The best-value paint is not necessarily the cheapest can or the one with the largest square-feet-per-gallon claim. Compare paints that serve the same job, then calculate how many coats your surface actually needs, how well the finish will tolerate its exposure, and the total material cost per finished square foot. A lower-priced gallon can cost more if it hides poorly, needs an additional coat, fails on a damp or high-traffic surface, or requires repainting sooner.

How should I compare paint before buying?
Compare candidates only after matching the project conditions. Interior wall paint should be compared with other interior wall paints, not exterior enamel; satin with satin; and products intended for similar substrates and color changes. Otherwise, a coverage or durability advantage may simply reflect a different use case.

Build a side-by-side worksheet
Record these fields for every product:
- Intended use: interior, exterior, trim, cabinet, ceiling, or specialty surface.
- Sheen: flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, or high-gloss.
- Label coverage: the stated range and the conditions attached to it.
- Coats and primer: recommended number of coats and whether a separate primer or sealer is required.
- Substrate: smooth drywall, plaster, masonry, wood, metal, texture, or a previously painted surface.
- Color change: especially a deep, bright, or low-hiding color.
- Cleaning performance: wipeability, scrub resistance, and stain resistance.
- Exposure claims: moisture, mildew, weather, and fade performance that actually match the project.
- Emissions information: VOC declaration and certifications such as GREENGUARD Gold where stated.
- Package and price: can size, price, estimated cans, primer, and application supplies.
- Warranty: coverage period, preparation requirements, and exclusions.
Keep an “evidence and conditions” note beside every number. A 400-square-foot-per-gallon figure is not directly equivalent to a 250–400-square-foot range unless you know the substrate, application method, and whether spray loss is included.
How many gallons of paint do I need?
Start with paintable surface area, then adjust the label coverage for the real surface and the number of coats. The label number is a planning baseline, not a guarantee.
- Measure the paintable area. Measure wall length and height, multiply for each wall, and subtract large openings only if doing so materially changes the estimate. For ceilings, multiply length by width. Measure trim, doors, cabinets, or exterior components separately when they use a different product.
- Choose realistic coverage. Use the lower or middle part of the stated range when the substrate is porous or textured, when you are changing from a dark or bright color, or when application conditions are difficult. A smooth, previously painted surface may approach the upper end.
- Multiply by required coats. Divide the area multiplied by coats by realistic square feet per gallon. For example, 1,000 square feet receiving two coats at an assumed 300 square feet per gallon requires 2,000 ÷ 300, or about 6.7 gallons; plan to buy seven gallons, subject to the product’s package sizes and any primer requirement.
- Add primer and contingencies. Include stain-blocking or adhesion primer where required, plus an allowance for roller or brush waste, spray loss, touch-ups, and future matching. Do not treat paint-and-primer wording as proof that a separate primer is unnecessary on every surface.
- Round to available containers. A five-gallon pail and smaller cans may produce a different total cost than buying the exact mathematical volume. Keep the same product and tint formula for all coats whenever possible.
Why actual coverage differs from the label
Manufacturers identify several variables that reduce effective coverage: substrate porosity, texture, surface condition, color, application technique, and the number of coats. Behr’s published range for Premium Plus Interior/Exterior Hi-Gloss Enamel No. 8150 is 250–400 square feet per gallon depending on application method and substrate porosity, and the figure excludes spray loss. HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams warns that its Spec Right Interior Paint may need multiple coats when surface conditions, technique, or deep and bright colors make hiding difficult.
A historical 2006 United States Coast Guard manual gives an interior latex reference of 450 square feet per gallon for the first coat and 500 for the second on a flat surface. That is a government-manual reference from 2006, not a substitute for the current label of the product you are buying.
What do paint coverage labels actually tell me?
Coverage figures are useful only when their conditions travel with them. The following current label examples illustrate why a single ranking is misleading.

|---|---|---|---|
| HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Interior & Exterior High Gloss | 400 ft²/gal | High-gloss enamel; stain-resistant; protection claims against cracking, peeling, and blistering; mildew-resistant coating; 1-quart, 1-gallon, and 5-gallon sizes | Current product page accessed in 2026; the coverage figure is product-specific. |
| HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Spec Right Interior Paint | 300–400 ft²/gal | Acrylic latex; zero VOC; eggshell, flat, and semi-gloss; multiple coats may be needed | Manufacturer notes that surface condition, technique, and deep or bright colors affect coat count. |
| Behr Premium Plus Interior/Exterior Hi-Gloss Enamel No. 8150 | 250–400 ft²/gal | 100% acrylic; mildew resistant; listed VOC 50 g/L | Range varies by application method and substrate porosity; spray loss is excluded. |

