In desktop Photoshop, pen pressure is configured in two places: Brush Settings determines what pressure changes, while your tablet driver determines how physical force is translated into that signal. Press B, open Window > Brush Settings, choose Shape Dynamics, and set Size Jitter > Control to Pen Pressure. For pressure-sensitive opacity, use Transfer > Opacity Jitter > Control > Pen Pressure. Then test with a plain round brush before changing advanced settings.
The two-layer model: Photoshop and the tablet driver
Photoshop can assign pressure to brush size, opacity, flow, angle, rotation, roundness, scatter, texture depth, and eraser behavior, depending on the brush and tool. Adobe documents these controls in its painting-tools guide and graphics-tablet guide.

The tablet driver sits earlier in the input chain. Its pressure curve decides how quickly light, medium, and heavy physical pressure become the values Photoshop receives. Changing a brush preset cannot repair a driver that is not reporting pressure, and changing the driver curve cannot enable pressure on a brush with no pressure control assigned.
The fastest desktop setup
- Press B to select the Brush tool.
- Choose a basic round brush and create a new document.
- Set the tool’s top-level Opacity and Flow to 100% for testing.
- Open Window > Brush Settings.
- Select Shape Dynamics. Under Size Jitter, set Control to Pen Pressure.
- Draw lines with gradually increasing force. Light pressure should produce a narrower mark and heavier pressure a wider one.
- If opacity should vary too, select Transfer and set Opacity Jitter > Control to Pen Pressure.
This is Adobe’s documented workflow; labels can vary slightly by Photoshop version, selected tool, brush, and workspace. Adobe’s tablet-support article was updated February 8, 2024, so check the current interface if a label has moved: Adobe tablet support for Photoshop.

Control brush size with pressure
Use Size Jitter and Minimum Diameter
For purely pressure-based size, leave Size Jitter at 0% and use Control: Pen Pressure. The pressure signal then determines the size within the brush’s diameter range.
- Minimum Diameter 0%: permits very fine marks at light pressure and is useful for testing, sketching, and tapered lines.
- Higher Minimum Diameter: keeps the stroke from disappearing when pressure drops, which is often preferable for masking, retouching, and controlled inking.
A large minimum diameter does not disable pressure; it narrows the visible size range. A pressure curve that is too soft can also make lines thicken earlier than intended.
Control opacity and flow with pressure
Opacity
In Transfer, set Opacity Jitter > Control to Pen Pressure. Light pressure lays down a more transparent mark; heavy pressure approaches the brush’s maximum opacity. This suits shading, blending, airbrushing, masking, and retouching.
Flow
Set Flow Jitter > Control to Pen Pressure when you want pressure to regulate how quickly paint accumulates during a continuous stroke. Keep the brush’s overall opacity or flow below 100% for gradual buildup. Opacity limits the stroke’s maximum transparency; flow controls the rate of deposition while you continue drawing.

Using pressure for both size and opacity can feel unpredictable at first: a lighter touch makes the line both thinner and fainter. Start with one pressure-controlled property, then add the second only when you can predict the result.
Options-bar pressure buttons
Some Photoshop versions and tools show quick controls such as Tablet Pressure Controls Size and Tablet Pressure Controls Opacity in the options bar. They are convenient shortcuts, but Brush Settings exposes the full set of dynamics and is the reliable place to verify the assignment. The buttons shown depend on the Photoshop version, selected tool, brush, workspace, and device.
Adjust the pressure curve in your tablet software
- Open the tablet manufacturer’s control panel.
- Create or select an application-specific profile for Photoshop.
- Find the pen-pressure, tip-feel, or pressure-curve control.
- Test a softer, neutral, and firmer curve, applying each before testing the same Photoshop brush.
A soft curve reaches thick or opaque output with less physical force. A firm curve requires more force and gives more room for delicate control near the light-pressure end. A linear curve is the best diagnostic starting point. These settings are not interchangeable with Photoshop’s brush dynamics: the driver shapes the input signal, while Photoshop maps that signal to size, opacity, or another behavior.
For Wacom hardware, Adobe recommends adding Photoshop in Wacom Tablet Properties under application-specific settings. See Adobe’s tablet-support instructions.

Starting points for common workflows
| Goal | Starting setup | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sketching | Size controlled by pressure; low-to-moderate Minimum Diameter; neutral or moderately soft curve | A very soft curve can thicken lines unintentionally |
| Inking | Size controlled by pressure; controlled taper; neutral-to-firm curve | Consistent hand pressure matters more |
| Painting | Opacity and possibly size controlled by pressure; lower flow; moderate smoothing | Both controls together can vary too much |
| Soft shading | Opacity or flow controlled by pressure; low overall brush opacity; low smoothing | Building tones may require several passes |
| Photo retouching | Opacity controlled by pressure; moderate Minimum Diameter; low flow | Excessive sensitivity makes retouching patchy |
| Masking | Usually opacity controlled by pressure; size fixed or only mildly pressure-sensitive | Too much sensitivity can create uneven mask edges |
| Airbrushing | Flow or opacity controlled by pressure; low overall flow | Output can feel weak if you expect an opaque stroke |
Fix pen pressure when it is not working
1. Separate a brush problem from a tablet problem
Use a new document, a basic round brush, 100% opacity and flow, and slow light-to-heavy strokes. If this brush responds, the tablet is communicating and the original preset is the likely culprit. Check its dynamics, Minimum Diameter, opacity, flow, texture, scatter, and smoothing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Verify the pressure assignment
Open Window > Brush Settings. Confirm Shape Dynamics > Size Jitter > Control: Pen Pressure. If opacity should respond, confirm the corresponding setting under Transfer. Wacom gives the same first diagnostic check: Wacom’s Photoshop pressure troubleshooting.
3. Check the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility
If pressure fails in the tablet utility too, investigate the USB or Bluetooth connection, pen nib, driver, tablet hardware, and operating-system permissions. If the utility sees pressure but Photoshop does not, continue with the Photoshop and protocol checks below.
4. Update or change the tablet driver
Adobe says outdated, corrupt, or buggy drivers can cause pressure failures. Install the current driver from the manufacturer, restart Photoshop, and restart the computer if the driver was reinstalled. If the newest driver introduced the problem, test the manufacturer’s previous stable version rather than assuming “latest” is always best. Avoid running multiple tablet drivers at once where possible.

