Choose an interior paint by evaluating three separate things: what is in the wet product (VOC content), what it releases into indoor air (measured emissions), and how well the cured film performs (durability and cleanability). A “zero-VOC” label answers only part of the first question; it does not prove zero emissions after tinting. The most defensible comparison pairs a current third-party emissions certification with technical-data-sheet results for scrubbing, stains, hiding, coverage and burnish resistance, then checks whether the sheen and cleaning instructions fit the room. This method prevents a flat wall paint from being compared unfairly with a semi-gloss trim coating and gives you a practical way to balance indoor-air concerns with years of washing and wear.

What should you compare when choosing an interior paint?
Use three columns in your comparison: emissions, durability and cleanability. Keep the evidence for each column separate, because a paint can have very low VOC content yet lack measured emissions data, or scrub well while being unsuitable for a moisture-prone room.
| Axis | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Emissions | VOC content in g/L, emissions certification, base and tint, odor notes and ventilation guidance | VOC content describes the formulation; an emissions certification indicates that a finished product was evaluated for chemicals released into indoor air. |
| Durability | Scrub and stain resistance, washability, hiding, coverage, burnish resistance, dry/recoat times, warranty and test method | These determine how the film handles traffic, marks, repeated cleaning and touch-ups. |
| Cleanability | Sheen, stain-removal instructions, color-rub or burnish warnings and room-use guidance | Sheen changes how easily a wall can be wiped and how visible shiny cleaning marks will be. |
Compare like with like: the same sheen, color family, substrate and application conditions. A flat wall coating and a semi-gloss trim enamel solve different problems and should not be ranked on one overall score.

How are VOC content and chemical emissions different?
VOC content is the amount of volatile organic compounds in the liquid paint, commonly reported in grams per liter. Chemical emissions are what the applied coating releases into room air during and after installation. The EPA notes that “Most conventional paint and coating products off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs).” Water-based acrylic latex is generally lower in VOCs than solvent-based paint, but “zero VOC” does not mean zero chemical emissions.
Colorants are a critical qualification. A base labeled zero or low VOC can gain VOCs when tinted, so record the exact base, colorant system, sheen, region and technical-data-sheet version. Habitable Informed guidance recommends water-based paints with both low VOC content and low VOC emissions, plus colorants that do not increase the base paint’s VOC content when tinted.
| Question | Evidence to seek | What the result does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| How much VOC is in the product? | Current manufacturer specification for the exact base and, where relevant, the tinted product; report g/L. | It does not establish how many chemicals the cured coating emits indoors. |
| Has indoor-air release been evaluated? | A current third-party emissions certification and its scope for the product, sheen and color system. | It does not automatically guarantee superior scrubbing or stain resistance. |
| Will odor be low during installation? | Manufacturer odor guidance, ventilation instructions and emissions documentation. | “Low odor” is not a substitute for measured emissions data. |
PNNL’s Building America Solution Center says indoor concentrations of many VOCs can be up to ten times higher than outdoors. It also notes that emissions are usually highest when materials are new and decline over time. Ventilate during application and while odor persists, following the label and local safety requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich emissions certifications are useful for interior paint?
Prefer a current, third-party certification rather than relying on a marketing phrase alone. PNNL identifies these certification routes as acceptable for low- or no-VOC site-applied paints and coatings: GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold, Indoor Advantage Gold, CDPH Section 01350, Green Seal GS-11, Green Wise and MPI Green Performance.
PNNL’s guidance sets a specific project target: at least 90% of the interior surface area covered by site-applied paints and coatings should use low- or no-VOC products certified by one of those third-party standards. That is a building-project criterion, not a claim that every paint carrying a “green” label has identical emissions performance.

