Which Is Better for Fish Tanks: Blue or Black Paint?

There is no universally better blue or black background for every fish tank: research findings vary by species and by what was measured. Black is a reasonable starting point if you want a dark backdrop, while blue may suit particular species or visual goals; a removable background film lets you change your choice without applying paint.

Here, “paint” can mean the background color rather than a coating on the tank. Do not put paint inside an occupied aquarium. For a practical, reversible option, use background film intended for aquarium use and observe the fish after changing their surroundings.

Key takeaways

  • No blue-or-black rule applies to every aquarium fish. Results differ across species and measures such as preference, aggression, cortisol, growth, and feed intake.
  • In one adult laboratory zebrafish study, mean trunk cortisol was reported as 3- to 8-fold greater with bright green and white backgrounds than with black backgrounds or transparent aquaria. This is a finding from that experiment, not a general rule for home aquariums.
  • A Coho salmon experiment reported a preference for black over tested alternatives, including blue, and less aggression in darker environments under its conditions.
  • Other evidence supports blue in specific contexts, and other species have shown different outcomes. Study results should not be generalized across fish.
  • Background color is only one part of aquarium care; it does not replace suitable water quality, cover, lighting, stocking, or species-specific care.

How do blue and black backgrounds compare?

Choose based on the fish, the tank’s appearance, and your own viewing preference—not on a claim that one color is best for all fish. The visual descriptions below are keeper-facing considerations; the research does not establish them as welfare benefits for every home aquarium.

Consideration Blue Black
Appearance May create a brighter or open-water look, depending on the setup. Provides a dark backdrop and is a reasonable starting choice for that look.
Fish response Some species-specific evidence supports blue for particular measured outcomes. Some species-specific evidence supports dark or black backgrounds for particular outcomes.
Evidence limitation Results from one species or measure do not establish a general preference. Results from one species or measure do not establish a general preference.
Practical choice A removable film can be changed if the result does not suit the tank. A removable film can be changed if the result does not suit the tank.

What does research say about black backgrounds?

Research supports considering a dark background, but not assuming it benefits every fish. Pavlidis and colleagues’ 2013 adult zebrafish husbandry study reported 3- to 8-fold greater mean trunk cortisol in fish exposed to bright green and white backgrounds than in fish exposed to black backgrounds or transparent aquaria. The authors’ findings concern adult laboratory zebrafish in the tested setting. Read the zebrafish husbandry study record.

Barrett and colleagues’ 2016 Coho salmon experiment assigned 100 fish to 10 tanks and compared background preferences and aggression. The authors reported that the salmon preferred black over tested alternatives, including industry-standard blue, and were less aggressive in darker environments under the experiment’s conditions. These results concern Coho salmon, not all aquarium fish. See the Coho salmon study.

Other findings caution against a universal conclusion. Gilham and Baker’s 1985 research on trout and eels reported stronger cortisol increases in trout adapted to black tanks in response to certain stressors; it compared black with white, not blue. A 2023 Nile tilapia study reported lower weight gain in the black-background group than in the uncovered control. These are different species, setups, and outcomes. See the trout and eel study record and the Nile tilapia study record.

Can a blue background be a good choice?

Yes. A 2020 zebrafish study’s indexed summary reports lower anxiety-like behavior in black or blue holding tanks than in transparent or white tanks, and lower cortisol for blue compared with white. That supports blue as a plausible choice in that study; it does not settle a universal blue-versus-black choice. See the 2020 zebrafish study record.

Responses can differ by species and outcome. A public-aquarium welfare review reports higher growth and feed intake for juvenile turbot under blue and white backgrounds than under black, red, or brown. A six-week barramundi study found no specific liver or intestinal alterations relative to background color during that study. These results illustrate variation; they do not prescribe a color for every home aquarium. Read the fish welfare review and the barramundi study record.

How should you choose and change a background?

  1. Consider the species you keep and the goal of the change. Research on other species cannot determine the best background for yours.
  2. Choose a removable background film intended for aquarium use so you can reverse the choice.
  3. Install it outside the tank and follow the product’s instructions. Do not put paint or an unverified material inside an occupied aquarium.
  4. View the tank in its normal setting and decide whether the result suits your fish and display.
  5. Observe the fish after the change. If you notice a concerning change in behavior, consider the full environment and seek species-specific husbandry guidance rather than assuming background color is the only cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a black background stress fish?

Not universally. Studies report different results across species and conditions: Coho salmon preferred black over tested alternatives and were less aggressive in darker environments, while other research has reported different stress responses in trout. These findings do not establish a rule for all aquarium fish.

Is blue better than black for every fish tank?

No. A zebrafish study reported favorable outcomes for blue or black on particular measures, while other species-specific studies found different results. Choose with the needs of your species in mind.
