A dynamic image is an image that a system selects, transforms, or personalizes at the time it is requested, rather than delivering one unchanged file to everyone. It may be resized for a screen, cropped for a layout, converted to a supported format, or changed using data such as a product, campaign, or audience. “Dynamic image” is an umbrella term—not one file format—and the result can still be an ordinary, still image.

What makes an image dynamic?

A static image is typically prepared as a particular file and served largely unchanged. A dynamic image is produced or selected according to rules and context. For example, a shop could use one original product photograph to deliver a small WebP image for a mobile card, a larger AVIF image for a high-density display, and a square crop for a product tile.

Possible inputs include viewport size, device-pixel ratio, browser capabilities, the image’s placement, network conditions, and content-management rules. In more tailored systems, the image can also depend on product or inventory data, location, campaign, user segment, search query, date, or a manually assigned focal point. AWS describes policies that can use request headers and device characteristics to control transformations in its image-transformation solution.

Different meanings of “dynamic image”

The phrase is used for several related but distinct things. Identifying which meaning applies helps avoid confusion when evaluating a tool or reading product documentation.

Dynamic image transformation

An image service takes an original asset and, when requested, resizes, crops, compresses, or converts it. AWS describes on-demand transformation for responsive delivery; similar workflows are documented by Cloudinary and Adobe Dynamic Media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Responsive image delivery

A website or service selects an image rendition appropriate to the layout, viewport, or display density. Adobe’s responsive image library, for example, uses configured breakpoints in logical CSS pixels and can account for device-pixel ratio when choosing a rendition. See its responsive image library configuration.

Personalized or data-driven imagery

A template or service can alter an image’s content or overlays using data—for example, showing a campaign message, price, product, or location. This is more than making the same picture smaller for a phone: it introduces data handling, brand, privacy, and cache-isolation considerations.

Dynamic image assets in Google Ads

Google Ads uses “dynamic image assets” for an advertising feature that can extract images from an advertiser’s landing page and select suitable clickable assets for Search ads. Google says these are account-level automated assets; eligibility and whether a suitable image is found affect serving. Clicks are charged on a CPC basis like clicks on a text headline, with the actual cost determined by the campaign auction. This is an ad feature, not a general image-delivery technology. Details are in Google’s support documentation.

HDR and dynamic range

In photography and app development, “dynamic” may refer to an image’s brightness range. High-dynamic-range (HDR) rendering concerns how brightness and color are represented, not whether an image is generated at request time. Apple discusses HDR rendering and its distinction from standard dynamic range in its Core Graphics documentation.

Dynamic image versus static image

Characteristic Static image Dynamic image
How it is prepared Usually exported in advance as a fixed file. Selected, transformed, or composed at request time.
Variants Additional sizes and crops may need separate exports. Rules can generate multiple variants from a source asset.
Context Usually the same file regardless of viewer or placement. Can respond to device, layout, browser, campaign, or other data.
Operational complexity Often simpler to serve and troubleshoot. Requires transformation rules, caching, and quality checks.
Performance Predictable if files are well optimized. Can reduce unnecessary bytes, but processing and cache design matter.

Dynamic and responsive overlap, but they are not synonyms. “Responsive image” generally describes matching delivery to a layout or device; “dynamic image” can also cover smart crops, format conversion, overlays, personalization, and context-based selection.

How a dynamic image is delivered

  1. The browser or app requests an image. The request may include a URL, headers, or other context that identifies the required rendition.
  2. The service locates the original asset. Depending on the system, the source may be held in a content platform, object storage, or an external origin.
  3. Rules determine the output. The service applies permitted operations such as resizing, cropping, compression, format conversion, overlays, or moderation.
  4. The result is returned and may be cached. A CDN can store a generated variant so later matching requests do not need to repeat the full origin workflow.

AWS documents sources from S3 or external HTTPS origins and supports transformations through query parameters or reusable policies in its solution overview and key concepts.

What can a dynamic-image system do?

  • Resize: create dimensions suited to a specific component or display without manually exporting every size.
  • Crop: prepare square, portrait, landscape, or thumbnail versions for different layouts.
  • Choose a subject-aware crop: focal-point tools or face detection can help keep important content in frame. They are not infallible, especially with edge-positioned subjects, multiple subjects, embedded text, or unusual product shapes. AWS lists smart cropping based on facial recognition and focal-point detection among its solution capabilities.
  • Convert formats: return formats such as JPEG, WebP, or AVIF where supported and appropriate. Adobe documents automatic format selection involving AVIF and WebP for Smart Imaging.
  • Adjust compression: reduce file size while balancing visual quality; overly aggressive settings can create blur, ringing, or banding.
  • Adapt delivery: select a rendition using breakpoints, viewport information, or device-pixel ratio.
  • Add overlays or compose assets: some providers support text, logos, labels, prices, watermarks, borders, or backgrounds. These are provider-specific capabilities, not a universal feature.
  • Personalize or moderate: systems may use a template and data to tailor an image, or detect and blur unsuitable user-uploaded imagery. AWS lists moderation through Amazon Rekognition as an optional capability.

These AWS capabilities, including device-aware optimization, are described on its features and benefits page. Adobe’s documentation also notes product-specific limits: Smart Imaging requires the out-of-the-box CDN bundled with AEM Dynamic Media and is unavailable to Dynamic Media Hybrid customers.

