A convincing skeleton face needs four elements: a pale base, dark eye sockets and nose, elongated teeth, and hollows that follow the cheekbones and jaw. Apply those shapes in that order, using cosmetics labeled for the skin area where you will place them, then set and remove the makeup carefully.
What you need
Use products made for cosmetic or theatrical face application rather than craft paint or unlabelled pigments.

A practical shopping description is “white and black theatrical face paint kit,” supplemented with brushes or a sponge, black eyeliner and setting powder. Check every package for its intended body area, especially before applying a vivid color near the eyes.
Prepare your skin and products
- Start with clean, completely dry skin. A light layer of moisturizer or primer can help makeup adhere, but allow it to settle before painting.
- Read each label before opening it. A color approved for general cosmetic use is not automatically approved for the eye area.
- Test unfamiliar makeup on a small area of your arm 24–48 hours before the event. Do not use it if redness, itching, burning or swelling develops.
Build the skeleton face
1. Paint the pale bone base
Use a sponge or broad brush to spread a thin, even layer of white cream makeup over the face. Work around the eyes and lips without forcing product into either area. Layer gradually rather than applying one heavy coat; an even surface makes the dark shapes easier to control.

2. Map and fill the eye sockets
With a black pencil or brush, sketch large socket shapes around the eyes. Follow the natural orbital area, then extend the outer corners slightly toward the temples for a graphic skull silhouette. Fill the shapes with black, and blend a little dark purple at the outer edges for dimension. Covering the brows can make the sockets read as one continuous cavity, but keep all products close to the eyes only when their labels permit that use.

Paint a black, simplified nasal cavity: broaden it at the nostrils and taper it toward the bridge. Leave enough of the white base around the shape to preserve the impression of a bone ridge between the eye sockets.

4. Plan the teeth before painting
Use a fine brush to lightly mark the top and bottom boundaries of the mouth design. Extend the skull mouth beyond the natural corners if you want a more dramatic result. Then draw individual teeth with white and black liquid face paint, alternating the widths and allowing small gaps so the row does not look like a solid fence. A small angled brush helps create crisp points; black liner can sharpen the spaces between teeth.
5. Carve the cheek and jaw hollows
Trace a curved hollow beneath each cheekbone, sweeping from the side of the nose toward the ear. Shade the deepest part in black and soften the upper edge with dark purple or a little black shadow. Continue the design along the jawline, narrowing the dark area near the chin so the white base still suggests a mandible. Step back periodically to check that both sides are balanced without making them perfectly identical.

6. Add definition and highlights
Deepen only the recesses that need more contrast: the inner eye sockets, nasal cavity, cheek centers and gaps between teeth. Keep the raised “bone” planes lighter. A small amount of shimmer powder on the forehead, cheek ridges or tooth surfaces can catch light, but it is optional and should be kept away from the eyes unless the label allows eye-area use.

For a full skull effect, carry the design below the jaw and onto the neck. Paint dark negative space on either side while leaving a central vertical strip for the spine. Sketch white vertebra-like blocks down that strip, then add curved white lines over the collarbones. Stop at clothing edges if the product is not intended for larger body areas, and avoid applying makeup to broken or irritated skin.

Set the design
Allow wet lines to dry without rubbing. Press a matching black or white setting powder lightly over painted areas to reduce tackiness, then use setting spray only as directed on its label. Setting products can improve transfer resistance, but they do not make an unsuitable product safe for the eyes or guarantee all-night wear.
Removal and eye safety
- Follow the product’s removal directions and loosen makeup gently, particularly around the eyes.
- Do not sleep in novelty or theatrical makeup. Remove it before bed even if the design still looks intact.
- Stop immediately if you experience burning, pain, swelling or persistent irritation; rinse as directed by the product label and seek medical advice for severe or continuing symptoms.
- Decorative colored contact lenses are not a makeup accessory to buy casually. FDA guidance says they require a prescription and professional fitting.
Quick troubleshooting
The white base looks streaky
Use less product per layer, stipple with a damp—not wet—sponge, and let each layer settle before adding another.
The black areas bleed into the white
Wait for liquid paint to dry, then powder it before refining nearby edges. Use a clean, small brush for the white corrections.

The teeth look flat
Vary their width and length, leave dark gaps, and add a thin shadow along one side of each tooth to create separation.
The face feels tight or irritated
Remove the makeup gently and discontinue the product. An advance patch test helps identify a reaction before Halloween night, but it cannot guarantee that irritation will not occur later.
