To make a smooth night-sky time-lapse, lock a wide, fast lens on a sturdy tripod, focus manually on a star, expose every frame identically, and leave an interval only a few seconds longer than the shutter time. Plan the Milky Way and Moon for your location, shoot enough frames for the final running time, then assemble the stills at your chosen frame rate. The settings below are reliable starting points, not universal answers: sensor performance, light pollution, clouds, moon phase and the look you want all change the result.

1. Plan a scene that can hold attention

Night-sky footage works best when the sky has a visual subject and the ground provides scale. Find a clear, dark location with an interesting foreground—rock, tree, ridge, building or shoreline—that will remain still for the whole capture.

Check the sky for your date and location

  • Use a planning app or astronomy chart to check when and where the Milky Way core will appear.
  • Check Moon phase, rise and set times. Moonlight can reveal a foreground but can also wash out faint stars.
  • Look for a cloud-free forecast and avoid locations where artificial lights point toward your composition.
  • Arrive early enough to frame and focus before darkness makes adjustments difficult.

There is no single “Milky Way season” or universal exposure: visibility depends on latitude, date, direction and local sky brightness.

2. Stabilize and compose before pressing Record

Mount the camera on a sturdy tripod, spread the legs fully and level the head. Compose with the camera exactly where you want it; do not reframe during the sequence. Even a tiny shift becomes a distracting jump when hundreds of frames are played quickly.

  • Quick-release plate helps ensure fast transitions between shots
  • Hang the camera bag only if it does not make the tripod sway in wind.
  • Turn off image stabilization when the camera is firmly mounted, unless your camera maker specifically recommends otherwise.
  • Use a remote release, two-second delay or interval timer so pressing the shutter cannot shake the camera.
  • Keep people, vehicles and light sources from crossing the foreground during the run.

3. Choose the capture style and lens

A wide-angle lens includes more sky and makes apparent star motion easier to see. A fast lens—around f/2.8 or wider is a useful starting point on a dark night—collects more light, although you may stop down slightly if the corners of the frame are soft.

Star points and a moving sky

Use exposures short enough that stars remain points in each frame. NASA’s 500-rule example starts with 500 divided by focal length: a 20 mm lens gives about 25 seconds as a ceiling before trails become noticeable. Treat that as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee; crop factor, resolution and your tolerance for streaking change the practical limit.

Star trails

For deliberate trails, make many shorter exposures and stack them later. Stacking gives you control over trail length and can reduce noise, rather than forcing one extremely long exposure that may overheat the camera or blow out the foreground.

4. Lock every setting manually

Automatic controls are a common cause of flicker. Once the camera is set, exposure, focus and white balance must not change from frame to frame.

  1. Focus: In live view, magnify a bright star or distant light, adjust until it is smallest and sharpest, then switch the lens to manual focus. Tape the focus ring if it can move.
  2. Aperture: Start around f/1.8–f/4. Use the widest practical setting for faint skies; stopping down can improve edge sharpness or tame bright foreground lights.
  3. Shutter: Begin near the 500-rule limit for star points, then shorten it if trails appear or highlights clip.
  4. ISO: ISO 1600–6400 is a starting range cited by Intervalometer.app (2025 crawl), but the right value depends on sensor noise and sky brightness. Raise it only until the histogram shows useful sky detail without excessive clipping.
  5. White balance: Choose a fixed Kelvin value or preset rather than Auto. A consistent color can be refined later when processing RAW files.
  6. File type: RAW preserves the most adjustment latitude. Use the camera’s largest practical resolution and a fully charged battery or external power.

5. Set the interval so frames connect

The interval is measured from the start of one exposure to the start of the next. Leave roughly 2–5 seconds beyond the exposure for the camera to write the file; a slower card or a larger RAW file may need more. Nikon gives a concrete example of a 20-second exposure with a 25–35-second interval.

