Start with Krylon Fusion All-In-One when your project combines materials, includes plastic or PVC, or will face weather. It is positioned for metal, wood, plastic, PVC, laminate, glass, ceramic, plaster and other surfaces, with indoor/outdoor use, rust protection and no-sand/no-prime convenience. Choose COLORmaxx Paint + Primer for conventional furniture, craft and décor work where color and sheen choice matter most. Add COLORmaxx Primer first on bare, uneven or difficult surfaces; select Fusion Metallic for reflective color, Fusion Textured for a grippy, dimensional surface, and Fusion Clear for a protective topcoat. The right choice depends on the substrate, exposure, preparation, finish and drying conditions—not just the color on the cap.

What is the difference between Fusion All-In-One and COLORmaxx?
Both lines combine paint and primer features, but they are aimed at different decisions. Fusion emphasizes adhesion across many substrates and indoor/outdoor versatility; COLORmaxx emphasizes conventional color, sheen selection and general furniture or craft coverage.
Fusion All-In-One
Fusion is the safer first choice when one project contains several materials or when plastic, PVC, laminate, glass or ceramic is involved. Krylon lists it for metal, wood, plastic, PVC, laminate, glass, ceramic, plaster and other surfaces, and describes indoor/outdoor use, rust protection and no-sand/no-prime positioning. The product page also makes a “5X stronger adhesion” claim; that is a manufacturer claim, not a dated independent test result.
COLORmaxx Paint + Primer
COLORmaxx suits a wood chair, side table, decorative object or craft where you mainly need a familiar color and sheen. Krylon describes premium coverage, adhesion, durability, rust protection, fast drying and a large push-button spray tip. It is still a paint job, so cleaning, scuffing and thin coats determine the result more than the primer wording on the can.
When the two lines overlap
Either can work on several common materials when the surface is correctly prepared. Use the can’s label as the final authority if it narrows the permitted substrate, exposure or recoat instructions for your particular color or finish.
Which Krylon spray paint works best on plastic, PVC and laminate?
For plastic, PVC or laminate, begin with Fusion All-In-One. Its listed substrate range and adhesion-focused formulation address the bonding problem that causes ordinary paint to chip or peel on slick surfaces.
Previously painted plastic may still need light sanding. Wash away grease, wax and dirt, let the surface dry completely, and remove flaking paint before spraying. On a glossy laminate or plastic part, a fine-grit scuff gives the coating a mechanical key; do not assume “no sand” means “skip cleaning or repair.”

Fusion Metallic is an option when the same plastic, PVC, laminate or metal object needs a reflective metallic appearance. Metallic pigments reveal scratches and unevenness, so preparation and smooth, overlapping passes are especially important.
Do I need a separate primer for Krylon spray paint?
Not always. Fusion All-In-One and COLORmaxx Paint + Primer are designed to combine those steps on suitable, prepared surfaces, but a separate primer is valuable when the substrate is bare, uneven, porous, difficult to bond to or likely to distort the final color.
Use COLORmaxx Primer first when
- The surface is bare or absorbs paint unevenly.
- Minor dents, grain or color variation need smoothing.
- You need the topcoat to show a truer, more uniform color.
- Extra adhesion is more important than saving one application step.
Apply the primer as its own thin, even coat, allow the label-specified drying or recoat time, and then apply the chosen color. On glass and ceramic, light sanding can help, but primer makes glass opaque; use it only when that change in appearance is acceptable.
How should I prepare a surface before spraying?
Krylon’s guidance is simple: “A perfect project starts with great prep.” Preparation prevents most adhesion and finish failures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Clean and dry the object. Remove dust, grease, wax, polish and other contaminants. Do not spray while moisture remains in seams or texture.
- Remove loose material. Take off peeling paint and loose rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or steel wool.
- Scuff glossy areas. Use fine-grain sandpaper on shiny paint, plastic or laminate so the new coating can grip.
- Repair and smooth. Fill or level obvious defects when the finish demands a uniform surface. Textured paint can disguise minor flaws, but it will not correct structural damage.
- Wipe with a tack cloth. Remove sanding dust immediately before masking and spraying.
- Prime where the substrate or finish requires it. Exterior metal should be primed for greatest durability. Glass and ceramic may benefit from primer, with the opacity trade-off noted above.
- Test first. Spray a hidden area or scrap made from the same material to confirm adhesion, color and sheen.
How do I apply Krylon spray paint without runs or patchiness?
Correct spray movement matters more than trying to cover everything in one pass. Work in a ventilated area, protect surrounding surfaces, and follow the label’s safety instructions.
- Condition the can. Shake Fusion and COLORmaxx cans for one to two minutes. Continue shaking periodically during the job.
- Set up a test surface. Practice on scrap material so you can establish distance, speed and overlap before touching the project.
- Start off the object. Begin the spray pattern beside the workpiece, move across it, and release the button only after the pass has cleared the far edge.
- Move evenly side to side. Keep the can moving at a steady speed rather than lingering over one spot.
- Overlap each pass by about one third. This prevents stripes and thin gaps without flooding the surface.
- Build several thin coats. Thin layers reduce sags and give solvents time to escape. Allow the product’s stated dry or recoat interval between coats.
- Inspect under the intended light. Check edges, recesses and undersides for missed areas before the final coat or clear finish.
Holding the can still, spraying too close, or trying to hide a dark substrate in one heavy coat commonly causes runs, orange peel and slow drying.
What temperature and humidity are best?
For Fusion All-In-One and Fusion Clear, Krylon lists best results at 55°F to 75°F with humidity below 60%. Conditions outside that range can change flow, gloss, adhesion and drying, so a product that feels dry in cool or damp air may still be soft underneath.

