The easiest way to carve a pumpkin is to choose a firm one that sits steadily, scoop it out, transfer a simple design, and have an adult make slow, controlled cuts. You can open it at the top or bottom; for display, use a battery-operated light or glow stick instead of an open flame.
What you need to carve a pumpkin
- A firm pumpkin with healthy, intact skin and a stable base
- A small serrated pumpkin saw or sturdy serrated knife, used only by an adult
- A large spoon, ice-cream scoop, or pumpkin scraper
- A washable marker, pencil, paper pattern, or stencil
- Newspaper, cardboard, or another covering for the work surface
- A bowl or tray for seeds and stringy pulp
- A battery-operated pumpkin light or glow stick
A basic pumpkin carving kit can combine small serrated saws and a scoop, but it is optional: a household spoon and hand-drawn design work for a simple carving. A kit is not a reason to let children use cutting tools. Check current product and recall information before buying or using a kit. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled Besslly Halloween Pumpkin Carving Kits, model CHD-014-2, on April 9, 2026, because the included tea lights had accessible button-cell batteries. Do not use that recalled model.
1. Choose a pumpkin that will not roll
Look for a pumpkin that feels firm and heavy for its size, with healthy, intact skin and a base that sits securely. Avoid soft spots and mold. A thick-walled pumpkin may block light and make details harder to see, so a simple design is a good choice for a first attempt. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and North Carolina State University Extension both offer pumpkin-selection guidance.
Shape matters less than stability. Set the pumpkin on its flattest side and rotate it until you find a position that works for your design. Carry it by the body, not by the stem: Iowa State Extension cautions that a broken stem can leave a wound associated with decay.

2. Prepare a safe, washable work area
Work on a steady, flat surface with room for the pumpkin and a bowl for seeds and pulp. Clean and dry the pumpkin exterior before cutting. Cover the work surface with newspaper, cardboard, or a wipeable covering.
Keep the pumpkin steady, and keep your hands away from the cutting path. If it moves, stop and reposition it. Never carve while holding the pumpkin in your lap.
Family safety: adults should do the cutting
The CPSC advises: “Leave pumpkin carving to the adults.” Children can help trace a design or scoop with a spoon after sharp tools have been put away, with suitable supervision. Adults should handle every cut; do not assume a small saw, plastic tool, or kit is safe for children.
In a 2022 release, the CPSC estimated an annual average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments over the preceding three years; the agency said 55% were related to pumpkin carving. These are the CPSC’s estimates reported in 2022, not a current annual forecast.
3. Decide where to cut the opening
Either a top lid or a bottom opening can work. Choose based on how you want to reach the inside and set up the display.
| Opening | How it works | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom | Cut an opening in the base for scooping and access to the interior. | Avoids making a top lid; you can place the pumpkin over a battery-operated light. |
| Top | Cut around the stem to make a lid. | Angle the cut so the lid can rest on the opening rather than dropping through. |
Bottom opening
Turn the pumpkin carefully on its side and mark an opening large enough to scoop through. Have an adult cut around it with slow, controlled strokes. Do not make the opening so large that the pumpkin loses support.

Mark a circle or square around the stem. Have an adult cut inward at an angle so the lid can rest on the opening. Make the opening large enough to reach inside with a scoop.

Use a spoon, ice-cream scoop, or pumpkin scraper to remove seeds and stringy pulp. Scrape the inside, especially behind the planned design, to make that area easier to cut and let more light through. The wall thickness that works depends on the pumpkin and design, so do not scrape until the shell is weak.
Can you eat the seeds?
You can separate seeds from the pulp and use a tested roasting method if the pumpkin and seeds have not been treated with non-food substances. Keep fresh-cut food refrigerated; Iowa State Extension advises wrapping cut fresh pumpkin tightly, refrigerating it, and using it within five days. Do not eat seeds from a display pumpkin treated with a non-food preservation product.
5. Transfer a simple design
Beginners usually find large, open shapes easier to transfer and cut than intricate details. A simple face with broad features and generous spaces between cutouts is a good starting point. Choose a design that matches your experience and leaves enough pumpkin between shapes to support the shell.
Freehand drawing
Use a washable marker or pencil to draw directly on the pumpkin. A simple design does not need to be perfectly symmetrical.
Paper pattern or stencil
- Draw or print a design roughly the size of the pumpkin’s front.
- Tape the paper to the curved surface.
- Mark along the design lines with small punctures using a pencil or another blunt tool.
- Remove the paper and connect the marks with a washable marker.
- Check that the cutouts have enough space between them to keep the shell strong.
A stencil or pattern can make design transfer easier, but a hand-drawn design works well for a first attempt.

