How to Compare Paint Prices by Cost per Square Foot

Compare paint fairly by calculating the total containers needed for the same measured area and coat count, then dividing the dated paint cost by completed square feet. This guide covers coverage ranges, rounding, preparation, and a worked Behr example.

The fairest way to compare paint prices is to calculate the total number of containers needed for the same paintable area and number of coats, then divide the resulting paint cost by that area. A low gallon price can be misleading if the product covers less, needs an extra coat, or requires more preparation. Measure the surfaces you will actually paint, subtract openings, use each product’s labeled coverage, round container quantities up, and show primer, tools, tax, delivery, preparation, and labor separately. This method produces a comparable paint-only cost per completed square foot and a more realistic installed-material budget.

What does paint cost per square foot actually tell you?

Cost per square foot converts a package price into the cost of covering a defined surface. The useful figure is not the price printed on one gallon; it is the cost of all containers required to complete the same area with the same number of coats.

For a paint-only comparison, use:

Paint-only cost per square foot = (container price × containers required) ÷ paintable area

“Completed square foot” means one square foot of the surface after the specified coats have been applied. If your comparison assumes two coats, both products must be priced for two coats. Keep labor, primer, tinting, delivery, tax, rollers, trays, tape, drop cloths, and other supplies as separate line items. A low paint-only number is not the same as a low installed cost.

Coverage is a range rather than a guarantee. Sherwin-Williams says a gallon typically covers about 350–400 square feet and notes that application method and surface condition affect the amount needed. Benjamin Moore gives 400–450 square feet for one coat in its estimating guide. Use the exact label or technical data sheet for the product you are pricing instead of treating a generic coverage number as universal.

How do I measure the area that will actually be painted?

Measure walls and other surfaces separately, because ceilings, trim, doors, and specialty surfaces may use different products or sheen categories. Do not use floor area as a substitute for wall area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure each wall

  1. Record the length of each wall in feet.
  2. Multiply each wall length by the wall height to obtain that wall’s gross area.
  3. Add the gross areas together.

For a rectangular room, the shortcut is (2 × room length + 2 × room width) × wall height. Use individual wall measurements when the room has partial walls, alcoves, stair openings, sloped sections, or other irregular geometry.

Subtract windows and doors

Subtract the area of openings from the gross wall total. If you do not have exact dimensions yet, Benjamin Moore’s worked estimating guide uses a rough convention of 15 square feet per window and 20 square feet per door. Those are estimating allowances, not universal dimensions; replace them with measured areas when an opening is unusually large or small.

Paintable wall area = gross wall area − window area − door area

Keep different surfaces in separate buckets

  • Walls: calculate together when they use the same product, color, sheen, and coat plan.
  • Ceilings: measure separately if you will use ceiling paint or a different finish.
  • Trim and baseboards: measure their linear or surface area separately when they use trim enamel or another product.
  • Doors: treat them as their own surfaces if they will be painted with a different coating.

This separation prevents a wall-paint price from being diluted by unpainted floor area or mixed with a product that has different coverage.

Which assumptions must match before comparing two paints?

A fair comparison holds the job conditions constant and changes only the product being evaluated. Dunn-Edwards recommends using identical areas and the same preparation and application conditions for a meaningful comparison.

Comparison input What to hold constant Why it changes the result
Paintable area The same measured wall, ceiling, trim, or door area A larger area requires more containers and changes the denominator.
Coats One coat, two coats, or the number required for the finish Adding a coat increases material consumption.
Surface condition Comparable porosity, texture, repairs, and existing color New, porous, rough, or heavily patched surfaces can consume more paint.
Preparation The same cleaning, sanding, patching, caulking, and priming plan Different preparation needs create costs that are not reflected in gallon price.
Application method Comparable roller, brush, or spray process Application method affects coverage and waste.
Product category Comparable wall paint, ceiling paint, trim coating, and sheen A wall finish and a trim enamel are not equivalent products.
Price basis Same region, retailer, container size, and date Retail prices, manufacturer MSRP, promotions, and geography can differ.

If one product is being compared as a one-coat solution and another as a two-coat solution, report that difference plainly rather than presenting the gallon prices as if the jobs were equivalent.

How many gallons or containers do I need?

Use the labeled coverage and round up to a whole container. Paint is sold in discrete containers, so a fractional result cannot be purchased as calculated.

Containers required = ceiling[(paintable area × coats) ÷ labeled coverage per container]

Apply the formula

  1. Multiply the paintable area by the number of coats.
  2. Divide by the product’s labeled coverage per container for that coat plan.
  3. Round the result up to the next whole container.

