The right circular polarizer (CPL) is the one that fits your lens and gives you useful control over reflections in the scene. Match its diameter to your lens’s filter thread, then rotate the filter while viewing the image to choose the effect. No single model is established here as an objectively best choice, so the practical decision is about compatibility, handling and the conditions in which you shoot.
What a circular polarizer does
A CPL is a rotating filter that lets you adjust which polarized light reaches the camera. It can reduce reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water and glass, and can change the appearance of foliage and sky when the light and camera angle are suitable. The result varies with the scene; a CPL is a creative control, not a guarantee that glare will disappear or a sky will look better. Hoya describes glare control, while Nikon discusses effects on reflective surfaces including water and glass.

What to check before buying
Match the filter-thread diameter
Find the filter-thread diameter on the lens, often marked with a diameter symbol and a number, or check the lens manual. Buy a filter with the same diameter. FUJIFILM advises preparing a filter with the matching diameter; a filter that does not fit cannot be mounted directly. See FUJIFILM’s accessory guidance.
If you use several lenses, a larger shared filter with step-up rings may be an option, but confirm the rings fit each lens and that the setup does not cause vignetting or interfere with a hood or cap. Do not assume one size will work across your kit without checking the actual lenses.
#1 Best Overall
- Enhance Color & Contrast: CPL filter can enhance the color and contrast, and remove non-metallic reflections such as water, and glass to show the true color, especially used in white cloud and blue sky photography.
- Multi-Coated & Cleaning Cloth: 18 multi-layer coating reduces reflection, and glare and improves color saturation and contrast. The vacuumed cleaning cloth for the camera lens and filter cleaning is harmless for the equipment.
- Imported AGC Glass Avoids Glares: Made by Japanese imported AGC glass, no effect on the image color, and restores the natural color.
- Ultra-Slim Frame Avoid Vignetting: Only 5.3mm thickness frame, there is no vignetting even on wide-angle and telephoto lenses, and the CNC-non slip frame helps install and remove the filter easily.
- NOTE: This filter is compatible with all 58mm lenses. Please verify your camera's lens thread size before ordering. This number is beside a "ø" (diameter) symbol.
Choose circular for autofocus and metering systems
For a general-purpose choice on a modern autofocus camera, choose a circular rather than a linear polarizer unless your camera maker specifies otherwise. B+W describes its circular filters as suitable for autofocus and light-metering cameras. Nikon explains that a linear polarizer can interfere with autofocus detection in some camera designs that use a beam splitter. B+W polarizing-filter guidance; Nikon’s explanation.
Consider profile, transmission and handling
- Frame profile: A slim frame can help reduce the risk of vignetting on a wide-angle lens. Check the specific lens and whether the slim frame changes how a hood or cap fits. B+W notes use across wide-angle to telephoto lenses, but compatibility still depends on the particular setup. B+W guidance.
- Light loss: Every polarizer reduces the light reaching the camera, so exposure may need adjustment. A high-transmission design aims to reduce that loss, but the available manufacturer information does not provide comparable measured transmission figures across brands.
- Coating and ring construction: These can affect handling, cleaning and flare, but the available manufacturer information does not establish a controlled cross-brand winner.
- Rotation: The front ring should turn smoothly enough for you to adjust the effect while looking at the actual scene.
How to use a CPL in the field
- Compose the scene and look through the viewfinder or at the rear display.
- Rotate the front ring slowly while watching reflections and changes to the sky or foliage.
- Stop at the effect you want. Complete reflection removal may not be possible or desirable; preserve some reflection if it better suits the photograph.
- Check exposure after fitting the filter. Adjust shutter speed, aperture or ISO as the scene requires.
Pay attention to the sun and your field of view
The effect is generally strongest when you photograph at about a right angle to the sun. B+W / Schneider Kreuznach states: “The maximum polarization effect is achieved in landscape photography when shooting at an angle of 90° to the sun.” B+W / Schneider Kreuznach.
Rank #2
- Circular polarizer--one of the most popular special-effect filters
- Deepens the intensity of blue skies; reduces or eliminates glare
- Multi-coating reduces reflection
- Ideal for outdoor photography; for use with auto-focus and non-auto-focus cameras
- This filter is made for 58mm camera lenses, please verify the lens thread size of your camera (marked with the "Φ" symbol) before placing an order.
A very wide view can include parts of the sky at different angles to the sun, which may produce uneven darkening. Rotate the filter while viewing the whole composition rather than expecting a uniformly deep blue sky.
What a CPL cannot do
- It does not remove every reflection. Its reflection-control effect applies to polarized reflections from non-metallic surfaces; do not expect the same effect on metal.
- It does not guarantee more saturated foliage or a more attractive sky. The result depends on lighting, camera direction and the subject.
- It does not avoid an exposure cost. Review the exposure after attaching it, particularly if you are working handheld in low light.
Examples, not a ranked winner
The Heliopan 58 mm Slim High Transmission Circular Polarizer SH-PMC is one example of a product described by its maker as suitable for available-light and handheld photography because of lower light loss. Its 58 mm size fits only lenses with a matching thread, or a compatible adapter arrangement. The maker’s qualitative description is not a comparable measured performance result.
