Apple’s current built-in way to make a 3D-looking, motion-responsive wallpaper is Spatial Scene. On supported iPhones running iOS 26 or later—and supported iPads running iPadOS 26 or later—it analyzes an ordinary 2D photo and creates a depth effect that shifts as you move the device.

The result is designed for the Lock Screen, not a fully spatial Home Screen. Older instructions may tell you to use Perspective Zoom; that is legacy terminology for an earlier wallpaper effect. Spatial Scene is the current feature to look for.

Spatial Scene, parallax, Perspective Zoom, and Depth Effect

“Parallax wallpaper” is the familiar description, while Spatial Scene is Apple’s current name for the feature. These terms describe different effects:

Feature What it does Current status
Spatial Scene Converts an eligible 2D photo into a depth-responsive scene that shifts as the device moves. Current Apple method on supported iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 devices.
Perspective Zoom Moves a conventional wallpaper slightly as the viewing angle changes. Legacy terminology; availability depends on the older iOS version and wallpaper.
Depth Effect Places a photo subject in front of parts of the Lock Screen clock or other elements. A separate Lock Screen effect, not the same as Spatial Scene.
Live Photo wallpaper Plays captured motion when the device wakes or is pressed, where supported. Motion-based, not necessarily a 3D or parallax effect.

Spatial Scene is also not a true stereoscopic photograph or an interactive 3D model. Apple describes it as a depth or parallax effect generated from a 2D image. See Apple’s design guidance on spatial scenes.

What you need

  • iPhone: iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26 or later.
  • iPad: A supported iPad model running iPadOS 26 or later. Apple’s Lock Screen instructions do not provide one universal model cutoff, so verify the feature directly on the iPad.
  • Photo: An image Apple considers suitable for spatial conversion.

Apple’s current iPhone requirements and photo guidance are listed in its Spatial Scene support article. Software compatibility alone does not guarantee that every spatial feature is available on every device.

How to create a Spatial Scene wallpaper on iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wallpaper.
  3. Tap Add New Wallpaper.
  4. Tap Photos.
  5. Scroll across the category bar and choose Spatial Scene.
  6. Select an eligible photo.
  7. Wait for the Generating Spatial Scene message to finish.
  8. Tap Add.
  9. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair, or tap Customize Home Screen to select a separate Home Screen treatment.

Move the iPhone gently from side to side on the Lock Screen to see the effect. Apple states that the 3D effect appears only on the Lock Screen. A paired Home Screen can use the same image, a color, blur, or another available treatment, but it does not receive the same Spatial Scene movement.

You can also begin with a photo outside the Spatial Scene category. During Lock Screen customization, Apple shows the Spatial Scene control when the selected image is eligible. Tap that control to turn the effect on or off.

For Apple’s current interface details, see the iPhone Lock Screen guide.

How to create one on iPad

  1. Press the iPad’s top button to wake it.
  2. Touch and hold the Lock Screen.
  3. Tap the Add New Lock Screen wallpaper button.
  4. Choose a photo.
  5. If the iPad and image support the feature, tap Spatial Capture.
  6. Pinch and drag the photo to adjust its position.
  7. Add widgets and adjust the clock if desired.
  8. Finish and apply the Lock Screen.

Apple’s iPad documentation uses spatial scene when describing the result and Spatial Capture for the control in the editor. The exact options can vary with the iPad model, software, and selected photo. The iPad Lock Screen guide documents both Spatial Capture and the separate Depth Effect control.

Choose a photo that can create convincing depth

Apple says eligible images typically have good lighting, clear separation between the subject and background, or a landscape orientation. Those are guidelines rather than guarantees, but they are useful when choosing an image.

Photos that usually make better candidates

  • A person or object clearly separated from its background.
  • A landscape containing foreground, middle-distance, and background elements.
  • A subject with clean edges around hair, shoulders, buildings, trees, or other prominent details.
  • A subject that is not cropped tightly against the edge of the frame.
  • A reasonably sharp, well-lit, high-quality image.
  • A composition with empty space for the clock and Lock Screen widgets.

Photos that often cause problems

  • Flat graphics, logos, screenshots, or text-heavy images.
  • Dark, blurry, noisy, or heavily compressed photos.
  • A subject blending into a similarly colored background.
  • Overlapping group photos with ambiguous edges.
  • Close-ups that fill the entire frame.
  • Subjects touching the edge or cut off by the original crop.
  • Images with strong motion blur.