Look Starting point Purpose
Star points / moving sky Manual focus; shutter near 500 ÷ focal length; interval slightly longer than exposure Limits streaking while maintaining continuous motion
Milky Way visibility Wide lens; approximately f/2.8 or wider; ISO adjusted to sensor and sky Collects more light and frames more of the sky
Star trails Hundreds of shorter exposures at a consistent interval, then stack Controls trail length and limits noise
Stable sequence Tripod, fixed framing and intervalometer Prevents shake and framing jumps

6. Calculate how many frames to shoot

Multiply the finished clip length in seconds by the playback frame rate. A 10-second clip at 25 frames per second needs 250 stills. At a 25-second interval, that many frames takes about 104 minutes, matching the worked example published by BBC Sky at Night Magazine (2019). Longer captures reveal more apparent movement and make clouds or the Milky Way’s rotation more dramatic.

7. Prevent gaps, flicker and accidental movement

Use an interval timer

Use the camera’s built-in interval timer when it can specify interval, number of shots and start delay. An external intervalometer is useful when the camera lacks those controls or when you want to operate without touching the body. Nikon describes the interval function as automatically taking photos at selected intervals to create a silent time-lapse movie.

Disable settings that create missing frames

Turn off long-exposure noise reduction if it inserts a dark frame after every exposure. That extra cycle can double the effective interval and produce visible gaps. If you need dark-frame correction, capture a separate set after the sequence and apply it in post instead, provided your software supports that workflow.

8. Capture a moonlit-foreground version when appropriate

Moonlight can make the landscape readable while keeping stars visible, but it changes the exposure balance. A bright Moon or illuminated foreground may require a lower ISO or shorter shutter than a dark, moonless scene. Decide whether the foreground or faint Milky Way is the priority, then expose for the most important detail without clipping highlights.

9. Assemble and finish the sequence

  1. Copy all stills to a fast local drive and keep the original files unchanged.
  2. Apply one consistent correction to the first frame—white balance, exposure, lens correction and noise reduction—then synchronize it across the set.
  3. Import the numbered stills as an image sequence in your editor. Set each image to one frame and choose the intended frame rate (for example, 25 fps).
  4. Review the clip for exposure jumps, focus changes, vibrations and gaps. Remove only obvious bad frames; deleting many consecutive frames can create a jump.
  5. Export in the delivery resolution and codec required by your destination. Keep a high-quality master so you can create other versions later.

For star trails, use stacking software to blend the exposures, often with a lighten or equivalent mode, rather than treating them as a conventional moving sequence. Stacking preserves uninterrupted arcs and lets you build the desired trail length from many files.

10. Diagnose common failures

Visible flicker

Check that aperture, shutter, ISO and white balance were manual. Aperture blades that stop down inconsistently can also flicker; shoot wide open or use a lens with a dependable electronic aperture and correct the sequence with deflicker software if necessary.

Stars become lines when you wanted points

Shorten the shutter, use a wider focal length or accept the streaking as part of the design. The 500-rule estimate is only a ceiling, and high-resolution cameras often reveal trails sooner.

Gaps or a jerky sky

Increase the interval enough for file writing, disable in-camera long-exposure noise reduction and verify that the timer is set to the interval—not merely the delay before the first shot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Soft or drifting focus

Refocus on a magnified star, switch to manual focus and secure the ring. Temperature changes can move focus during a long night, so inspect a test frame after the camera has acclimated.

Noise or a washed-out sky

Lower ISO, shorten the shutter or move to darker skies. A fast aperture helps collect signal, but it cannot overcome substantial light pollution or cloud.

A practical starting recipe

For a dark, clear night with a 20 mm lens, mount the camera securely, focus manually on a star, try about 20–25 seconds at a wide aperture and ISO somewhere in the 1600–6400 range, then set a 25–35-second interval. Shoot at least 250 frames for a 10-second, 25-fps clip, and adjust after checking a test frame and the histogram. Change one variable at a time so you know which adjustment improved the sequence.
