GIMP can turn a photograph into a black-and-white line drawing, contour sketch, stencil, or coloring-page image. The most reliable workflow is to duplicate the photo, desaturate it, improve contrast with Levels, apply Threshold or edge detection, and then clean the result manually. Because photographs contain shadows, texture, noise, and background detail, no automatic filter produces perfect line art from every image.

Choose the kind of line drawing you need

Before applying a filter, decide what “line drawing” means for your project:

  • Black-and-white posterized image: broad black and white areas, useful for stencils and simple prints.
  • Contour drawing: mostly visible edges with little interior shading.
  • Pencil sketch: tonal variation and texture remain visible.
  • Coloring page: clean dark outlines on a white background, with gray shading and clutter removed.
  • Technical or vector artwork: precise, scalable curves that generally require manual tracing in vector software.

GIMP’s normal conversion produces raster artwork made from pixels. It does not automatically create a true vector drawing.

Before you begin

This guide uses the GIMP 3.2.x interface. GIMP 3.2.4 was released on April 17, 2026; installers and packages are available from the official GIMP download page. Users of GIMP 2.10 may see different menu paths or filter controls.

Choose a photograph with a clear subject, reasonably strong contrast, even lighting, limited motion blur, and a simple background. Automatic conversion is more difficult with hair, fur, foliage, grass, fabric, JPEG artifacts, low-contrast subjects, backlighting, reflective objects, and strong shadows.

  1. Open the image with File → Open.
  2. Crop distracting areas before conversion.
  3. Save a working copy with File → Save As or File → Save, using GIMP’s .xcf format.
  4. Rename the original layer Original.
  5. Duplicate it with Layer → Duplicate Layer.
  6. Rename the duplicate Gray.

Keep the original hidden but available for comparison. Use duplicate layers and masks instead of erasing pixels whenever possible. A layer mask can hide or reveal part of a layer without deleting the underlying pixels; use Layer → Mask → Add Layer Masks…. See the GIMP layer-mask documentation.

The easiest method: Desaturate, Levels, and Threshold

This is the best starting point for a stark black-and-white result, especially a basic coloring page or stencil.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Desaturate the duplicate

With the Gray layer selected, choose Colors → Desaturate → Desaturate…. Start with Luminance or Luma, then inspect the preview. If important features disappear, try Lightness, Average, or Value.

These modes convert colors into different brightness relationships. Highly saturated colors can become surprisingly light or dark depending on the mode. Desaturation works on an RGB layer and keeps the image in RGB mode; it does not turn the document into a Grayscale-mode image. The GIMP desaturation documentation explains the available modes.

2. Improve contrast with Levels

Choose Colors → Levels…. Levels provides a black-point slider, a midpoint or gamma control, and a white-point slider.

  1. Move the black-point slider inward until weak dark details become clearer.
  2. Move the white-point slider inward until the background becomes lighter.
  3. Adjust the gray midpoint to preserve important facial features, contours, or interior details.

Do not crush every shadow before extracting the lines. If lighting is uneven, use Colors → Curves… for more targeted tonal adjustments. You may need to brighten a dark subject, reduce background contrast, or mask the background separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Apply Threshold

  1. Duplicate the adjusted layer.
  2. Rename the new layer Threshold line art.
  3. Choose Colors → Threshold….
  4. Drag the threshold controls until the subject is recognizable and unwanted dark areas are minimized.
  5. Click OK or Apply, depending on the dialog shown.

Threshold converts pixels into black or white according to their intensity. A lower cutoff preserves more dark detail but also keeps more noise and shadow. A higher cutoff creates larger white areas but may erase thin lines and facial features. There is no universal correct number; adjust it for the photograph.

Threshold removes anti-aliasing, so curves can look jagged. The GIMP Threshold documentation recommends Levels when smoother tonal transitions are important.

4. Clean the result

Add a white layer beneath the line art, then use a layer mask on the line-art layer to hide stray black regions. For small repairs, use the Pencil tool or a small hard Paintbrush. Use a soft brush only when a gradual transition is intentional.

Inspect the image at 100% and at its intended print size. Remove speckles, simplify busy regions, and preserve important details such as eyes, fingers, wires, and small lettering.

For contour drawings: use edge detection

Choose edge detection when you want outlines rather than large solid black shapes. First duplicate the photograph, desaturate it, and adjust contrast with Levels. Then look under Filters → Edge-Detect. Filter names and dialog layouts can vary between GIMP 2.10 and GIMP 3.x, so use GIMP’s menu search if the command is not where expected.

  1. Apply an edge-detection filter to the prepared duplicate.
  2. Adjust its radius or amount until major contours appear.
  3. Choose Colors → Invert if the result is white lines on a black background.
  4. Use Levels or Threshold to darken the lines and clean the background.
  5. Mask unwanted regions and place a white layer underneath.

Edge detection does not understand which edges are artistically meaningful. It detects changes in brightness, so it may emphasize wrinkles, texture, shadows, JPEG noise, foliage, and the two sides of a thick object. Treat the result as a starting point for cleanup, not as a finished illustration.

