In Paint, remove the existing background to create a cutout, then use layers to place a new image or color behind the subject. Microsoft documents Paint’s background removal and layer support, but the exact controls can vary by app version. For a direct solid-color replacement, Windows Photos has a documented Replace workflow.

How to change an image background in Paint

  1. Open the picture. Open or paste the image into Paint and look for the background-removal control.
  2. Remove the existing background. Use Paint’s background-removal feature to create a cutout. Microsoft says it can be applied to the whole image or to a region selected with the selection tool.
  3. Open Layers. Paint supports layers and transparency, which let you stack image elements.
  4. Add the replacement behind the subject. Add or import a background element and arrange it below the cutout. The exact controls for adding, ordering, and filling layers may vary by Paint build.
  5. Check the result. Review the edges and composition. Automatic background removal may need adjustment for your particular image.
  6. Save and verify. Choose a format and confirm the saved image looks as intended. If you need a transparent cutout, verify that transparency is preserved in the format you choose.

Use Photos for a direct solid-color replacement

If you want a flat color rather than another image, Microsoft Photos documents a direct background replacement workflow. Open the image’s background controls, refine the selection with Add mask or Remove mask if needed, choose Replace, select a palette color or enter RGB values, then apply the change. These are Photos controls, not Paint controls.

Paint or Photos: which should you use?

Your goal Approach
Put another image behind a cutout or work with stacked image elements Use Paint’s background removal and layers; arrange the replacement behind the subject.
Replace the background with a solid color directly Use the documented Windows Photos Replace workflow, which offers palette colors and RGB entry.
Create a transparent cutout for use elsewhere Use Paint’s background removal and transparency support, then verify the chosen save format preserves transparency.

If background removal or Layers is missing

Paint features depend on the installed app version and rollout, so the controls may not appear in every installation. Check Microsoft Store for Paint updates, then reopen the app and look for the relevant toolbar control. Microsoft’s Click to Do support guidance also advises installing the latest app version when Paint actions are unavailable; Click to Do is a separate entry point and may depend on device eligibility.
