Choose a 5-gallon bucket with a hanging or built-in roller grid for large, multi-gallon work, where stability and fewer refills matter. Choose a 9-inch paint tray for a small room, short session, or frequent color changes because it is easier to carry and clean. Then match the roller cover to the wall: 3/8- to 1/2-inch nap for smooth or semi-smooth surfaces, and 1/2-inch or longer for medium-to-rough texture.
The right setup is less about a brand than about capacity, compatibility, texture and how you work. A properly loaded roller should be saturated without dripping; overlapping passes across a wet edge—not a particular bucket or tray—are what prevent lap marks.

Use the project’s paint volume and working conditions as the first decision. A bucket-and-grid system is generally the better choice for broad walls, ceilings and multi-gallon jobs. A tray is usually more convenient for one small room, a short repair session or work that requires frequent color changes.
| Consideration | 5-gallon bucket with roller grid | 9-inch paint tray |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Large areas and multi-gallon projects | Small rooms and short sessions |
| Paint handling | Holds a large working supply and can accommodate paint combined from multiple gallons | Working reservoir that is easier to carry and empty |
| Roller support | Use a grid sized for the bucket; dual roll-off grids provide two loading surfaces | Use a tray with a patterned roll-off surface sized for the roller |
| Stability | Harder to tip than a pan, according to contractor Jim Clark as quoted by This Old House | Light and portable, but easier to knock over if placed where it can be kicked or caught by a ladder |
| Refilling | Fewer refills on a large wall | More frequent refills on a large project |
| Cleanup and color changes | Use a compatible liner when changing colors or minimizing washing | Easy to carry away and clean between colors; a liner can simplify disposal |
Choose a bucket when the job is large or elevated
Behr’s painting guides list a bucket and bucket grid among standard supplies and specifically suggest a 5-gallon bucket and grid for larger areas. The larger reservoir keeps you from repeatedly climbing down to refill, while the grid lets you remove excess paint before the roller reaches the wall. A bucket is also less likely to tip when you are working beside a ladder or using an extension pole.

Choose a tray when portability matters more than capacity
A 9-inch tray is easier to move around a small room and simpler to empty when you stop for the day. It is also practical when you are switching between colors or coatings and do not want a large container of paint sitting open. The trade-off is a smaller reservoir and more refilling on expansive surfaces.
How much paint should the container hold?
Match capacity to the amount you can use during one working session, not simply to the size printed on the container. A container that is too large for a short job adds weight and makes cleanup harder; one that is too small for a large job creates interruptions and increases the chance of a dry roller.
What a 5-gallon bucket provides
A 5-gallon bucket is the standard large-job format described in the Behr guides and in the US Sherwin-Williams catalog listing for a dual roll-off bucket. That listing describes level markings, a pour spout, a strengthened handle and a dual roll-off grid. The extra room can also let you combine two gallons of the same color before painting. Jim Clark told This Old House that mixing gallons together can minimize color discrepancies between cans.
Do not fill the bucket to its rim. Leave enough headroom to dip the roller without sloshing, and keep the grid seated or hanging securely so paint drains back into the bucket.
How to use a 1-gallon tray
The Purdy NEST 9-inch tray is a 1-gallon polypropylene tray with a patterned roll-off surface, pour spout and a rest for a brush or mini-roller. Purdy’s loading guidance says a tray should be no more than one-third full. That level gives the roller room to enter the paint while leaving a broad ramp for removing excess.
Pour only the amount you expect to use soon. A shallow working supply is easier to manage than a full tray, and you can add more paint as needed without carrying a heavy, unstable pan.