5. Check the Photoshop application profile
Make sure Photoshop is listed in the tablet driver’s application-specific settings and that the correct pen and tablet are selected. A tablet can work in another application while Photoshop uses a wrong or missing profile.
6. Check Windows Ink and WinTab
Windows Ink and WinTab are competing input technologies. The correct choice depends on the tablet, driver, and workflow; do not enable or disable Windows Ink universally. Check the tablet control panel for Use Windows Ink, follow the manufacturer’s WinTab instructions if required, and restart Photoshop after changing the setting. Adobe explains this distinction in its tablet-support FAQ.
7. Disable Windows press-and-hold right-click behavior if needed
On Windows, press-and-hold can be interpreted as a right-click. Adobe’s documented workaround is:
- Open Control Panel > Pen and Touch.
- Select Press and hold, then choose Settings.
- Disable Enable press and hold for right-clicking.
8. Handle macOS issues as version-specific
Confirm that the tablet driver supports your installed macOS version, restart the driver and Photoshop, and check the manufacturer’s required permissions. Adobe’s instructions about disabling legacy Ink handwriting options apply to macOS 10.14 and earlier; they are not the default fix for current macOS releases. Test again with a new document and default brush.

When pressure works in the tablet utility but not Photoshop
- Verify Shape Dynamics and Transfer assignments.
- Check Photoshop’s application profile in the tablet driver.
- Review Windows Ink/WinTab selection if using Windows.
- Restart Photoshop; restart the computer after driver changes.
- Test the diagnostic brush described below.
- Reset or reload the brush if only one preset fails.
This split is useful: pressure absent in the manufacturer utility points away from brush settings, while pressure present there indicates a Photoshop configuration, profile, protocol, or brush-preset issue.
Build a reliable diagnostic brush
- Basic round brush.
- Size controlled by Pen Pressure.
- Brush opacity and flow at 100%.
- Minimum Diameter near 0% for the widest test range.
- No texture, scattering, dual brush, random jitter, or special tip behavior.
- Smoothing low or off. Adobe notes that high smoothing can introduce rendering delay: painting tools documentation.
- Default, linear tablet pressure curve.
Test dots, short strokes, long strokes, and slow curves. Change one variable at a time, then save this brush as a diagnostic preset for future driver or Photoshop updates.
Why pressure feels too weak, too strong, or inconsistent
- Wrong pressure curve: soften it if you press hard, or firm it if marks become heavy too soon.
- High Minimum Diameter: the brush responds, but its thinnest and thickest sizes are too close together.
- Low brush opacity or flow: a brush capped below 100% cannot become fully opaque.
- Too many dynamics: simultaneous size, opacity, flow, texture, and scatter controls multiply variation.
- High smoothing: can delay the visible response.
- Worn nib or unstable connection: physical input can become erratic.
- Different brushes: comparing presets with different dynamics can falsely suggest a tablet problem.
- Update or protocol change: Photoshop or the driver may behave differently after an update.
More sensitivity is not automatically better. A comfortable curve that matches your hand is preferable to a setting that forces excessive pressure or makes every light touch too large.
Photoshop on iPad and Apple Pencil
iPad Photoshop uses in-app Apple Pencil controls rather than the desktop driver and Windows Ink/WinTab workflow. Open Photoshop’s app settings, choose Input > Apple Pencil, and adjust Pressure sensitivity. Toward Light, dense strokes appear with less force; toward Heavy, more force is needed and fine strokes become easier. Brush options also include Use pressure for size and Use pressure for opacity. See Adobe’s Photoshop brushes on iPad guide.
Do you need a new tablet?
Do not replace hardware until the diagnostic utility, driver, application profile, and brush settings have been checked. Replacement becomes reasonable when the tablet is unsupported by your current operating system, its driver is discontinued, the active area is too small, the pen or tablet has a confirmed hardware fault, or you specifically want the hand-eye alignment of a display tablet.

A screenless tablet can provide the same pressure workflow as a display tablet; a display mainly changes where you look and draw. Pressure-level counts alone do not determine feel—driver stability, curve tuning, brush behavior, ergonomics, active area, compatibility, warranty, and support matter as well. Adobe’s current desktop requirements page, updated June 4, 2026, covers Photoshop 27.x and later and lists 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended: Adobe Photoshop technical requirements.
Alternatives without a pressure-sensitive device
A mouse or trackpad cannot provide true stylus-pressure data. You can still use fixed-size brushes, adjust opacity and flow manually, use the Fade control in brush dynamics where appropriate, and work with low-opacity strokes for masking or retouching. A basic pen tablet is sufficient if you later decide that pressure control is worth adding; an expensive display tablet is not required.