| Benjamin Moore Advance High Gloss | 400–500 ft²/gal | Waterborne alkyd; low VOC; one or two coats; 16-hour recoat time; repeated-washing durability claim | The long recoat interval affects scheduling even when the coverage range looks favorable. |
Use the lower end of any range for a thirsty or irregular surface, and verify whether the figure assumes brush, roller, or spray application. A product that appears to cover more may simply be measured under more favorable conditions.
How do I compare paint cost per square foot?
Compare the cost of the finished job, not just the price printed on one gallon. The basic calculation is:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFinished-square-foot cost = (paint + primer + waste/touch-up allowance + required tools) ÷ paintable surface area.
- Measure the paintable area.
- Estimate gallons from realistic coverage and the required number of coats.
- Multiply gallons and package prices, accounting for the can sizes you must actually purchase.
- Add primer, caulk or patching materials that are part of the preparation, and application tools you do not already own.
- Divide the total material cost by the area. Keep labor separate if you are hiring a contractor, because the paint choice can change labor through extra coats or longer recoat times.
Illustrative arithmetic
Suppose two otherwise comparable paints cover a 1,000-square-foot area in two coats. Paint A realistically covers 300 square feet per gallon, so it needs about 6.7 gallons; Paint B covers 400 square feet per gallon, so it needs five gallons. If Paint B costs more per gallon but avoids two extra cans and a second primer purchase, its finished-square-foot cost may be lower. The calculation must use your actual prices and conditions; the coverage figures here are an illustration of the method, not a product test.
How service life changes exterior value
For exterior work, add a separate service-life scenario. A Sherwin-Williams brochure illustration compares paint priced at $30 per gallon with a stated six-year life against $45 per gallon with a stated 25-year life, and reports $100 per year versus $36 per year under its own assumptions. That is a vendor illustration, not an independent durability study; it excludes labor and maintenance. Use it as a reminder to model repaint frequency, not as proof that one brand or price tier always wins.

Which paint lasts the longest?
The longest-lasting choice is the one whose film and sheen match the exposure. Product claims and sheen guidance are not interchangeable across every formula.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Exposure or room | Starting sheen choice | Why | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-traffic ceilings and rooms | Flat | Low sheen hides minor surface irregularities and is intended for lower wear. | Confirm that the specific flat formula offers the hiding and touch-up properties you need. |
| General living areas | Eggshell | More wipeable than flat while retaining a relatively soft reflection. | Read the product’s cleaning and stain language; “wipeable” is not the same as heavy scrub resistance. |
| Hallways, kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-traffic or moisture-prone rooms | Satin | Guidance describes satin as scrub-cleanable and suited to higher exposure. | Check mildew or moisture claims and follow ventilation and curing instructions. |
| Trim or areas needing maximum durability | Semi-gloss or high-gloss | Higher sheen generally provides a harder, more washable surface; semi-gloss guidance describes maximum durability. | Higher reflection emphasizes dents and unevenness, so preparation matters more. |
Benjamin Moore’s Advance High Gloss separately claims a durable waterborne-alkyd finish that withstands repeated washing. That is a claim for that product, not evidence that every high-gloss paint performs identically. Likewise, a mildew-resistant label does not make a coating suitable for chronically wet or failing substrates.
Is expensive paint worth it?
Sometimes, but only when the added price buys a benefit your project uses. Pay more when the product reduces coat count on your substrate, provides the required scrub or moisture resistance, offers a compatible primer or stain-blocking system, or has a service-life advantage that lowers repaint frequency. A premium finish can be poor value on a low-traffic ceiling if its extra durability is never used.
A practical value test
- Calculate finished-square-foot cost for each candidate, including the realistic number of cans.
- Price the preparation that each system requires. A cheaper topcoat may need a separate primer or more patching to achieve the same result.
- Estimate the cost of an additional coat, including your time or contractor labor.
- For exteriors, model at least two repaint intervals and include access, masking, and maintenance assumptions separately.
- Reject any comparison that relies on an unverified universal brand ranking. The available sources do not provide a controlled, independent cross-brand test that establishes one winner.
How much does preparation affect coverage and service life?
Preparation is part of the paint purchase because contamination, loose coatings, gloss, stains, and porosity determine whether the new film can bond and hide.
- Clean. Remove dirt, grease, chalk, soap residue, and other contamination. Let the surface dry fully.
- Repair and stabilize. Scrape loose or peeling paint, patch defects, and sand rough edges so ridges do not telegraph through the finish.
- Dull glossy areas. Sand or otherwise degloss slick coatings according to the product instructions.
- Seal stains and problem substrates. Use a suitable stain-blocking or adhesion primer on water stains, smoke, tannin bleed, glossy surfaces, porous masonry, or other conditions named on the label.
- Prime for color changes when needed. Deep, bright, or low-hiding colors can require additional coats; a compatible primer or tinted primer may reduce topcoat consumption.
- Control application conditions. Follow temperature, humidity, ventilation, and recoat directions. Poor conditions can extend drying and alter the finish.
Skipping these steps can turn a nominally inexpensive gallon into a more expensive system through extra coats, visible defects, early peeling, or repeated touch-ups.