Home Depot’s estimating guidance advises increasing the amount when multiple coats are needed and considering a 5% allowance to avoid a shortfall. Treat the allowance as a planning choice: add it when touch-up availability, color consistency, or an uncertain surface makes running short more costly than having leftover paint.

For example, if a job requires 1,000 square feet and the label says one gallon covers 400 square feet for the specified application, two coats require 2,000 square feet of coverage. Dividing 2,000 by 400 gives five gallons; if you add a 5% planning allowance, you would calculate 2,100 square feet of coverage and still round the resulting quantity up to whole containers.

Do not silently substitute a one-coat coverage figure for a two-coat claim. If a manufacturer publishes coverage specifically for two coats, use that figure with the two-coat job rather than doubling it again.

How do I calculate paint-only and full material cost?

Start with the container total, then decide whether your estimate is paint-only or a complete materials budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paint-only cost

Paint-only total = container price × containers required

Paint-only cost per square foot = paint-only total ÷ paintable area

Use the same paintable-area denominator for every candidate. If a product requires three containers and another requires four, the difference belongs in the numerator; do not change the area to make the results look similar.

Full material cost

Add these items as distinct lines when they apply:

  • Primer or bonding primer
  • Tinting or color-related charges
  • Rollers, roller covers, brushes, trays, and extension tools
  • Painter’s tape, masking materials, drop cloths, caulk, patching compound, and sandpaper
  • Delivery and tax

Full material cost per square foot = (paint + primer + supplies + delivery + tax) ÷ paintable area

Keep labor separate. A contractor’s labor price may include preparation, protection, moving furniture, application, cleanup, and return visits; combining it with paint cost can hide which product is driving the difference.

What do the published coverage ranges mean?

Coverage ranges describe expected spread under stated conditions, not a promise that every wall will reach the upper number. Surface texture, porosity, color change, application method, and the number of coats can move your result toward either end.

  • Sherwin-Williams gives a typical range of about 350–400 square feet per gallon and warns that application method and surface condition affect requirements.
  • Benjamin Moore gives 400–450 square feet for one coat in its estimating guide.
  • Behr publishes a two-coat coverage range of 250–400 square feet per gallon for both Premium Plus and Ultra in the cited product information.

Because these figures use different products, coat definitions, and stated conditions, they are not interchangeable. A product showing 400 square feet for one coat cannot automatically be ranked against a product showing 400 square feet for two coats without reconciling the coat assumption.

What does the Behr Premium Plus example cost per square foot?

Behr lists Premium Plus at 250–400 square feet per gallon for two coats and a starting price of $47.98, according to Behr information accessed October 26, 2026. At that starting price, the paint-only cost per paintable square foot is a range:

Product Coverage published by manufacturer Starting price Calculation at high coverage Calculation at low coverage Paint-only cost range
Behr Premium Plus 250–400 sq. ft. per gallon for two coats $47.98 $47.98 ÷ 400 = approximately $0.12/sq. ft. $47.98 ÷ 250 = approximately $0.19/sq. ft. Approximately $0.12–$0.19 per completed sq. ft.
Behr Ultra 250–400 sq. ft. per gallon for two coats $57.98 $57.98 ÷ 400 = approximately $0.14/sq. ft. $57.98 ÷ 250 = approximately $0.23/sq. ft. Approximately $0.14–$0.23 per completed sq. ft.

These calculations use the listed starting prices and the manufacturer’s published coverage range. They are paint-only figures: primer, tools, tax, delivery, preparation, and labor are excluded. The prices are dated to the Behr information accessed October 26, 2026; retailer, region, promotions, and later price changes can produce a different result.

For a real room, multiply the price by the number of whole gallons required, not just by the theoretical coverage denominator. If your measured job falls between coverage endpoints, calculate both a conservative and an optimistic case so the budget shows the likely spread.

How should I build a side-by-side comparison table?

Use one row per product and record every input that affects the result. A dated price column is essential because manufacturer MSRP, retailer prices, region, and promotions can differ, as illustrated by the October 19, 2026 price snapshot from MatchThatPaint.

Product line Container size Price and date Labeled coverage Coats assumed Containers required Paint-only total Cost per completed sq. ft. Primer requirement Surface or sheen suitability
Candidate A Record the package size Record retailer, region, and date Copy the exact label range State one, two, or more Use the rounded-up formula Price × containers Total ÷ same paintable area Record stated requirement; if unavailable, write “not stated” Record the manufacturer’s stated use and sheen
Candidate B Record the package size Record retailer, region, and date Copy the exact label range State one, two, or more Use the rounded-up formula Price × containers Total ÷ same paintable area Record stated requirement; if unavailable, write “not stated” Record the manufacturer’s stated use and sheen

Do not leave a missing specification looking like a favorable zero. Write “not stated” and verify the data sheet or label before treating the product as comparable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do primer and surface preparation change the comparison?

