To calculate the Asian Paints needed for one room, measure each wall, subtract doors and windows, add the ceiling only if you will paint it, and divide the paintable area by the selected product’s coverage per litre per coat. Multiply by the number of coats, then round up to available packs and keep a small touch-up reserve. For a material estimate, add finish paint, primer, putty and other preparation materials; a complete project estimate must also include labour and repairs.
Asian Paints says most interior wall paints cover approximately 120 to 150 square feet per litre per coat. That is a planning range, not a guarantee for every product or wall. The exact label coverage, substrate condition, application method, shade, finish, location and pack prices determine what you should buy and pay.

What measurements do I need before calculating paint quantity?
Write down the finished height and the length of every wall. Also record the width and height of each door and window, the ceiling dimensions, the number of coats, the exact Asian Paints product and its label coverage. Separating these inputs prevents a shortcut estimate from hiding a large opening, a high wall or a ceiling that is not being painted.
- Wall lengths: measure from corner to corner along each wall.
- Finished wall height: measure from the floor to the surface that will receive paint, not to an unpainted structural void.
- Openings: measure every door, window or other permanently unpainted opening.
- Ceiling: measure its length and width if it is included in the job.
- Coats: use the number specified for the selected product and finish.
- Coverage: read the label for the exact product; do not assume every interior paint has the same spread rate.
Keep dimensions in one unit. If you measure in feet, calculate areas in square feet and use a coverage figure expressed in square feet per litre per coat.

How do I calculate the wall area room by room?
The most reliable method is wall by wall. Calculate each rectangle, then add the results. This works for a rectangular room and can be extended to recesses, alcoves or other sections by treating each section as another rectangle.
- Multiply the first wall’s length by the finished height.
- Repeat for every other wall.
- Add all wall rectangles to obtain the gross wall area.
- Calculate each door and window area separately.
- Add the opening areas and subtract them from the gross wall area.
The basic equations are:
Wall area = (wall 1 length × height) + (wall 2 length × height) + …
Net wall area = gross wall area − total door and window area
For a simple rectangular room, the same calculation can be written as:
Gross wall area = 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height
Use the wall-by-wall version when dimensions are irregular or when openings are different sizes. It also gives you an audit trail if the final quantity seems unexpectedly high or low.

Multiply the width and height of each opening. For several identical windows, calculate one and multiply by the number of windows. Subtract only surfaces that will not receive the paint being estimated. If a door is being painted with a different product, leave its area out of this wall-paint calculation and estimate that product separately.
Do not subtract skirting, narrow trim or furniture unless those surfaces are genuinely outside the planned paint area. The objective is the area the selected paint will cover, not every empty space visible in the room.
Should I include the ceiling in the calculation?
Include the ceiling only when it is part of the painting job. For a rectangular ceiling, multiply its length by its width and add that area to the net wall area. A ceiling is often painted with a different product or finish, so calculate it separately when the label or quote uses a different coverage rate.

Asian Paints’ budget-calculator shortcut estimates wall painting area as carpet area multiplied by 2.5 and treats ceiling area as equal to carpet area. This is useful for a quick budget, but a measured wall-by-wall calculation is preferable when you have the dimensions and openings.
Do not add the shortcut estimate to a measured wall total. Choose one method for the walls, then add a measured or separately estimated ceiling if required.
What coverage should I use for Asian Paints interior paint?
Use the coverage printed for the exact product, sheen and application system. Asian Paints states: “Most interior wall paints cover approximately 120 to 150 square feet per litre per coat.” Treat that 120–150 square feet per litre per coat range as a planning interval, not as a promise for every surface.
Coverage changes in practice because porous or previously unsealed walls absorb more material, preparation may leave a different texture, and application methods can spread paint differently. The label’s instructions and the condition of the wall should take priority over a generic online calculator.
| Input | What to use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Paintable area | Net walls plus any included ceiling | More area increases litres in direct proportion. |
| Coverage | Exact product label; 120–150 sq ft/L/coat is a general planning range | A lower spread rate requires more paint. |
| Coats | The specified number of finish coats | Two coats use twice the one-coat quantity before rounding. |
| Surface condition | Porous, repaired, sound or previously painted substrate | Asian Paints cautions that quantity may vary with substrate condition. |
What is the formula for litres of paint?
Once the paintable area, coverage and coat count are known, use:
Paint required (litres) = paintable area (square feet) ÷ coverage (square feet per litre per coat) × number of coats.
Calculate a range when the only available information is the 120–150 coverage interval. Divide by 150 to see the lower-litre case and by 120 to see the higher-litre case. Then use the selected product’s label to replace the generic range before purchasing.
Worked example: a 12-by-10-foot room
Assume a room is 12 feet long, 10 feet wide and has 10-foot walls. It has one 3-by-7-foot door and two 2-by-4-foot windows.
- Perimeter:
2 × (12 + 10) = 44 feet. - Gross wall area:
44 × 10 = 440 square feet. - Door area:
3 × 7 = 21 square feet. - Two window areas:
2 × (2 × 4) = 16 square feet. - Total openings:
21 + 16 = 37 square feet. - Net wall area:
440 − 37 = 403 square feet.
If the 120-square-foot ceiling is also painted, total paintable area is 403 + 120 = 523 square feet.