Spatial conversion is only half the composition. The Lock Screen clock and widgets still occupy space, so a photo that looks good in your library may need repositioning—or may simply be a poor wallpaper candidate.

Position the image for the Lock Screen

  • Leave breathing room around the main subject.
  • Keep important facial features away from the clock.
  • Avoid placing essential details near the bottom, where controls or widgets may interfere.
  • Use pinch-to-zoom and drag gestures to reposition the photo.
  • Try both portrait and landscape source images; the device may crop them differently.
  • Prefer a wider image when the scene needs room to reveal apparent depth.
  • Avoid text in the image unless you are comfortable with the clock or widgets covering it.

Apple confirms that the Lock Screen editor supports pinching and dragging, and that available options vary by wallpaper. See the iPhone guide or iPad guide.

If the Spatial Scene option is missing

Check these possibilities in order:

  1. Confirm the software. The iPhone needs iOS 26 or later; the iPad needs iPadOS 26 or later.
  2. Check the iPhone model. Apple’s documented baseline is iPhone 12 or later.
  3. Try another image. Choose a well-lit landscape photo with a clearly separated subject.
  4. Use the correct editor. On iPhone, go to Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos. On iPad, touch and hold the Lock Screen to create a new one.
  5. Look for the alternate label. iPhone documentation calls the feature Spatial Scene; the iPad editor may show Spatial Capture.
  6. Do not confuse Depth Effect with Spatial Scene. Depth Effect may be available even when the viewpoint-responsive control is not.

If the control never appears after updating and trying several suitable photos, the cause may be an unsupported model, an ineligible image, or another device-specific limitation. Apple’s iPad instructions refer to supported models rather than promising the feature on every iPad that runs iPadOS 26.

If the wallpaper looks flat after you apply it

A flat result does not identify one confirmed cause by itself. The effect may not have been applied, the final wallpaper arrangement may differ from the preview, or the device may have encountered a temporary software or rendering problem.

  1. Delete the wallpaper and create a new one.
  2. Try an Apple Photos image with a clear foreground subject.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Install the latest available software update.
  5. Create a new Lock Screen instead of editing an older wallpaper.
  6. Confirm that the Spatial Scene or Spatial Capture control was enabled before applying it.

If the control is absent, treat that as a compatibility or photo-eligibility issue rather than a hidden global “parallax” switch.

If the photo is cropped badly

  • Pinch out slightly to reduce the crop.
  • Drag the image until the subject sits in a clear area.
  • Remove or reposition widgets.
  • Choose a wider photo with more background around the subject.
  • Try a different image if the subject remains cut off.

The spatial effect needs room around the subject, while the Lock Screen layout consumes additional space. A wider source image often gives the editor more flexibility.

What if you want movement on the Home Screen?

Apple’s current iPhone instructions limit the Spatial Scene 3D effect to the Lock Screen. You can customize the Home Screen with a matching still image, color, blur, or wallpaper pair, but it should not be described as having the same viewpoint-responsive effect.

App-based animated wallpapers may offer a different experience, but they are not Apple’s built-in Spatial Scene feature and may provide only downloadable still images or app-specific animations. Check an app’s actual behavior, privacy terms, advertising, account requirements, and compatibility before installing it. For example, Backdrops – Spatial Wallpapers is an optional iPhone source of ready-made designs; it should not be assumed to generate native Spatial Scenes from your personal photos.

Alternatives to Spatial Scene

Depth Effect

Choose Depth Effect when you want the photo’s subject to overlap the clock or create a layered Lock Screen composition. It does not provide the same device-movement-responsive scene.

Live Photo wallpaper

Choose a Live Photo when you want a short captured-motion animation rather than generated depth. It is not equivalent to Spatial Scene, and its behavior depends on the current Lock Screen support and the particular Live Photo.

Manually designed layered artwork

A design program can separate foreground and background elements or prepare a carefully cropped image. That may improve the source composition, but it does not guarantee that Apple will accept the result as a Spatial Scene.

Legacy note: Perspective Zoom

If an older tutorial tells you to open wallpaper settings and enable Perspective Zoom, it is describing an earlier iOS feature, not the current iOS 26 workflow. Older Apple documentation also says Perspective Zoom is unavailable when Reduce Motion is enabled. Do not automatically apply that rule to Spatial Scene unless current Apple documentation for your device says it applies.

For historical reference, see Apple’s older Perspective Zoom instructions.