What roller-grid and tray features should you look for?
The container and the roller cover must work together. Before buying, confirm the grid or tray is intended for your roller width and that the grid actually fits the bucket opening.
Grid fit and roll-off area
A hanging grid should sit firmly against the bucket wall and provide enough surface for several complete roller passes. A built-in or dual roll-off grid keeps the roller from contacting a loose screen that can shift while you load. If you use more than one roller width, check that each cover can roll across the available grid without striking the bucket rim.
Pour spout and level markings
A pour spout helps transfer leftover paint without scraping it over the side. Level markings make it easier to judge how much paint remains and to combine batches consistently. These features are specified on the listed dual roll-off bucket; do not assume every 5-gallon pail includes them.
Handles, rests and liners
A strengthened handle is useful when a bucket is full. On a tray, a brush or mini-roller rest keeps a tool from lying in the paint between sections. Liners are most useful when you change colors, stop before the container is empty or want to avoid washing a large vessel immediately.

Which roller nap works on my wall?
Nap is the thickness of the roller cover’s fibers. It controls how much paint the cover carries and how well it reaches into texture. More nap is not automatically better: on a smooth wall it can leave an unnecessarily stippled finish and use more paint.

| Surface | Starting nap range | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth or semi-smooth drywall, plaster or previously painted walls | 3/8 to 1/2 inch | Provides a controlled film without excessive texture |
| Medium-to-rough walls and textured surfaces | 1/2 inch or longer | Reaches recesses that a short nap may leave thin or uncovered |
Use a lint-free cover
High-quality, lint-free covers reduce loose fibers becoming trapped in the finish. Inspect a new cover before loading it; remove obvious loose fibers rather than allowing them to dry into the paint. Keep the cover matched to the coating and surface, because a good nap cannot compensate for a roller that sheds.
Match roller width to the container
A 9-inch roller is a natural fit for a 9-inch tray, while a bucket grid can support wider or narrower rollers if the grid has enough roll-off area. Wider rollers can cover more wall per pass but are heavier when saturated. Choose the widest cover you can control comfortably, especially when working from a ladder or extension pole.
How do you load a roller without drips?
Loading is a controlled cycle of dipping and rolling off. The target is a uniformly wet nap that does not release drops when you lift it.
- Prepare the container. Pour paint into the tray to no more than one-third full, or place the grid securely in the bucket. Stir the paint according to its label before pouring.
- Dip partially. Place only part of the roller nap into the paint. Submerging the entire frame or filling the end caps adds weight and encourages splatter.
- Roll off excess. Run the roller across the tray’s patterned ramp or the bucket grid several times. Use even pressure so the paint spreads through the nap instead of pooling at one edge.
- Check the ends. Look for a bead of paint forming at either end of the cover. If you see one, make another light pass on the grid or ramp.
- Lift and test. Hold the roller over the container for a moment. It should be loaded but not dripping; a drip means you need another roll-off pass.
- Reload before it runs dry. A nearly dry roller requires extra pressure and can produce thin spots and lap marks. Return to the container while the cover still feels evenly damp.
Purdy’s guidance emphasizes this same sequence: dip partially, roll against the grid or tray several times, and stop when the nap is saturated without drips.
How should you roll the wall to avoid lap marks?
Work in sections small enough to keep a wet edge. Lap marks occur when a fresh pass overlaps paint that has begun to set, or when one part of the wall receives more pressure and paint than another.
Cut in manageable sections
Home Depot’s instructions recommend cutting in 3- to 4-foot segments rather than edging the entire room before rolling. Brush the perimeter of one segment, then roll that area while the edge is still wet. Continue around the room so each rolled section can blend into the next.