Primer can change the total cost even when it does not appear in the advertised paint price. New drywall, porous patches, severe color changes, stains, glossy surfaces, and repairs may need a separate preparation step. The exact primer requirement depends on the product and surface; record the manufacturer’s stated requirement rather than assuming every paint is self-priming in every situation.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

Preparation also affects labor and consumption. Cleaning, sanding, patching, caulking, and spot-priming should be listed as assumptions in both candidates. If Product A is priced on a smooth, sealed wall and Product B on an unsealed, repaired wall, the resulting cost-per-square-foot comparison is not testing the products on equal terms.

When the surface condition is uncertain, show two scenarios: a prepared, sealed surface and a higher-consumption surface. This is more informative than hiding the uncertainty inside one precise-looking number.

How do I compare paints sold in different container sizes?

Normalize the calculation to the quantity needed for the job, not to the sticker price of one package. A smaller container can have a lower entry price but require more packages; a larger container can have a higher price but fewer units and less packaging waste.

If a product’s label gives coverage only for a different container size or coat condition, do not scale it without confirming that the coverage statement is intended to apply. Use “not stated” in a comparison table when the evidence does not establish a value.

What mistakes make a cost-per-square-foot estimate unreliable?

Using floor area for walls

Floor area ignores wall height and openings. Measure the painted surfaces themselves.

Comparing one coat with two

A one-coat price can look cheaper simply because it represents less material. Put the same coat count in every row.

Using the top of a coverage range as a promise

Calculate a range when the label provides a range. Rough, porous, or heavily contrasting surfaces may perform nearer the lower end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failing to round up

A result of 2.1 gallons means three whole gallons, not 2.1 gallons purchased. Decide separately whether to add the optional 5% allowance recommended in Home Depot’s estimating guidance.

Mixing wall paint with trim or ceiling products

Different products can have different prices, coverage, and sheen requirements. Keep each surface category separate.

What is the quickest repeatable workflow?

Use this checklist whenever you compare two or more products:

  1. List every surface and measure its paintable area.
  2. Subtract measured windows and doors; use the 15-square-foot window and 20-square-foot door conventions only as rough estimates when dimensions are unavailable.
  3. Separate walls, ceilings, trim, and doors when they use different coatings.
  4. Choose one coat plan, surface condition, preparation plan, application method, and sheen category for all candidates.
  5. Copy each product’s exact labeled coverage and price, including the date and seller or manufacturer.
  6. Calculate required coverage and divide by labeled coverage.
  7. Round containers up; decide whether a 5% allowance is appropriate.
  8. Calculate paint-only total and divide by the same paintable area.
  9. Add primer and supplies as separate material lines, then show labor separately.
  10. Report a range when coverage or price is a range, and explain which assumption drives the low and high cases.

How can I set up a simple calculator?

Create one row for each product and enter the following fields:

  • Paintable area: square feet of the actual surface.
  • Coats: the number required for the comparison.
  • Coverage per container: the exact label value, or the low and high values when a range is published.
  • Container price: the dated price for the selected package.
  • Container quantity: ceiling of area multiplied by coats, divided by coverage.
  • Paint-only total: price multiplied by rounded quantity.
  • Paint-only cost per square foot: total divided by paintable area.

For a range, run the calculation twice: once with the high coverage and once with the low coverage. If the price itself varies by retailer or region, run each dated price as its own scenario instead of averaging prices that may not be available together.

What should determine the final choice?

Choose the product that meets the surface and finish requirement at an acceptable total cost for the job, not necessarily the one with the lowest gallon price. A product with a higher package price may require fewer containers; a product with a lower paint-only figure may still need primer or extra preparation. The comparison is strongest when it shows paint-only cost, full material cost, and labor as three distinct numbers under identical assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I calculate cost per square foot for one coat or two?

Use the number of coats your project actually needs, and apply that same number to every product in the comparison. If you are deciding between one- and two-coat systems, publish two clearly labeled scenarios rather than blending them into one average.

Is a manufacturer’s coverage range the amount I can expect on my wall?

It is an estimate under stated conditions, not a guarantee. Texture, porosity, color change, application method, and surface preparation can move real consumption toward the low end, so budget using a range when the label supplies one.

How should leftover paint be treated in a cost comparison?

Charge the project for the whole containers you must buy, because that is the cash outlay. You may assign useful value to leftover paint for future touch-ups, but do not subtract an assumed resale or reuse value unless you can document it.

Can I use the same cost-per-square-foot figure for ceilings and trim?

Only if those surfaces use the same product, sheen, coat plan, and coverage assumptions. Otherwise calculate each surface category separately and combine the totals only after all required containers and materials are priced.
