To calculate Dulux paint, measure the walls, subtract the area of doors and windows, multiply the remaining area by the number of coats, then divide by the selected product’s spread rate in square metres per litre (m²/L). For a rectangular room, the wall formula is 2 × (length + width) × wall height. Calculate ceilings, trim and primer separately because they have different areas, coat requirements and coverage rates. Add a modest touch-up allowance and round up to a can size sold in your market. The result is an estimate: texture, porosity, colour changes, sheen and the exact Dulux product can all change actual consumption.

What is the formula for calculating Dulux paint?

Use the same sequence for any room: find the surface area, remove openings that will not be painted, apply the required number of coats, and divide by the product’s own coverage figure.

Calculation Formula
Gross wall area (rectangular room) 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height
Paintable wall area Gross wall area − total door and window area
Coated area Paintable wall area × number of coats
Litres required Coated area ÷ product spread rate (m²/L)
Ceiling area Room length × room width

Use the spread rate printed on the tin or on the product page for the exact Dulux range, finish and colour. Dulux Australia’s guidance explains the calculation as surface area divided by coverage per litre, multiplied by the number of coats. Its calculator generally assumes two topcoats, but the product instructions take priority.

How do I measure a room before buying paint?

Gather a metal tape measure, step ladder, paper, pen and calculator. Record every dimension in metres so the final area is in square metres.

Measure each wall

Measure the width of each wall and the average wall height from finished floor to ceiling. In a straightforward rectangle, measuring the length, width and height is enough; the perimeter shortcut then gives the total wall area. If the ceiling slopes, the room has alcoves, or walls have different heights, divide the room into rectangles and calculate each section separately.

Measure doors and windows

Measure the width and height of every door, window and other opening that will remain unpainted. Multiply each width by its height, then add the results. Subtract that combined area from the gross wall area. Include only the surfaces you are genuinely excluding: a door that will receive the same wall paint still belongs in the paintable area.

Separate surfaces by product

Make separate lines for walls, ceiling, skirting boards, architraves, doors and any built-in cabinetry. These surfaces usually use different Dulux products or finishes, and each product can have a different spread rate. Do not combine all of the areas and apply one generic coverage number.

How much paint does a 4 × 5 metre room need?

Consider a rectangular room 4 m long, 5 m wide and 2.4 m high. Suppose its doors and windows occupy 6 m² and the walls will receive two coats.

  1. Gross wall area: 2 × (4 + 5) × 2.4 = 43.2 m².
  2. Paintable wall area: 43.2 − 6 = 37.2 m².
  3. Two-coat area: 37.2 × 2 = 74.4 m².
  4. Paint volume: 74.4 ÷ 16 m²/L = 4.65 L when using the general Dulux Wall guide of 16 m²/L.

That calculation points to a practical 5 L purchase, subject to the exact pack sizes available where you live. Check the tin before buying because a particular colour, finish or product line can state a different spread rate.

What if the ceiling is included?

The ceiling is 4 × 5 = 20 m². For two ceiling coats, calculate 20 × 2 and divide by the ceiling paint’s own m²/L figure. Add that quantity to the wall paint only if the ceiling product and wall product are being purchased separately; never assume the wall rate applies overhead.

How much paint is needed for a 4 × 4 room?

A quick store estimate from Dulux UK indicates about 5 litres for all walls of a 4 × 4 m room. That figure is an in-store guide rather than a substitute for measuring: wall height, openings, coats, texture and the selected product can move the requirement up or down.

For an exact result, use the perimeter method. With a 4 m × 4 m room and 2.4 m walls, gross wall area is 2 × (4 + 4) × 2.4 = 38.4 m². Subtract the measured door and window area, multiply by the specified coats, and divide by the tin’s coverage. The quick 5 L estimate and the calculated result should be treated as different levels of precision, not competing guarantees.

How much paint does a small 2 × 2 metre room need?

Dulux UK’s current guide gives around 2.5 litres for all walls of a 2 × 2 m room. It is designed for a fast shop-floor estimate and does not state every assumption in the short figure. Measure the actual wall height and openings if the purchase needs to be tight, especially when the room has a high ceiling or a large window.

What spread rate should I use for Dulux paint?

Use the number for the product you selected, not a universal Dulux number. Dulux Australia’s 2026 guidance lists 16 m² per litre for its general Wall, Trim or Ceiling paint guide and 14 m² per litre for Dulux Primer. Those are published guide figures; the tin or current product instructions control for a specific product.