Combine Threshold and edge detection

For a more substantial intermediate result, keep both approaches on separate layers:

  1. Create a broad-shape layer named Threshold.
  2. Create a contour layer named Edges.
  3. Place Edges above Threshold.
  4. Reduce the edge layer’s opacity or try the Multiply blend mode.
  5. Add a white background and mask excessive interior detail.

This can preserve major contours while avoiding a result made entirely of disconnected edge fragments. Keep the layers separate until the design is finished; merge only a copy for export.

Make a clean coloring page

A coloring page normally needs solid black outlines, a white background, and little or no gray shading. Start with the Threshold workflow, then:

  • Remove background clutter with a mask or selection.
  • Paint gray residue white on a separate cleanup layer.
  • Repair broken contours with a hard Pencil brush.
  • Close gaps around regions that will later be colored.
  • Thicken lines that are too faint to print.
  • Check the result at its actual print size rather than only at extreme zoom.

Hair, fur, grass, fabric, and foliage often create too many small marks. Simplify these areas aggressively if the image is intended for children, worksheets, or stencil cutting. Preserve recognizable features instead of attempting to retain every photographic detail.

Create transparent line art

To place black lines over a different background, keep the line art on its own layer:

  1. Make sure the layer has an alpha channel.
  2. Select the white background by color, or create a mask from a selection.
  3. Hide the selected white areas with a mask, or delete them on a duplicate.
  4. Place the replacement background beneath the line-art layer.

Using a mask is safer than deleting white pixels because white highlights inside the subject may also be selected. If necessary, paint on the mask to restore those highlights. GIMP’s layer-mask options include white, black, alpha, selection, grayscale-copy, and channel-based masks.

Add color beneath the lines

GIMP 3 includes line-art detection in the Bucket Fill tool. It is designed for coloring enclosed regions, not for producing the initial line drawing.

  1. Keep the line art on the top layer.
  2. Create a blank color layer beneath it.
  3. Select the Bucket Fill tool.
  4. Choose Fill by line art detection.
  5. Set the appropriate visible layer or selected layer as the line-art source.
  6. Adjust the detection threshold and enable automatic closure if small gaps prevent filling.
  7. Repair larger gaps manually, then fill the region again.

A higher detection threshold detects more contour pixels. The automatic-closure maximum gap length is measured in pixels, and larger or irregular gaps may still require manual repair. The Bucket Fill documentation describes detection, closure, line growth, feathering, and border-stroking controls.

Fix common problems

The entire image becomes black

The photograph may be underexposed, dominated by shadows, or affected by an overly aggressive threshold. Undo the Threshold step, brighten the subject with Levels, try another desaturation mode, mask large shadows, or use edge detection instead.

The subject disappears

Thin details may fall below the threshold, or the source may lack sufficient contrast. Lower the cutoff, increase contrast, darken the subject selectively, or combine two duplicate layers with different settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is covered in speckles

Noise, JPEG compression, hair, foliage, and fabric can all create speckles. Apply only a small amount of blur before extraction, simplify the background, mask noisy regions, clean on a separate layer, or downscale after cleanup. Excessive blur can erase thin lines.

The background has more lines than the subject

Crop first, reduce the background’s contrast, blur or brighten it, mask it before edge detection, or paint unwanted areas white on a mask. A simpler original background often improves the result more than changing filters.

The lines are jagged

Threshold deliberately removes anti-aliasing. Start with a larger source, judge the image at its final size, use Levels when some gray transition is acceptable, and clean important contours manually. You can also create a larger finished image and downscale it for smoother apparent edges.

The result is white lines on black

Choose Colors → Invert, or place a white layer beneath the result and use a mask or blend adjustment to produce black lines on white.

A menu command is missing

Check the GIMP version. GIMP 2.10 tutorials may show shorter or different paths, while GIMP 3 documents desaturation under Colors → Desaturate → Desaturate…. Use GIMP’s menu search to find a command by name rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

When GIMP is not enough

GIMP is a good free choice for raster line art, printable references, coloring pages, and photo-derived underdrawings. It is not the best tool when the result must be geometrically precise, infinitely scalable, or ready for a plotter, CNC machine, laser cutter, logo system, or technical drawing.

For those projects, use GIMP to simplify and prepare the photograph, then manually trace it with paths in a vector application such as Inkscape or another vector editor. Automatic edge detection is not a substitute for deciding which curves matter or for producing clean, editable geometry.

Export without losing your editable work

Keep the layered .xcf file with the original image, adjustment layers, masks, threshold layer, edge layer, cleanup layer, and background. This is the version to reopen when you need to change the threshold or repair a detail.

Export a copy with File → Export As, as described in GIMP’s Export documentation:

  • PNG: generally preferable for crisp black-and-white lines, transparency, and repeated editing.
  • JPEG: suitable for compact casual sharing, though compression can soften or introduce artifacts around line edges.

Use a high-resolution source, export at the intended print size, and make one test print before producing multiple copies.

The practical decision

Use Desaturate → Levels → Threshold for a predictable black-and-white posterized result or coloring page. Use edge detection when you want contour-focused artwork, but expect more texture and manual cleanup. Use masks and separate layers to preserve flexibility, and move to vector tracing when the final artwork must scale cleanly or meet production standards.
