Cuttlebone casting makes a one-off metal object by pouring molten metal into a cavity carved or pressed into the soft inner surface of a cuttlefish’s internal shell. Prepare two matching halves, shape the cavity, cut an entry sprue and air vents, secure the mold, and pour only with appropriate equipment and qualified supervision. The method is suited to small jewelry and sculptural forms; it is not a shortcut to repeatable production or a substitute for foundry safety training.
What cuttlebone casting is good for
The soft, layered interior of cuttlebone can serve as a mold for an individual casting. You can carve a negative shape directly into it, or press a hard pattern into the prepared surface. Its natural texture may transfer to the metal, making it useful as a deliberate surface effect rather than something that must always be polished away. A two-part mold suits many simple shapes; a three-part mold can accommodate more complex forms.
Scale and design matter. The bone’s dimensions and thickness set practical limits, while thin filigree and fine sections can be difficult to fill by gravity alone. A smooth, uniformly finished result may take more cleanup and can make casting flaws more apparent.

Materials and tools
Cuttlebone is the mold material. A workshop notice lists a saw, files, drill, emery paper and wire wool for preparation and finishing; these are examples of tool categories, not product recommendations. Documented casting examples include sterling silver, bronze and lead-free pewter, but the available sources do not establish that every metal or alloy is suitable for this method.
In her 2019 paper, Margaretha Held describes cuttlebone as predominantly calcium carbonate in aragonite crystal form, supported by collagen and minor components. The paper gives composition ranges of 80–85% calcium carbonate and 10–15% collagen proteins. Held’s silver examples used a ceramic crucible and propane melting torch; that description is not a complete equipment list or a beginner setup guide.

How to prepare a two-part cuttlebone mold
- Choose and inspect the bone. Check that the intended object fits within its available length and depth. Held advises avoiding cracked or completely dried bone and leaving at least 7 mm of material around the model in her method. That is her practical recommendation, not a universal dimension for every mold.
- Split and flatten the halves. Cut the bone into two pieces, then abrade the soft inner faces until they meet closely. Held describes rubbing the halves together and checking the seam for gaps that let light through.
- Form the cavity and alignment features. Carve the negative shape into the bone, or press a suitable hard pattern into the prepared surface. Add matching keys or notches so the halves register in the same position when reassembled. Pressure molding is most suitable for simple patterns that fit the material; carving gives you more freedom to create a shape without a separate model.
- Cut the sprue and vents. The sprue is the channel that carries molten metal into the cavity. Vents give displaced air a way out as the cavity fills. Their number, size and placement depend on the shape; poor gating or venting can contribute to an incomplete fill. Clear the channels without damaging the cavity or mold seam.
- Clear dust and secure the mold. Remove loose bone particles, align the halves and bind them firmly with suitable wire or another method taught by an experienced instructor. The halves need to remain aligned during the pour.
- Pour only in a properly equipped, supervised setting. Use a metal, melting equipment and safety procedure appropriate to the casting setup. Allow the casting and mold to cool before opening. Remove the casting and finish it as needed by cutting away the sprue, filing and polishing.
Plan for texture, defects and cleanup
The cuttlebone’s layered structure can leave a characteristic texture on the casting. You can treat it as part of the design or remove more of it during finishing, depending on the desired surface. The mold’s condition and preparation also affect results: a poor seam, loose particles, or ineffective sprue and vents can interfere with the pour.
Held identifies porosity and oxidation as significant concerns and reports that excessively hot metal can intensify them. The practical sources do not provide a universal temperature or a reliable recipe for preventing these defects. Metal choice, mold geometry and casting setup all matter, so do not treat one example as a formula for every alloy or object.

Safety before you try it
Molten metal can cause severe burns, and the process also involves tools and airborne bone dust. Springwood Community Arts Centre’s 2022 workshop guidance advises people with shellfish or crustacean allergies to avoid the activity because of contact with cuttlefish bone and dust. It also calls for a dust mask while working the bone, closed shoes and tied-back long hair. Those workshop notes are minimum cautions, not a complete risk assessment for a particular metal, fuel, tool or workspace.
If you have not cast metal before, learn in a properly equipped, supervised setting and follow current local safety guidance. Do not infer a complete safety procedure from a mold-making description or an equipment example.

A method with a long documented history
Held’s 2019 paper discusses cuttlebone-cast silver buckles from the Bopfingen burial ground in Germany, dating the burial complex to the first quarter of the sixth century through the middle of the seventh. The paper also reports fifteenth-century Florence trade lists that mention cuttlebones transported to Germany for jewelry casting. These examples show that the technique has a long history; they do not establish when or where it was first used.