Sun-heated metal, cold plastic, wind, dust and direct rain can also spoil a finish even when the air temperature appears suitable. Move the object into a shaded, clean, stable environment and let it reach room temperature before spraying.

The figures below are product-page specifications, not guarantees for every surface, coat schedule or weather condition.
| Product | Dry to touch | Dry to handle | Stated coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fusion All-In-One, 12-ounce can | Approximately 20 minutes | Approximately 1 hour | About 25 square feet |
| COLORmaxx Metallic, 11-ounce can | Approximately 10 minutes | Approximately 1 hour | About 20–25 square feet |
“Dry to touch” means the surface no longer feels wet; it does not mean the coating has reached full hardness. Handling, masking, stacking or exposing the item to weather too soon can leave fingerprints or damage the film. Use the label’s recoat and cure directions for the exact product.
Which Krylon finish should I choose: flat, satin, gloss, metallic or textured?
Flat
Flat minimizes reflected light and can make small surface irregularities less conspicuous. It is a practical choice when you want a subdued, non-reflective appearance.
Satin
Satin balances color visibility with moderate reflection. It is often a forgiving middle ground for furniture and décor when a full gloss would emphasize every mark.

Gloss produces the strongest reflection and a lively, polished look. It also highlights sanding scratches, dents and uneven spray technique, so preparation must be more exact.
Metallic
Fusion All-In-One Metallic is designed for reflective metallic color on compatible plastic, laminate, PVC and metal. Spray in thin, consistent passes and avoid rubbing the surface while it is still tender.

Textured
Fusion All-In-One Textured creates a dimensional, grip-enhancing surface for plastic, metal, wood, glass, wicker, vinyl and laminate. It can visually disguise minor imperfections, but its texture is intentional and will not look like a smooth factory coating.
Clear
Fusion All-In-One Clear is a non-yellowing protective topcoat offered in flat, satin and gloss. Krylon recommends it for durable protection on wooden outdoor furniture; choose the sheen that suits the color coat and expect the clear to change how much light the finished piece reflects.
What Krylon paint should I use outdoors?
For outdoor metal or plastic furniture, Krylon’s guidance points to Fusion All-In-One, COLORmaxx and Rust Tough. Fusion is the most straightforward choice when the project combines materials or includes plastic. Exterior metal should receive primer when maximum durability is the priority, even if the color product advertises primer convenience.
For wooden outdoor furniture, Fusion All-In-One Clear provides the recommended protective final coat. Paint only when the object and air are within the product’s temperature and humidity guidance, and keep the freshly coated piece protected while the film hardens.
Aluminum can be spray painted with Fusion All-In-One when it is cleaned and prepared correctly. Glass can also be sprayed, but light sanding and primer may be needed; primer makes the glass opaque, so test the appearance first.
What are the most common Krylon spray-paint problems?
Runs or sags
The coat was too heavy, the can moved too slowly, or the surface was too cold. Let the defect dry, sand it smooth, remove dust and rebuild with lighter passes.
Peeling or chipping
Contamination, gloss, loose old paint or an incompatible substrate prevented bonding. Strip unstable material, clean thoroughly, scuff the surface and use COLORmaxx Primer or a product specifically listed for that substrate.

Rough or dusty finish
Overspray, wind, dust or spraying outside the recommended conditions can leave a grainy surface. Move indoors or to a sheltered area, improve cleaning and keep passes controlled.
Uneven color or sheen
Insufficient shaking, inconsistent overlap or an unprimed porous surface can make the finish blotchy. Shake for the full one to two minutes, maintain about one-third overlap and prime when absorption or contrast is high.
Slow drying
Cool temperatures, high humidity, heavy coats and poor ventilation extend drying. Do not handle merely because the top feels less wet; wait for the label’s stated interval and improve environmental conditions for subsequent coats.

Are Krylon Line-Up and Mark-It the same as decorative spray paint?
No. Line-Up and Mark-It are water-based marking products for temporary grass or sports-field lines. They are a separate use case from decorative coatings for furniture, household objects or craft projects, so choose a decorative product family for those surfaces.
How can I make the final product choice in one minute?
- Identify every material the spray will touch, including plastic, laminate, glass and metal hardware.
- Decide whether the object will stay indoors or face weather, moisture and abrasion.
- Choose smooth, metallic or textured appearance before selecting a color.
- Inspect the existing surface for gloss, rust, peeling paint, porosity and unevenness.
- Select Fusion All-In-One for broad compatibility, COLORmaxx for ordinary color work, or COLORmaxx Primer when the substrate needs a dedicated first coat.
- Confirm the exact can’s label, finish, coverage and recoat directions before buying multiple cans.
That sequence prevents the most expensive mistake: choosing a color first and discovering that the formulation, finish or preparation does not suit the object.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Krylon publish independent durability tests for these products?
The available product information gives manufacturer claims and specifications, including adhesion, rust protection, drying and coverage. No dated independent performance statistics are established here, so treat those figures as product claims rather than laboratory guarantees.
Why can the same color look different on two objects?
The underlying material, primer, previous color and sheen alter how light reflects through the new coating. A test patch on the prepared surface shows the practical result before you commit to the entire piece.

A clear coat changes reflection and can alter the look of metallic pigments. Test the exact combination on scrap first, and follow both products’ labels for compatibility and recoat timing.
What should I check if a can’s listed coverage is not enough?
Coverage varies with porosity, color changes, texture and the number of thin coats required. Measure the project, compare that area with the can’s stated coverage, and allow extra material for overspray, edges and test passes.