For two finish coats, the arithmetic using the general coverage range is:
| Coverage assumption | Calculation | Unrounded result |
|---|---|---|
| 150 sq ft/L/coat | 523 ÷ 150 × 2 |
About 6.97 litres |
| 120 sq ft/L/coat | 523 ÷ 120 × 2 |
About 8.72 litres |
Those figures are an arithmetic range for the illustration, not a quotation or a product guarantee. If the ceiling is excluded, use 403 square feet instead of 523. The final purchase should follow the chosen product label, the wall’s porosity, the application method and the preparation system.
How does the 1,000-square-foot example work?
Asian Paints gives an illustrative calculation of 1,000 sq ft ÷ 100 sq ft/L/coat × 2 coats = 20 litres. It demonstrates the formula with a 100-square-foot-per-litre assumption; it is not a universal quantity for every room or every interior product.
How do I convert the litre result into cans?
Paint is sold in fixed pack sizes, so the mathematical result is an input to purchasing rather than a pack instruction. Check the current pack sizes for the exact product and shade, then choose a combination whose total volume is at least the calculated requirement. Round up rather than down and retain a small amount for future touch-ups.

- Use the same product, shade and finish for all finish coats unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.
- Keep the final calculation and batch details with the leftover paint so a later touch-up does not require colour matching from memory.
- Confirm that the selected pack sizes are actually available in your location before using them in a budget.
The exact reserve cannot be fixed from room dimensions alone. A porous wall, spray or roller application, colour change and the amount of future maintenance all affect how much extra is sensible.
How do I calculate the total Asian Paints cost?
Start with a material-only estimate, then build a full-job estimate if someone else will prepare or paint the room.
Material total = finish-paint litres × effective price per litre + primer + putty + other preparation materials.
“Effective price per litre” should be based on the actual packs you must buy, not merely the ideal litre calculation. If the only practical purchase is a larger pack, use its price and volume in the estimate. Add any additional product used for the ceiling, trim or a different surface.
| Cost component | Include when | How to estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Finish paint | Always | Use the rounded pack combination for the selected product and shade. |
| Primer | Fresh, porous, repaired or otherwise specified surfaces | Use the primer’s own label coverage and coat requirement. |
| Putty | New work, repairs or uneven surfaces | Estimate from the area and the depth of filling required. |
| Other preparation materials | Crack treatment, sanding or masking requires them | List each item rather than hiding it in a paint-only figure. |
| Labour | For a complete job estimate | Obtain a labour quote based on preparation, access and application scope. |
Asian Paints says its budget calculator’s price per litre is based on the largest available pack size. It also warns that the final cost can vary with the chosen shade and finish, and that the displayed budget total is for products only, with labour excluded. Therefore, a calculator total should not be presented as a contractor’s final invoice.

Do fresh walls and repainting need the same quantity and preparation?
No. Fresh painting commonly needs more preparation because the substrate may require putty and primer before finish coats. A sound repaint may need less preparation, although cleaning, filling, sanding or priming can still be necessary.
Fresh painting
- Clean dust, grease and loose material.
- Fill cracks, holes and uneven areas with the appropriate material.
- Sand repaired or rough sections so the finish is even.
- Apply primer and putty as required by the surface and product system.
- Apply the specified finish coats, allowing the first coat to dry before the second.
Repainting
- Check that the existing coating is sound rather than peeling or powdery.
- Clean and repair defects before deciding how much primer or putty is needed.
- Do not assume that a previously painted wall has the same coverage as a sealed new wall.
- Use quality rollers and brushes and follow the product’s drying instructions.
Asian Paints’ regional calculator models fresh painting with two coats each of primer, putty and fresh paint, with Royale, Apcolite and Tractor available as selectable paint choices. Those are calculator assumptions for that scenario, not a rule that every room or repaint needs all three materials and two coats.

