Ideogram is best understood as a design-focused AI image platform, not just a text-to-image prompt box. It is particularly useful for posters, advertisements, branding concepts, social graphics, covers, and other images where readable typography and deliberate layouts matter. The current flagship is Ideogram 4.0, released in June 2026, although the interface, plans, and available controls can change.
For most people, the simplest workflow is to use the web app: write a prompt, generate several candidates, then refine the strongest result with Remix, Magic Fill, Extend, Canvas, references, background tools, or upscaling.
What is Ideogram AI?
Ideogram turns text prompts into images and provides an integrated set of editing and design tools. In addition to generating images, you can remix an existing result, fill selected areas, extend an image beyond its original borders, arrange work on an infinite Canvas, remove backgrounds, describe uploaded images, and upscale results.

- Social-media graphics
- Book, album, and product-cover concepts
- Print-on-demand designs and mockups
- Typography experiments
- Illustrations, concept art, and campaign visuals
Ideogram’s typography focus does not make it a replacement for professional design software. Important spelling, layout, branding, trademark, and production decisions still require human review. A generated logo should generally be treated as a concept until it has been redrawn and legally assessed.
Ideogram 4.0: what is current
As of September 2026, Ideogram’s current flagship is Ideogram 4.0. Ideogram describes it as an open-weight model built for prompt fidelity, typography, layout control, editing, and realistic 2K images. Those are the company’s product claims, not an independent benchmark.
The company says 4.0 uses a vision-language encoder, diffusion transformer, flow-matching sampling, and structured JSON captions. You do not need to understand those technologies—or write JSON—to use the app. The practical difference for users is that 4.0 is designed to respond more literally and structurally to clearly organized instructions than older versions.
Ideogram is available through three main routes:
| Route | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Web app | Beginners, designers, and visual iteration | Subscription and app-credit limits |
| Hosted API | Products, automation, and batch generation | Requires development work and separate billing |
| Open weights and self-hosting | Infrastructure control, customization, and data residency | Requires hardware, licensing, deployment, and maintenance |
How to start using Ideogram
- Go to the official Ideogram website.
- Sign in or create an account.
- Open the image-generation interface.
- Enter a prompt in the prompt box.
- Choose the available model, rendering speed or quality, aspect ratio, style, and output count.
- Click Generate.
- Review the generated set and select the strongest image for further editing or download.
The exact labels and locations can vary by account, device, plan, and current interface. Controls may appear in the generation panel or under an image’s More menu. Ideogram’s documentation describes actions including retrying, reusing, remixing, upscaling, describing, opening an image in Canvas, and editing it.

Decide the output before you prompt
Choose the intended use first. A poster, phone story, presentation banner, product cutout, and square social graphic need different compositions and aspect ratios.
- Portrait: posters, phone screens, and stories
- Landscape: banners, presentations, and thumbnails
- Square: profile graphics and many social posts
Choosing the format early gives the subject and text enough room. If the subject is likely to be cropped, explicitly request a wide composition, full-body framing, or generous negative space.
How to write an effective Ideogram prompt
A reliable prompt separates the important design decisions instead of listing disconnected style adjectives:
[subject and action], [composition and viewpoint], [environment and background], [lighting and mood], [color palette], [medium or visual style], [exact visible text and placement], [format or layout requirement]
For example:
A modern coffee shop poster showing a steaming ceramic cup on a marble counter, centered composition, warm morning sunlight, muted terracotta and cream palette, editorial food photography, clean negative space around the headline, large readable headline at the top: “SUNDAY ROAST”, smaller text beneath the image: “Fresh coffee from 8 AM”, portrait poster layout
Prompting principles that matter
- Put the main subject and essential text instructions near the beginning.
- Put exact wording in quotation marks or identify it explicitly as visible text.
- Describe where text belongs: “large headline at the top” or “small caption beneath the image.”
- Specify alignment, margins, symmetry, viewpoint, and the amount of negative space.
- Use concrete descriptions such as “muted terracotta and cream” rather than only “beautiful colors.”
- Name the medium or production style: screen print, watercolor, flat vector illustration, editorial photography, or 3D product render.
- Request only the words that genuinely need to appear.
- Generate several candidates rather than treating the first result as final.
- For a series, preserve the successful prompt and change one variable at a time.
More words are not automatically better. Contradictory instructions such as “minimalist, highly detailed, crowded, and spacious” give the model competing goals. Precise requirements are more useful than a long adjective list.

Ideogram’s 4.0 prompting guide explains that JSON-style organization can help describe a scene, text elements, layout regions, colors, lighting, and individual objects. JSON is optional in the app. Plain-language prompting is the right starting point for most users.
Magic Prompt: when to use it
Magic Prompt expands or rewrites a short idea into a richer image instruction. It can help beginners move from “a cozy bookstore poster” to a more detailed composition with lighting, palette, typography, and environmental detail.
Use it when you want:
- Help turning a rough concept into a complete prompt
- More descriptive scenes and visual variety
- Faster exploration of an unfamiliar style
Reduce your reliance on it when exact brand language, controlled experiments, consistent iteration, or a precise composition matters. An expanded prompt can introduce extra objects, colors, or wording that you did not request. Ideogram’s current 4.0 guidance says Magic Prompt is automatically enabled on the live 4.0 experience; availability and controls may change.
Choosing models and rendering settings
The generation panel may expose model or version, rendering speed or quality, aspect ratio, style, and the number of images. The available choices depend on the current interface and plan.
- Turbo: faster and cheaper, useful for exploring ideas.
- Default: a general-purpose balance.
- Quality: slower and more expensive, useful for final candidates or demanding typography.
The official API pricing page currently lists Ideogram 4.0 at $0.03 per image for Turbo, $0.06 for Default, and $0.10 for Quality. These are API prices, not a conversion table for app credits.
How to use Remix
Remix creates new variations from an existing image while retaining some of its composition or visual influence.
- Generate or upload an image.
- Choose Remix.
- Change one or two variables, such as clothing, palette, setting, or props.
- Adjust image influence or weight if that control is available.
- Generate variations and keep the strongest result.
Greater source-image influence usually preserves more of the original composition but gives the prompt less freedom. Lower influence creates more variation but can lose the original layout, subject, or identity. The precise slider name and range may vary.