How do I compare cleanability, moisture performance, VOCs, and warranties?
Read these claims as separate decision points rather than treating one label term as a complete quality score.
| Attribute | What to record | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Scrub and stain resistance | Whether the label says wipeable, scrub-cleanable, stain-resistant, or withstands repeated washing | Match the claim to kitchens, baths, hallways, children’s rooms, trim, or other cleaning exposure. |
| Moisture and mildew | Mildew-resistant coating, moisture suitability, and any substrate restrictions | Useful for humid rooms and exteriors, but not a remedy for leaks, condensation, or damp masonry. |
| VOC or emissions | Zero VOC, low VOC, a numerical value such as 50 g/L, and certifications | Compare like-for-like declarations and follow ventilation guidance; a VOC label does not predict coverage or scrub life. |
| Warranty | Term, required preparation, application limits, geographic or substrate exclusions, and remedy | Use it as a risk document. A warranty with strict preparation conditions may not cover the failure mode you are worried about. |
For example, Spec Right is described as zero VOC, Behr Premium Plus No. 8150 lists VOC at 50 g/L, Valspar Core is described as zero VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified, and Advance High Gloss is described as low VOC. Those declarations should be copied exactly from the current label or technical sheet for the color and sheen you intend to buy.
What common comparison mistakes should I avoid?
Comparing different jobs
Do not compare an exterior high-gloss enamel with an interior eggshell wall paint and call the higher coverage a bargain. Separate the lists by use, sheen, substrate, and exposure first.
Using the best-case coverage for every room
A smooth wall in a similar color may approach the high end of a range; textured drywall, bare wood, masonry, or a dramatic color change may not. Budget from realistic coverage and document the conditions.

Leaving spray loss out of the estimate
At least one current label explicitly excludes spray loss from its coverage figure. If you spray, add a separate allowance rather than applying a roller estimate unchanged.
Treating a primer claim as universal
Paint-and-primer products can simplify suitable repainting jobs, but stains, bare porous surfaces, glossy coatings, and adhesion problems may still require a dedicated primer.
Choosing sheen by appearance alone
Higher sheen can improve washability but also highlights surface defects and changes how color reflects light. Select the minimum sheen that meets the room’s cleaning and moisture demands, then verify the specific product’s performance language.

Use this final checklist at the store or checkout:
- Area and separate measurements for walls, ceilings, trim, and doors.
- Surface type, porosity, texture, existing sheen, and repairs.
- Color change and whether a tinted or stain-blocking primer is needed.
- Realistic coverage, coat count, and any spray-loss or recoat qualification.
- Gallons and package sizes, plus leftover paint for touch-ups.
- Primer, patching materials, masking supplies, brushes, rollers, and cleanup materials.
- Sheen, scrub or stain resistance, mildew or weather claims, and curing instructions.
- VOC declaration, certification, warranty exclusions, and the date you checked the label.
- Finished-square-foot cost and, for exteriors, the repaint interval used in your scenario.
This record makes competing products comparable and gives you a defensible reason for paying more or choosing the lower-priced option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 400-square-foot-per-gallon claim automatically better than a 250–400 range?
No. The figures may be based on different substrates, tools, and measurement conditions. Treat the range and its qualifications as more useful than the headline number, and estimate from the lower or middle end when your surface is porous, textured, or changing color.
Does zero-VOC paint guarantee that I can skip ventilation?
No. Zero-VOC or low-VOC is an emissions declaration, not a promise that a room needs no airflow during application or curing. Follow the product’s ventilation, drying, and safety directions and compare certifications separately from coverage and durability.
What does a long recoat time change in my budget?
It can extend the project schedule and increase labor or access costs even when the paint covers efficiently. Benjamin Moore Advance High Gloss, for example, lists a 16-hour recoat time, so include that delay when comparing systems for a tight deadline.
Can a paint warranty tell me which product will last longest?
Not by itself. Warranties often depend on exact preparation, substrate, application, and maintenance conditions, and their remedies may be limited. Compare the exclusions and required preparation with the failure risks on your project instead of ranking products by warranty length alone.