Product or estimate Published figure How to use it
Dulux Wall, Trim or Ceiling paint guide (Australia, 2026 page version) 16 m²/L Use only when the selected product’s instructions give the same rate.
Dulux Primer (Australia, 2026 page version) 14 m²/L Calculate primer as its own coat; do not add primer litres to topcoat litres.
All walls of a 2 × 2 m room (Dulux UK quick guide, accessed 2026) About 2.5 L Fast estimate; measure the room for a purchase based on actual conditions.
All walls of a 4 × 4 m room (Dulux UK quick guide, accessed 2026) About 5 L Fast estimate; not a product-specific coverage guarantee.

Spread rate is not the same as guaranteed finished coverage. Manufacturers derive guide figures under stated application conditions; roller type, substrate and application technique affect how far a litre goes in practice.

How many coats of Dulux paint do I need?

Read the exact can or product page and follow its preparation and recoat instructions. Dulux says its Australian calculator assumes two coats of topcoat for most Dulux paints, but that assumption does not override a product that specifies a different system.

When two coats are a sensible starting point

Two coats are a common planning basis for interior topcoat. They help even out sheen and colour, particularly when the old surface is marked or the new colour differs noticeably. Multiply the paintable area by two before dividing by the spread rate.

When the specified system changes

A product may call for a preparation coat, a separate primer, or additional topcoats. Count every coat that uses the product being estimated. If primer is required, calculate the primed area with the primer’s own spread rate, then calculate topcoat separately. A primer allowance is not a replacement for the topcoat allowance.

Why a colour change can require more paint

Strong colour changes can need extra coats or a tinted preparation coat to achieve an even result. A pale colour over a deep, saturated colour may not hide in the same number of coats as a similar colour over white. Treat the product’s hiding and colour-change advice as part of the calculation, not as an afterthought.

Do I subtract windows and doors from the wall area?

Yes, subtract openings that will not receive the wall paint. Calculate each opening as width × height, add them together, and subtract that total from the gross wall area. The saving is often modest in a room with small windows, but it becomes material when there are multiple doors, a large glazed wall or full-height openings.

Do not subtract skirting boards, architraves or doors if they are being painted with the same product. Instead, include their surfaces in the relevant trim or door calculation and use the finish’s stated spread rate. Removing an area and then painting it with another product would understate the total paint needed.

How do I calculate ceiling, trim and door paint?

Ceilings

Multiply room length by room width for a rectangular ceiling. For a 4 m × 5 m room, that is 20 m² before coats. Multiply by the ceiling coats and divide by the ceiling paint’s m²/L figure. A textured or previously unpainted ceiling can absorb more than a smooth sealed one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skirting boards and architraves

Measure the visible width of each run and its height, or break the trim into simple rectangles. Include both sides only when both sides will be coated. Count separate primer and finish coats if the trim system requires them.

Doors

Measure the faces that will be painted, including both faces when applicable, and account for edges if the product instructions or finish demands it. A panelled door has more actual surface than its overall rectangle suggests, so allow extra rather than treating the panel pattern as a perfectly flat slab.

Irregular rooms and alcoves

Split an L-shaped room into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle’s walls, subtract its openings, then add the paintable areas. For a stairwell or double-height section, measure each wall plane separately; do not use a single average height that hides the tallest areas.

What makes the calculated amount change?

Room dimensions are only one input. Dulux notes that actual requirements vary with the surface, product range, sheen and colour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Texture: Rough or heavily textured walls have more surface area than their measured footprint and use more paint.
  • Porosity: New plaster, bare masonry and other porous substrates can absorb the first coat quickly. Sealing or priming may be necessary.
  • Previous colour: A strong contrast can reduce hiding and increase the number of coats.
  • Surface condition: Patching, sanding and uneven repairs create areas with different absorption.
  • Sheen: Matt, low-sheen, satin and higher-sheen products can have different spread rates and application behaviour.
  • Application method: The recommended roller nap, brush loading and spray settings affect transfer and loss.
  • Pack size: The mathematically exact litre figure may not match a can sold locally, so round up to the next practical size.
  • Regional formulation: Dulux ranges, colours, pack sizes and stated coverage can differ between countries. Use the local tin or product page.

Should I add a waste or touch-up allowance?

Yes. After dividing by the spread rate, add a small allowance for roller loading, brush work, spills and later touch-ups. The available data does not establish one universal percentage, so avoid presenting a fixed wastage rate as a Dulux rule. Instead, round up to the next practical can size and retain a labelled, sealed remainder for future repairs when possible.

Do not compensate for severe porosity or texture only by adding a random percentage. Those conditions may require a primer or sealer, and the correct product system is more reliable than an oversized topcoat purchase.

How do I use a calculator without overbuying?

A calculator is useful for arithmetic, but its output is only as good as the inputs. Enter dimensions in one unit, identify the product and finish, and verify whether the calculator assumes two coats.