- Confirm that the certificate is current and covers the product line, sheen and intended color system.
- Check whether the listing applies to the US product and formulation you can actually buy; regional formulas can differ.
- Keep the certificate or listing record with the technical data sheet and purchase details.
- Do not treat a certification as a durability rating; obtain scrub, stain and burnish information separately.
How do you compare durability claims fairly?
Durability is not one number. Read the technical data sheet for the exact product and sheen, and note the test method whenever one is given. Manufacturer phrases such as “excellent scrub resistance” are useful screening claims, but they are not a shared cross-brand laboratory ranking.
Scrub and wash resistance
Look for a scrub-resistance result or classification, the test standard used and any limits on cleaning chemicals. A coating that survives repeated washing may still lose sheen or show burnish if rubbed aggressively.
Stain resistance
Record the stains tested, dwell time and cleaning agent. “Stain resistant” can mean different things depending on whether the test involved food, grease, crayons or colored liquids. Use the product’s own stain-removal instructions rather than assuming that a household cleaner is safe.
Hiding and coverage
Hiding describes how well the film masks the previous color; coverage is the area a gallon can coat under stated conditions. Both depend on surface porosity, color change, application method and film thickness. A one-coat claim should be treated as conditional unless the manufacturer states the substrate, color and preparation requirements.
Burnish resistance
Burnishing is a shiny or darker-looking area created by rubbing. It matters on hallways, stairwells and children’s rooms where spot cleaning is frequent. Ask for a burnish-resistance statement and follow the specified cleaning technique.

Dry, recoat and cure times
Dry time is not the same as full cure. Record the stated dry and recoat intervals, temperature and humidity assumptions, and when routine washing is permitted. Cleaning too soon can damage an otherwise durable film.
Warranty and documentation
A warranty can reveal the manufacturer’s intended use, but read exclusions for substrate preparation, moisture, color change and labor. Save the product name, batch or formula information, sheen and technical-data-sheet date so a future touch-up uses a compatible coating.
Which paint finish is easiest to wash without shiny burnish marks?
Higher sheens are generally easier to wipe or scrub, but use the product’s own sheen guidance because formulations differ. The finish must balance cleanability against glare and the visibility of wall imperfections.
| Sheen | Typical advantage | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Flat | Low reflection and better concealment of minor surface irregularities | Confirm the product’s washability and burnish guidance; frequent spot cleaning can reveal rub marks. |
| Eggshell | Moderate reflection with more wipeability than a typical flat finish | Check whether the manufacturer recommends it for the room’s cleaning frequency. |
| Satin | More scrub-friendly surface for busy or moisture-prone areas | Inspect the wall carefully because increased sheen can emphasize flaws and cleaning tracks. |
| Semi-gloss | High cleanability and maximum moisture resistance among these common wall sheens | Use where the appearance and stronger reflection are acceptable; verify that it is intended for the substrate. |
For example, the current Ovation Plus guidance places eggshell in wipe-down rooms, satin in rooms requiring scrub cleaning or facing moisture, and semi-gloss where maximum durability is wanted. Treat that as the manufacturer’s guidance for that product, not a universal rule for every brand.
What do current product examples show?

