance, meal breaks, increased pay beyond eight hours in a 24-hour period, and written consent for creating or using a digital replica. This is New York law, not a general rule for work in other places; check the law that applies where you will work.

When assessing an offer, compare the full terms: minimum paid time, breaks, preparation and travel, cancellation pay, payment timing, and any separate fee for photography or other image use. The Life Models’ Society’s standards specify full pay for cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice; that is the association’s stated standard, so confirm the cancellation terms that apply to your own booking.
What to bring—and what you may not need
Ask the venue what it supplies before buying equipment or clothing. The Vancouver studio says many of its models wear a robe or light covering during breaks and asks them to bring a sheet for sitting or reclining poses because its props are not laundered after every session. Those are that studio’s arrangements, not a universal kit list.
