An inkle loom holds a continuous warp under tension so you can weave narrow bands. For a fixed wooden loom, build a frame from hardwood stock, seven pegs, and a sliding tension rod. For a portable alternative, Interweave’s CPVC plan uses snug-fit pipe connectors and threaded rods. Keep the plans separate: their frames and tension adjustments are different.
Choose a plan before buying materials
The wooden plan published by Make: is a fixed hardwood frame with a slot-and-bolt tension rod. Interweave’s CPVC loom is designed to come apart for travel and adjusts tension with paired nuts on two threaded rods. Neither source supplies independent comparative testing or formal load ratings.

| Plan | Materials and assembly | Tension adjustment | Capacity or project width stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden loom (Make:, 2011; updated 2018) | Hardwood stock, dowel pegs, screws, and glue; fixed, screwed-and-glued construction. | Slide the hanger bolt along the base slot, then secure it with a washer and wing nut. | No warp capacity or project width stated in the article. |
| Portable CPVC loom (Interweave / Handwoven, 2009) | CPVC pipe and connectors; snug-fit rather than glued so it can be disassembled. | Adjust paired nuts on two threaded rods; move nut pairs toward each other to loosen and away from each other to tighten. | The guide describes an 80-inch warp. Its example project weaves 3/4 inch wide. |
Choose the wooden plan if you have access to the specified stock and want a fixed frame. Choose the CPVC plan if disassembly for travel matters and its pipe-and-fitting list suits your materials access. The listed capacities and project width belong to those plans, not to every loom built from similar materials.
Build the wooden loom
The measurements below follow Kristin M. Roach’s Make: plan. Its materials list gives both nominal lumber sizes and actual dimensions; check that the actual stock you buy can yield the finished cuts.

Materials and cut list
- Hardwood stock listed nominally as 1×2×12 inches, 1×3×24 inches, 1×4×48 inches, and 1×6×24 inches. The article’s corresponding actual dimensions are 3/4×1 1/2×24 inches, 3/4×2 1/2×24 inches, 3/4×3 1/2×48 inches, and 3/4×6 1/2×24 inches. Follow the plan’s cut list and illustrations when selecting stock; the nominal labels and stated actual lengths are not interchangeable.
- Two 36-inch lengths of 3/4-inch dowel rod, cut into seven pegs, each 5 1/4 inches long.
- Four 5/8-inch #8 screws and twelve 1 1/2-inch #8 screws.
- A 1/4-inch hanger bolt, 1/4-inch disc washer, and wing nut.
- Wood glue, sandpaper, polyurethane sealant, and a scrap block for pressing pegs into place.
- A saw and drill with suitable bits. The plan describes coping-saw cuts; power saws are optional.
Cut the listed parts: one 1×4×30-inch base (A), two 1×3×12-inch sides (B), one 1×2×5-inch tension rod (C), one 1×6×16-inch base piece (D), and seven 3/4-inch dowels, each 5 1/4 inches long (E).
Assemble the frame and pegs
- Cut the corner-lap and plain-lap joints connecting the long base (A) and side pieces (B). Use the linked plan illustrations for the exact joint shapes and peg locations; the article’s text does not provide a calibrated drawing or enough dimensions to infer all spacing.
- On base A, cut a slot 3/8 inch wide and 5 inches long, centered vertically and 2 inches from the end opposite the laps.
- Glue and screw the two side pieces to the long base. Sand cut edges and joints smooth.
- Mark the peg positions using the plan illustrations. Drill recesses 1/4 inch deep, then drill pilot holes through from the back.
- Glue the seven pegs in place, using a scrap block to press them into their recesses, and secure them with screws as directed in the plan.
- Attach the wider base piece (D) to the side of the loom as shown in the illustrations.
Make and adjust the tension rod
- Drill the end of tension rod C to fit the hanger bolt, following the Make: illustration for placement.
- Install the hanger bolt through the slot in base A, then fit the disc washer and wing nut.
- To adjust tension after warping, slide the bolt along the slot and tighten the wing nut to hold the rod in position.
The wooden plan describes this slot-and-peg arrangement as allowing the continuous warp to move through the loom so you can weave its length. It does not state tested tolerances or a load limit. For the full illustrations and original sequence, see Make:’s wooden inkle loom plan.

Build the portable CPVC loom instead
This is a separate design, not a pipe-based variation of the wooden frame. Its parts and adjustment method should be used together as specified by Interweave’s plan.
Materials and cuts
- One 10-foot length of 1/2-inch CPVC pipe; ten 1/2-inch T connectors; six 1/2-inch L connectors; and two 1/2-inch caps.
- Two 3/8×24-inch threaded rods (20 threads per inch), eight matching nuts, and four washers wider than the T connectors.
- Transparent tape and two packages of 1/4-inch elastic cord.
- Cut the pipe into two 16-inch front pieces, two 2 1/2-inch back pieces, seven 6-inch cross pieces, three 5-inch pieces, six 1 1/2-inch connector pieces, and one 7-inch shed rod.
Fit the frame and set tension
- Assemble the CPVC pieces and connectors as shown in Interweave’s plan. Fit the connectors snugly, but do not glue them; the unglued joints let the frame come apart for travel.
- Set up each threaded rod with its washers and nut pairs in the positions shown in the plan: a washer and two nuts at each of two positions.
- Adjust the paired nuts to change tension. Moving the pairs toward each other loosens it; moving them away from each other tightens it.
- Finger-tighten the nuts and check that the washer-to-washer measurements on the two sides are within 1/8 inch.
Interweave describes this frame as accommodating an 80-inch warp. The plan is intended for small projects such as hatbands and bookmarks. Its example uses a 34-end alternating dark-and-light warp, about 45 ends per inch, a 3/4-inch weaving width, and a 26-inch woven length with 5-inch braided fringe at each end; those are example-project dimensions, not universal loom specifications. See the Interweave guide to inkle weaving for its frame illustrations and project instructions.

What you need to start weaving
Once the loom is assembled, you need thread for the warp and weft, heddles to control the warp, and simple tools to hold the sheds and pass the weft. Interweave’s example project specifies #10 cotton crochet thread or 5/2 pearl cotton, with about 25 yards each of white and black warp thread and about 8 yards of weft. Those quantities are for that sample, not a general requirement.
- Smooth string or strong sewing thread for heddles.
- Popsicle sticks to hold sheds during setup and a small pick-up stick.
- A shuttle; Interweave’s example says one can be cut from a laminate sample.
The guide’s setup ties heddles around the castle upright and winds a continuous warp without crossing the threads. Use the project instructions for the chosen loom to establish the warp path and sheds.

Build carefully and follow the matching instructions
- Sand wooden edges and peg ends so they are smooth where thread will pass.
- Use the plan illustrations rather than estimating unspecified lap geometry or peg spacing.
- Keep the wooden loom’s sliding slot-and-bolt adjustment separate from the CPVC loom’s paired-nut adjustment.
- Do not assume a warp capacity or safe load beyond what the relevant plan states.
