An artist’s sandpaper block is a small abrasive tool for refining the points of drawing materials such as charcoal, soft pastels, pastel pencils and drawing pencils. It can also clean and reshape a paper blending stump, and it can scrape pigment from a soft pastel for use in a drawing. It is a tool—not the sanded paper sometimes used as a pastel surface.
What does an art sandpaper block do?
The most common use is point shaping. Lightly rub the end or side of a stick against the abrasive and check the shape as you go. This lets you refine a drawing point without relying on a conventional sharpener. Jackson’s describes a wood-backed block with fine and coarse abrasive strips for lead points, charcoal sticks, soft pastels and pastel pencils; BLICK also describes a wood-mounted fine-sandpaper block for drawing pencils, charcoal, pastels and crayons. Jackson’s product details are available here.

For delicate media such as pastel pencils, use it as a controlled way to refine a point, not as a surface to press or grind against forcefully. Caran d’Ache presents a sandpaper block as an option for sharpening delicate pencils, particularly pastel pencils, but does not claim it is always better than other methods. The sources do not establish a universal grit, pressure or sequence, so check the point frequently and use a light touch.
Other uses: blending stumps and pastel pigment
Clean and reshape a blending stump
A blending stump can become loaded with pigment or lose its tip. Rub and rotate the worn end lightly on the abrasive to remove the outer, dirty surface and expose a cleaner, sharper point. Caran d’Ache includes sandpaper-block maintenance for blending stumps in its drawing-supplies guidance.

Scrape pigment from a soft pastel
This is different from sharpening: scrape a little pigment from the pastel stick with the block, then apply the pigment to the drawing or collect it on another sheet of paper for later use. Faber-Castell describes scraping soft-pastel pigment with a knife or sandpaper block and working the resulting pigment into an image. See its soft-pastel tutorial.
Sandpaper block versus sanded pastel paper
The names are easy to mix up. A sandpaper block is a handheld abrasive tool used on drawing materials. Sanded pastel paper is a drawing surface; Canson discusses sandpaper-type paper as one category of surface for pastel work in its guide to choosing pastel paper. The paper is where you make the artwork; the block is a tool you use to shape or scrape materials.

How to choose the right tool for the task
- For a fine point: An artist sandpaper block or sandpaper pointer can help refine a drawing pencil, charcoal or pastel pencil. For fragile media, work gently and check the shape often.
- For a broader edge: Shape the side of the stick rather than concentrating on its end, checking the result as you go.
- For stump maintenance: Use the abrasive to remove the worn or pigment-loaded surface and restore the tip.
- For loose pastel pigment: Scrape pigment from the stick rather than treating the task as sharpening.
Products vary: Jackson’s describes a wood-backed block with two grades, while BLICK describes a wood-mounted fine-sandpaper block. Not every product sold as a sanding block is intended for delicate art materials, so look for one specifically described for drawing pencils, charcoal or pastels. The cited product descriptions do not establish a generally suitable grit or a performance ranking against other sharpening methods.