6. Carve with slow, controlled strokes
Have an adult do all cutting, with the pumpkin on a stable surface. Use a small serrated pumpkin saw or sturdy serrated knife and gentle, short sawing strokes. Do not force the blade through the shell.
- Start with smaller or central features, leaving room to work around them.
- Keep the supporting hand out of the blade’s path.
- For large sections, make several smaller cuts rather than trying to remove one large piece.
- Gently push each finished piece through the shell instead of twisting or prying forcefully.
- Stop if the pumpkin shifts, the blade binds, or you need to use force.
For a softer glow, an adult can use a suitable tool to remove only the outer skin in selected areas, leaving inner flesh intact. This takes patience and careful control.
Beginner-friendly design alternatives
Punched patterns
Dots, stars, or repeated holes can create a patterned glow. Any cutting or forceful use of a tool should be done by an adult. Avoid forcing a tool into the curved shell, which can crack the pumpkin.

Use ridges, scars, and unusual contours as part of the expression. This can reduce the need for a perfectly symmetrical drawing.
Layered glow
Combine a few through-cut shapes with areas where only the outer skin is removed. Leave generous bridges between neighboring shapes so the pumpkin stays supported.
7. Light the pumpkin safely
The CPSC recommends battery-operated lights or glow sticks rather than an open-flame candle. Check that a battery compartment is closed securely and keep loose button batteries away from children. Check current recall information before using a bundled light.

How to help a carved pumpkin last longer
Carved pumpkins dry and shrivel after exposure to air, and their display life varies with the pumpkin and conditions. Iowa State Extension says a carved pumpkin can keep for a few days in the refrigerator; for display, keep it in a cool spot out of direct sunlight. These steps may slow deterioration, but they do not guarantee a particular outdoor lifespan.
- Carve close to when you plan to display the pumpkin.
- Keep it cool and out of direct sunlight when displaying it.
- Refrigerate it for a few days if it is carved ahead of time and there is room.
- Discard it if it becomes soft, moldy, or otherwise spoiled.
Common carving problems and fixes
The pumpkin keeps moving
Stop cutting and reposition it on its flattest base. Never compensate for movement by pressing harder with the blade.
A cut piece will not come out
Have the adult check whether the cut goes all the way through, then enlarge it slightly with short, gentle sawing motions. Divide a large section into smaller pieces rather than twisting it forcefully.
The design looks crowded
Remove or combine small details before cutting. Enlarge the main shapes and leave wider spaces between them. Simpler designs require less precision.

Scrape a little more flesh from the inside behind the design, stopping before the shell becomes weak. Thick walls can block light, so a simpler design may also help.

The pumpkin starts to soften
Move it to a cool spot out of direct sunlight. If it becomes substantially soft, moldy, or spoiled, discard it rather than trying to preserve it for display.

FAQ
Can children carve a pumpkin?
Children can help trace the design or scoop with a spoon after sharp tools have been put away. Adults should handle all knives, pumpkin saws, and other cutting or forceful tools.
Is it better to cut a pumpkin from the top or bottom?
Either opening can work. A bottom opening avoids a top lid and can make it easy to place the pumpkin over a light. If you cut a top lid, angle the cut so the lid can rest on the opening.
What is the easiest way to hollow out a pumpkin?
Use a large spoon, ice-cream scoop, or pumpkin scraper to remove seeds and stringy pulp. Scrape behind the design to make cutting easier, but stop before the shell becomes weak.
What is the safest light for a jack-o’-lantern?
A battery-operated light or glow stick avoids an open flame. The CPSC recommends these instead of candles. If you use a candle, keep it away from combustible materials and never leave it unattended.
How do you keep a carved pumpkin from rotting?
Carve close to display time, keep the pumpkin cool and out of direct sunlight, and refrigerate it for a few days if carved ahead. These steps may slow drying and shriveling but cannot guarantee a fixed display life.
Can you roast seeds from a carving pumpkin?
Seeds may be used if they have not been treated with non-food substances. Separate them from the pulp and use a tested roasting method. Iowa State Extension advises refrigerating cut fresh pumpkin, tightly wrapped, and using it within five days.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
For a low-stress first carving, choose a firm, stable pumpkin, scoop it thoroughly, transfer a simple design, and have an adult make slow, controlled cuts. Either a top or bottom opening can work; a battery-operated light or glow stick is the safer display choice.
