To make a zine, choose a subject, plan a few pages, create them by hand or digitally, then fold, bind, copy, and share the result. The easiest first project is a one-sheet folded mini-zine: it needs little more than paper and scissors. A zine is self-published and self-created, but it has no fixed size, style, or subject; the Library of Congress notes that the form resists a single definition (Library of Congress).
1. Choose a subject you want to make yours
A zine can hold a personal story, a how-to, a recipe, artwork, a comic, poetry, or a point of view. It can combine writing and images, or use collage, stamps, or even no words at all. The National Library of New Zealand workbook gives examples such as personal stories, political writing, recipes, and how-to writing (National Library of New Zealand).
For a first zine, narrow the idea to something you can explore in a handful of pages: one recipe, one small memory, a short illustrated guide, or a few poems around a theme. You do not need to cover a whole subject; the zine can be a snapshot or an experiment.

2. Pick a format that fits the project
| Format | Best for | Layout and assembly |
|---|---|---|
| One-sheet folded mini-zine | A quick first project with little equipment | Arrange content on one sheet, fold it into pages, and cut where needed. A single copy can be the finished original. |
| Multi-page booklet | A longer sequence of writing, images, or mixed media | Plan separate pages, then fold and staple or sew them together. BMCC’s Zine Library guide describes a stapled booklet approach (BMCC Zine Library). |
A booklet’s page count should be divisible by four, including the front and back covers, according to the BMCC guide. That is because folded sheets create groups of pages; sketching the sequence first helps avoid a confusing layout.
3. Plan the page sequence before making final pages
Decide the finished size, layout method, title, cover, and page count. Then number a blank dummy or make small sketches of what goes on each page. For a folded mini-zine, check a folding template before placing text or illustrations: the panels may not read in the order you expect when the sheet is unfolded.

You can work entirely by hand, use computer layout, or combine the two. A simple plan might reserve the cover for a title and image, use the middle pages for the main idea, and end with a closing image, note, or credits. Leave breathing room so that small pages remain legible.
4. Make the pages with accessible materials
Plain photocopy paper is enough to begin; special paper or a kit is not required. The Library of Congress workshop plan lists paper, pens, scissors, glue sticks, collage materials, photocopying, and optional binding tools as supplies (Library of Congress workshop plan).
- Draw or write: Use pens or markers for text, sketches, diagrams, or comics.
- Collage: Cut and layer images or words, then attach them with a glue stick.
- Stamp or experiment: Repeated marks can create patterns or a visual rhythm across pages.
- Go digital: Lay out pages on a computer, print them, and assemble the sheets.
If the finished zine will be small or photocopied, make writing and important details large and high-contrast. The New Zealand workbook cautions that light pencil may not reproduce clearly, so use dark marks for anything readers must see.

For pages that will be photocopied, leave about 1/4 inch around the edges so a copier is less likely to trim text or artwork, as the Library of Congress pamphlet advises (Library of Congress educational pamphlet). Make one test copy and fold it before producing more; this practical check catches page-order, margin, and cutting problems while they are still easy to fix.

Fold a one-sheet mini-zine
- Use a sheet of paper and mark the page panels according to the fold pattern you plan to use.
- Fold the sheet, then make a test version with numbered panels so you can verify reading order.
- Unfold it and place the final text and art in the corresponding panels, keeping essential content away from edges and folds.
- Fold and cut as needed for the chosen pattern, then check the finished sequence from cover to last page.
Make a booklet
- Arrange pages in the order they should be read and check that the total, including both covers, is divisible by four.
- Fold the pages together and test the booklet before copying a batch.
- Staple along the fold, or sew the fold with needle and thread. The Library of Congress educational pamphlet puts the simple option plainly: “All you need is paper, needle, and thread for a great book.”
You can make one original, photocopy pages at home, or ask a copy shop about producing multiple copies. The best route depends on how many copies you want and whether your layout needs reliable reproduction; keep the original pages or file so you can correct and copy them again.
6. Share it in a way that suits you
Start with people likely to enjoy the subject: trade copies with friends, organize a reading, or ask a local library whether it accepts zines for a display or collection. For broader circulation, explore independent bookstores and zine distributors. These are options rather than guaranteed outlets, so check each organization’s submission or donation process first.

If you distribute widely, avoid printing your home address in the zine. The Library of Congress workshop guidance specifically cautions against publishing a home address when distributing broadly.