How should I compare two paint estimates?
Put both estimates on the same assumptions before comparing the totals. A lower figure may simply omit the ceiling, preparation, a coat, labour or the difference between a measured area and a shortcut.
| Comparison point | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Area | Are both estimates using the same net wall area, openings and ceiling scope? |
| Coats | Does each figure state the number of primer, putty and finish coats? |
| Coverage | Is the exact product label rate used, or is one estimate using a generic assumption? |
| Preparation | Are cleaning, filling, sanding, priming and crack treatment included? |
| Cost basis | Is the amount materials only, or does it include labour and access work? |
| Price validity | Do shade, finish, pack size, location and current availability match? |
Never quote one universal rupee figure for “a room” without stating dimensions, product, shade, location, pack assumptions and labour scope. Two rooms with the same floor area can require different quantities because wall height, openings, porosity and ceiling treatment differ.
What are the most common calculation mistakes?
Using carpet area as the actual wall area
The carpet-area shortcut is an estimate. It can be useful for an early budget, but it does not show where doors, windows, unusual wall lengths or high ceilings change the result. Use measured walls when you are deciding what to buy.
Forgetting the second coat
Coverage is normally stated per coat. Multiply by the number of finish coats before rounding to packs.

Treating a calculator price as current everywhere
Pack availability, shade, finish and location can change the effective price. Check the product listing or local quotation immediately before purchase.
Ignoring substrate condition
Asian Paints states, “The quantity may vary depending on substrate condition.” A wall that absorbs heavily or needs extensive repair can require more material than a smooth, sealed surface with the same measured area.
What is the quickest worksheet for one room?
Use this sequence on paper or in a spreadsheet. Keep the unrounded calculations so another person can verify the estimate.
- List every wall length and the finished height.
- Calculate and add the wall rectangles.
- List each door and window size, calculate its area and subtract the total.
- Add the ceiling only if it will be painted.
- Record the exact product, shade, finish, label coverage and required coats.
- Divide paintable area by coverage and multiply by coats.
- Round up to available packs and retain a touch-up reserve.
- Price finish paint, primer, putty and preparation materials separately.
- Add labour, repairs, access equipment and special finishes for a complete-job total.
- Check pack availability and current local prices before ordering.
Save the worksheet with the product name and batch information. It gives you a defensible explanation for the quantity and makes it easier to revise the estimate if the ceiling, coat count or preparation scope changes.
When should I use an Asian Paints calculator or request a quotation?
Use the budget calculator for a quick products-only planning figure, especially when you need a preliminary number before measuring every wall. Use the quotation calculator or a professional quotation when preparation, labour, repairs, access, ceiling work or a special finish makes a paint-only calculation incomplete.
Whichever tool you use, check the assumptions it displays: wall or carpet-area method, ceiling inclusion, fresh versus repainting, coat count, selected product, pack-size basis and whether labour is excluded. Replace estimates with measured dimensions and current product details before buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can the calculator quantity differ from my wall-by-wall measurement?
A calculator may use Asian Paints’ shortcut of carpet area multiplied by 2.5 for walls, while a measured method subtracts each door and window. The two approaches are estimates built from different inputs, so compare their assumptions before treating a difference as an error.
Is the ceiling automatically included in a room-paint estimate?
Not necessarily. Include it only when it is part of the work, and identify it separately if the ceiling uses another product or coverage rate. Asian Paints’ shortcut treats ceiling area as equal to carpet area, but that is an estimate rather than an instruction to paint every ceiling.
Why does the quoted price change when I keep the same room size?
The effective price can change with the selected shade, finish and available pack size. Asian Paints also bases its budget-calculator price per litre on the largest available pack, so a different pack combination can alter the total even when the calculated litres stay constant.
What assumptions does the regional fresh-painting calculator make?
Asian Paints’ regional calculator models fresh painting with two coats each of primer, putty and fresh paint and offers Royale, Apcolite and Tractor as selectable choices. Those settings describe that calculator scenario; they do not establish that every surface or repaint requires the same system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use the 1,000-square-foot example as my room’s buying quantity?
No. The 20-litre result comes from an illustrative 100-square-foot-per-litre rate and two coats. Your room’s measured paintable area, product label, surface condition and coat requirement must replace those example assumptions.