  1. Write down room length, width and each wall height.
  2. Enter every door and window area, not a guess for “openings.”
  3. Select the exact Dulux product, finish and local market if the tool offers those choices.
  4. Confirm the listed m²/L rate and required coats against the can.
  5. Calculate walls, ceiling, trim and primer as separate line items.
  6. Review the result against the available can sizes, then round up modestly.

If the calculator and your manual result differ, check perimeter, wall height, opening subtraction and coat count first. A different product rate or a calculator’s built-in two-coat assumption is usually the explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check on the tin before paying?

  • The stated coverage or spread rate in m²/L.
  • The surfaces approved for that product: walls, ceilings, trim or a specific substrate.
  • The recommended number of coats and minimum recoat time.
  • Whether a primer, sealer or preparation coat is required.
  • Any colour or substrate warnings that affect hiding.
  • Available pack sizes in your country and whether the same colour is mixed into more than one base.
  • Batch information and storage guidance if keeping paint for touch-ups.

Coverage figures are estimates under the manufacturer’s conditions. They are not a promise that every wall will consume exactly that amount.

What are the common calculation mistakes?

Using floor area as wall area

Floor area describes the footprint, not the walls. A large ceiling height or long perimeter can produce far more wall area than the floor-area number suggests.

Forgetting the second coat

Dividing one-coat area by the spread rate and then buying that amount leaves no allowance for the specified second coat. Apply the coat multiplier before dividing.

Applying the wall rate to primer

Primer has its own published guide rate—14 m²/L in the cited Dulux Australia 2026 guidance—so use that rate for primer and the topcoat rate for topcoat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subtracting openings twice

Subtract doors and windows once from the gross wall area. If a door is being painted, do not subtract it as an opening and then forget to add its door-paint requirement.

Relying on a room-size shortcut for unusual rooms

Quick estimates for 2 × 2 m and 4 × 4 m rooms assume ordinary proportions and conditions. High ceilings, large windows, alcoves and textured walls require the full measurement method.

Mixing regional figures

A UK quick estimate and an Australian spread-rate guide serve different purposes and markets. Do not combine a regional shortcut with a product label from another country without checking the local instructions.

How can I plan the purchase for future touch-ups?

Record the exact product name, colour name or code, finish, batch information and the areas painted. Keep leftover paint in a sealed container, protected from extreme temperatures, and mark the room and date on the lid. Touch-ups can look different after ageing or when paint has been mixed from another batch, so retaining a small amount of the original product is often more useful than trying to recreate the colour later.

For a multi-room project, calculate each room separately first. You can then identify where the same product and colour are used, but do not pool estimates until every room’s coats, openings and surface condition have been accounted for.

Is the Dulux calculator result guaranteed to be exact?

No. Dulux describes its calculator as a guide, and actual requirements change with surface condition, texture, product range, sheen and colour. The most dependable estimate combines measured areas with the exact local product’s spread rate and coat instructions, then allows a small practical margin.

When the substrate is new, highly porous, heavily textured or undergoing a dramatic colour change, preparation can matter more than fine-tuning the final decimal place. Follow the preparation system on the product instructions and treat the calculated litre figure as a buying baseline.

Quick reference: the complete calculation workflow

  1. Measure: Record every wall width, wall height, ceiling dimension, door and window.
  2. Calculate gross area: Use 2 × (length + width) × height for a rectangle, or add separately measured wall sections.
  3. Subtract openings: Remove only doors and windows that will not receive that wall product.
  4. Choose coats: Follow the selected Dulux product instructions; two topcoats are only the common calculator assumption.
  5. Apply the coat multiplier: Paintable area × coats.
  6. Divide by coverage: Coated area ÷ the exact product’s m²/L spread rate.
  7. Repeat for other surfaces: Calculate ceiling, trim, doors and primer with their own areas and rates.
  8. Round up: Add a modest touch-up allowance and choose the next practical can size available locally.
  9. Verify: Compare the result with the tin, product page and any regional Dulux guidance before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same Dulux coverage rate for every colour and finish?

No. Coverage can vary by product range, sheen, colour and substrate. Treat the m²/L figure on the specific local tin or product page as the controlling value, even when another Dulux product lists a familiar rate.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

What should I do if my room has no straight rectangular walls?

Divide the room into measurable wall planes or rectangles, calculate each plane, and add the paintable areas before applying coats and coverage. For sloped or double-height sections, measure their actual surface rather than substituting the room’s average height.

Is leftover Dulux paint useful after the project?

Yes, a sealed, clearly labelled remainder can simplify future repairs. Keep the product, colour code, finish and room noted; a later mix or aged paint may not match perfectly, so the original remainder is preferable.

Why did my measured amount differ from a shop’s quick estimate?

Quick estimates use typical room proportions and assumptions about openings, coats and product coverage. Your wall height, window area, texture or colour change may differ, so a measured calculation is the better basis for an unusual room.