How do you build a reliable paint comparison step by step?
- Define the room and failure you need to prevent. Note traffic, children or pets, moisture, likely stains, desired appearance and whether the wall will be cleaned often.
- Choose comparable products. Compare wall paints with wall paints and the same sheen where possible. Record the substrate, primer, color family and application method.
- Capture emissions data separately. Write down VOC content in g/L for the exact base and tint, then record any current third-party emissions certification and its scope.
- Read the technical data sheet. Extract scrub, stain, washability, hiding, coverage, burnish, dry/recoat and cure information, including test methods and conditions.
- Read the cleaning instructions. Note approved cleaners, waiting time before washing, sponge or cloth limitations and warnings about color rub-off or burnishing.
- Check practical quantities and cost. Multiply the stated coverage by the number of coats required for your surface and add waste for porosity, texture and color changes. Treat a listed price as a date- and retailer-specific starting point.
- Verify the current documents. Product formulas, certificates, warranties and retailer routes can change. Save the page date and document version with your project records.
- Plan ventilation and occupant protection. Ventilate during application and while odor remains, keep occupants away as directed on the label, and allow the stated cure period before routine washing.
Which paint characteristics matter most by room?
Hallways and stairways
Prioritize scrub resistance, stain removal and burnish resistance because these surfaces receive repeated hand contact and spot cleaning. Eggshell or satin may be suitable when the product specifically supports the cleaning frequency, while a high-sheen finish can expose wall repairs.
Children’s rooms and playrooms
Combine a current emissions certification with documented stain and scrub performance. Confirm that tinting does not raise the base paint’s VOC content and that the cleaning instructions match the marks you expect to remove.
Kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms
Give extra weight to moisture and washability guidance. Satin or semi-gloss may be recommended by a particular manufacturer for scrub-clean or moisture-prone rooms, but do not infer suitability from sheen alone; check the technical data sheet and substrate requirements.
Bedrooms and low-traffic areas
Lower sheen can reduce glare and hide minor surface defects. If cleaning is infrequent, a lower-sheen product with a strong emissions certification may be a better balance than selecting the most reflective finish solely for theoretical washability.

What common comparison mistakes should you avoid?
- Using “zero VOC” as a complete indoor-air verdict: separate VOC content from measured emissions and check the tinted product.
- Comparing different sheens as though they were equivalent: sheen changes cleaning behavior, reflection and defect visibility.
- Accepting a marketing superlative without a test reference: request the technical data sheet and method for scrub, stain or hiding claims.
- Assuming one-coat coverage: coverage depends on substrate, color, porosity, film thickness and preparation.
- Washing before the film has cured: follow the product’s waiting period, not merely the time when the surface feels dry.
- Ignoring ventilation because odor is mild: emissions are commonly higher when materials are new and decline over time.
- Relying on an old data sheet: historical performance descriptions can provide context but should not be presented as current specifications.
How should historical product information be used?
A Sherwin-Williams sheet dated April 2013 described Emerald as exceptionally durable and washable, Harmony as zero VOC with a durable finish that withstands frequent washing, and Duration Home as allowing many stains to be wiped with water or mild soap. Those statements are historical context, not current product specifications. For a present-day decision, use the current technical data sheet and sustainability records; Sherwin-Williams directs users to current Ecomedes records and product data sheets for sustainability attributes and VOC limits.
The same discipline applies to any brand: preserve the date, region, product version and sheen for every claim. A formulation change can alter VOC content, emissions certification, coverage or cleaning performance without changing a familiar product name.
What is the practical decision rule?
First eliminate products that lack acceptable emissions documentation for your project or that become unsuitable after tinting. Among the remaining options, select the sheen and technical performance that match the room’s cleaning demands, then confirm coverage, cure time, warranty and cost. The best interior paint is therefore not the one with the lowest label number or highest sheen in isolation; it is the product with credible emissions evidence and documented performance for the exact color, surface and cleaning routine you will use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do primers need the same emissions review as finish paint?
Yes. Primer can cover a large portion of the interior surface and can contribute to indoor emissions, so record its VOC content, emissions certification and technical data separately from the finish coat. Confirm that the primer is approved for the substrate and compatible with the selected topcoat.
What should I do when a paint has no third-party emissions certification?
Ask the manufacturer for current emissions test results, the tested formulation and the test standard. If those documents are unavailable, treat the emissions comparison as unresolved rather than translating a low-VOC or low-odor phrase into a measured result.
Can two cans with the same color name clean differently?
They can if the sheen, product line, base, tinting system or regional formulation differs. Match the full product code and sheen, and keep a small labeled touch-up container so later repairs use the same formulation.
Why does a freshly washed wall sometimes look shinier?
Rubbing can burnish the coating, creating a polished-looking patch even when the paint has not been removed. Use the manufacturer’s recommended cloth, cleaner and pressure, and wait until the stated cure period has passed before routine washing.