Use a 3-by-3-foot W pattern
For each section, Home Depot recommends a 3-by-3-foot W pattern. Lay the paint onto the wall with the W, then fill the open areas with parallel passes. Keep the roller moving smoothly and avoid stopping with one edge heavily loaded.
Overlap while the paint is wet
Purdy recommends overlapping strokes and avoiding a dry roller. Blend each pass into the previous one with light, consistent pressure. If a section begins to dry, do not scrub it repeatedly; reload the roller and move on, then correct the transition while the surrounding paint is still workable.
Keep pressure consistent
Let the roller’s nap and the paint do the work. Pressing hard can squeeze paint from the cover and leave a thin band at the edge; barely touching the wall can leave holidays. A steady pace and full, overlapping passes produce a more even film than trying to force coverage from a nearly empty roller.
Which setup is safer on a ladder or with an extension pole?
A bucket with a secure hanging grid is generally more stable than an open pan, a point Jim Clark makes in his advice quoted by This Old House. Stability still depends on placement: keep the bucket or tray on a level, reachable surface and avoid setting it where a ladder leg or extension pole can catch it.
A full bucket is heavy. If you must climb, carry only a manageable amount and use the handle as designed; do not balance a container on a ladder step. With an extension pole, test the roller’s weight before starting and reload before the cover becomes dry enough to require forceful pressure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do cleanup and color changes affect the choice?
Choose a tray when you expect to change colors often or want the smallest cleanup area. Its one-gallon format can be emptied quickly, and a disposable or washable liner can keep the patterned surface usable between colors.

Choose a bucket when the project uses a large quantity of one color. A compatible liner can reduce washing and make a color change more predictable. If you are combining paint, combine only cans that are the same color and coating; mixing unrelated products can change the finish and is not supported by the container guidance.
At the end of a session, scrape excess paint back into the original container or an appropriately labeled container before cleaning. Keep the grid or tray free of dried ridges, because hardened paint changes how evenly the roller loads during the next session.

What mistakes cause drips, thin spots or uneven texture?
- Overfilling the tray: Keep the working level at or below one-third full so the roller can roll off cleanly.
- Using the wrong nap: A short nap may skip the valleys of a textured wall; an overly long nap can exaggerate stipple on a smooth surface.
- Skipping the grid: A wet roller straight from the paint carries excess that can drip down the wall. Roll it out several times first.
- Allowing the roller to dry: Reload before the cover requires pressure. A dry roller is more likely to create lap marks and thin bands.
- Working an area after it starts setting: Maintain a wet edge and overlap adjacent passes while the paint remains workable.
- Using an incompatible liner: A liner that does not match the bucket or tray can shift, expose gaps and interfere with the grid or roll-off surface.
- Ignoring loose fibers: Choose lint-free covers and remove visible loose fibers before loading.
- Carrying too much paint: A full bucket may be stable on the floor but unwieldy to lift. Transfer a manageable amount for elevated work.
What should you check before buying?
- Estimate whether the project is a small-room session or a multi-gallon job.
- Choose a 9-inch tray for portability, or a 5-gallon bucket and grid when fewer refills and greater stability matter.
- Verify that the grid, tray and liner match the roller width and container dimensions.
- Select a 3/8- to 1/2-inch nap for smooth or semi-smooth surfaces, and at least a 1/2-inch nap for medium-to-rough texture.
- Prefer lint-free covers and a roll-off surface that lets you remove excess paint without splatter.
- Plan for the way you will work: ladder or extension-pole use favors a stable setup, while frequent color changes favor a portable, easy-to-clean tray.
- Buy only the capacity you can safely handle; a larger container is not automatically the better tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any roller grid be used with any 5-gallon bucket?
No. Grid dimensions and attachment points vary, so the grid must be designed for the bucket opening. Check the bucket and grid as a compatible system before filling it.
Is a longer nap always better for textured paintwork?
No. Longer fibers help reach deeper texture, but excessive nap can leave an unwanted pattern on less-textured areas. Start with the shortest nap that fully reaches the surface profile and adjust only if coverage is incomplete.

Should I pour paint directly from the can into the tray or bucket?
Use the container’s pour spout when it has one, because it guides the stream and limits paint running down the side. Level markings can also help you judge how much paint you have transferred or combined.
How can I tell whether a roller is loaded enough before touching the wall?
Lift it over the tray or bucket after rolling off excess. The nap should look uniformly saturated with no bead forming at the ends, and it should not release drops while held above the container.