Benefits—and what they do not guarantee

  • Potentially smaller deliveries: matching dimensions, format, and compression to the use can avoid sending a needlessly large file.
  • Less repetitive asset work: a source image and approved rules can replace manually creating every size and crop.
  • More consistent presentation: centralized presets can apply the same crop and quality rules across a site or application.
  • Faster content operations: teams can adjust transformation rules without exporting every asset again.
  • More variations at scale: data-driven templates can create many campaign or catalog versions from shared assets.

None of these outcomes is automatic. Performance depends on source quality, transformation latency, cache hit rate, page markup, network conditions, and the number of distinct variants. Cloudinary describes using dynamic transformations with responsive HTML mechanisms such as <picture>, srcset, and sizes in its responsive image documentation.

Costs, risks, and design trade-offs

  • Processing and infrastructure: generating images on demand consumes resources; managed services also create dependence on a vendor’s service, pricing, and availability.
  • Cache variant growth: each distinct combination of dimensions, crop, format, quality, and user-specific data can create another cache variant.
  • Privacy and cache isolation: a shared cache must not return one person’s personalized image to another. Separate personalized responses from shared variants or use a carefully designed, privacy-preserving cache key.
  • Image quality and crop failures: upscaling a small source, excessive compression, or a poor automatic crop can harm the result. Faces, text, transparent logos, and edge-positioned subjects deserve special checks.
  • Layout shifts: omitting dimensions can make page content move while an image loads. Declare width and height in markup.
  • Abuse and security: unrestricted transformation URLs may invite costly or malicious requests. AWS lists request signing as a security capability, but signing and parameter limits are implementation choices, not guarantees built into every dynamic-image service.
  • Rights and policy: automated transformation does not grant permission to use an image. Google specifically requires advertisers enabling dynamic image assets to confirm they have appropriate image rights.

Implementation patterns and examples

Responsive selection in HTML

The following illustrates browser selection among responsive sources. The files could be generated in advance or produced by an image service; the markup alone does not make the images dynamically generated.

<picture>
  <source
    type="image/avif"
    srcset="/images/product-480.avif 480w, /images/product-960.avif 960w"
    sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 50vw">
  <img
    src="/images/product-960.jpg"
    alt="Blue backpack"
    width="960"
    height="720">
</picture>

The <picture> and srcset approach lets the browser choose an available source. Keep useful alternative text and intrinsic dimensions: image generation does not replace accessibility or layout responsibilities.

Illustrative transformation URL

A service might accept a request like this:

https://img.example.com/product.jpg?w=800&h=600&fit=crop&format=webp&q=80

This is illustrative only. Parameter names, allowed operations, signing, and format negotiation vary by provider; do not assume this syntax works with AWS, Adobe, Cloudinary, or another service. A preset or policy can centralize approved dimensions, crop behavior, format, and quality instead of allowing arbitrary values. AWS documents both query-parameter transformations and reusable policies in its key concepts.

Practical safeguards

  • Keep an untouched master asset and define approved transformation presets.
  • Allowlist parameters and validate dimensions, quality, and format; use signed URLs where appropriate.
  • Include transformation choices in the cache key, while excluding unnecessary personal information from cacheable URLs.
  • Provide a fallback image and a compatible format path for browsers that cannot use the preferred output.
  • Test crops on faces, products, embedded text, and transparent assets; use a manually set focal point when automated cropping fails.
  • Monitor cache hit rate, transformation errors, origin load, latency, and delivered image size.
  • Preserve relevant color-profile and metadata behavior, and test color appearance across target devices.

When to use dynamic images—and when not to

Dynamic delivery is a strong candidate when many device sizes, crops, formats, or frequently changing catalog assets make manual export burdensome. It can also make sense when centralized image rules or data-driven compositions are valuable enough to justify operating the transformation and cache layers.

A simpler approach may be preferable for a small site with few images, infrequent changes, or a CMS that already creates suitable responsive renditions. Alternatives include native responsive HTML, build-time image generation, CMS-generated crops, a CDN or dedicated image service, and—when the objective is ad creative selection—an advertising platform feature. Client-side transformation is often less suitable for performance-sensitive delivery if it requires downloading a large original first.

Questions to ask when evaluating a system

  • Which source and output formats, animation types, transparency, color profiles, and HDR cases are supported?
  • Can the system resize, crop, preserve focal points, overlay content, and deliver AVIF or WebP with fallbacks?
  • How are cache keys, cache controls, signing, abuse prevention, and transformation logs handled?
  • Does it integrate with the existing CMS, DAM, CDN, APIs, and deployment workflow?
  • What are the limits on source size and output dimensions, and what does the service meter—requests, transformations, storage, bandwidth, or seats?
  • Where is content processed and delivered, and what are the data-residency, migration, and vendor-dependency implications?

Common failures and fixes

  • Missing image: show a deliberate fallback or placeholder and log the missing source rather than leaving a broken image.
  • Invalid crop: fall back to a safe crop or the original aspect ratio; set a focal point for important subjects.
  • Blurry output: confirm the source is large enough, the service is not upscaling it, and compression is not too aggressive.
  • Slow delivery despite a CDN: inspect cache keys and cache-control settings, origin latency, transformation cold starts, and the number of unique variants.
  • Personalized image shown to the wrong person: separate personalized responses from shared cacheable transformations or use an appropriate private cache strategy.
  • Different appearance across devices: check color management, HDR/SDR rendering, browser support, and format-specific behavior. HDR is a separate rendering concern, as described in Apple’s HDR guidance.