How to use Magic Fill
Magic Fill is Ideogram’s inpainting tool. It replaces or adds content inside a selected area while attempting to preserve the surrounding image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the image in Canvas.
- Select Magic Fill.
- Mask the area to change.
- Click Next.
- Resize or reposition the generation window.
- Include nearby image content for lighting, texture, and perspective context.
- Describe the replacement or addition.
- Click Magic Fill and compare the options.
For a believable edit, the generation window should include the masked area plus meaningful surrounding context. The official Magic Fill documentation specifically warns that context helps the tool match the existing image.
Magic Fill troubleshooting
- Mask too small: the replacement may not match lighting, perspective, or anatomy.
- Mask too large: unrelated details may change.
- Little surrounding context: the inserted object may look pasted in.
- Vague prompt: the result may fit the words but not the scene.
- Text inside the mask: lettering may be regenerated incorrectly.
How to use Extend and Canvas
Extend an image
Extend expands an image beyond its original boundaries. In Canvas, position the generation window over the new area and part of the existing image, then describe what should continue outside the frame.
- Open the image in Canvas.
- Choose Extend.
- Place the generation window over the new area and enough of the original image to establish continuity.
- Describe the continuation, including horizon, camera angle, lighting, surface, and background elements.
- Generate several options and repeat with a narrower prompt if necessary.
Common failures include repeated objects at the seam, inconsistent horizons, changed subject proportions, mismatched lighting, and duplicated text or logos.
Use Canvas as a design board
Canvas is an infinite board for generating, editing, and arranging images. You can choose Generate, Remix, Magic Fill, Extend, or Text, define the working area, adjust available options, review results, and move images into a larger composition.
According to the Canvas documentation, Generate and Remix place four images on the Canvas, while Magic Fill and Extend provide one placement with four options to review. Canvas is useful when a single generation is not enough—for example, when combining a background, product concept, lettering, and alternate visual elements.
Use image references
Depending on your plan and current interface, uploaded images can serve several purposes:

Ideogram’s documentation says image upload is available to Plus and higher plans. Do not assume every free account can upload references.
Remove backgrounds, upscale, and download
Use background removal for product cutouts, stickers, profile images, and compositing. Ideogram’s documentation describes a transparent PNG option. Inspect hair, fingers, transparent objects, and fine edges manually before using the cutout.

Use upscaling when the composition is correct but the exported image needs more resolution. The image-generation documentation currently describes upscaling up to 2×.
For export:
- PNG: preferable when transparency or a higher-quality design asset is needed, where available.
- JPG: suitable for ordinary web graphics when compression is acceptable.
The documentation says free-plan downloads are slightly compressed JPGs, while paid-plan downloads can be uncompressed PNG files. Plan entitlements and export options can change, so confirm the current download menu before relying on a particular format.
Is Ideogram free?
Ideogram offers a free tier for learning and experimentation, but free access may have restrictions involving generation volume, visibility, uploads, editing features, or exports. The official plan documentation also identifies Basic as a legacy plan that is no longer available to new customers.
An official documentation page observed before the current Ideogram 4.0 launch listed these figures:
| Plan | Monthly price shown | Annual price shown |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | Free |
| Basic | $8/month | $84/year |
| Plus | $20/month | $180/year |
| Pro | $60/month | $504/year |
| Team | $30/member/month, minimum two members | Not clearly shown |
Because the cited plan page may lag the live checkout, treat those figures as observed documentation rather than guaranteed current prices. Check Ideogram’s live pricing page before subscribing. Credit use varies by model and rendering setting, and app subscriptions are separate from API billing.

Can you use Ideogram images commercially?
Ideogram’s current licensing information says it does not claim ownership of outputs generated with the model and permits commercial use subject to its terms, third-party rights, and Acceptable Use Policy. That permission is not the same as a guarantee of copyright protection or legal clearance.
You remain responsible for:
- Trademarks and confusingly similar branding
- Publicity and likeness rights
- Copyrighted reference images or styles
- Client permissions and confidential material
- Accurate and non-misleading advertising
Do not assume that paying for Ideogram clears a generated logo, celebrity likeness, product design, or borrowed reference image. Review important commercial work with an appropriate legal or brand professional. The licensing terms also prohibit using outputs to train models that compete with Ideogram.
App, API, or self-hosting?
Choose the app when
- A person will select and refine results.
- The work is exploratory or moderate in volume.
- You need Canvas and visual editing controls.
- You do not want to manage infrastructure.
Choose the API when
- Generation must be embedded in a product.
- Prompts come from a database or automated workflow.
- You need per-image API pricing and programmatic requests.
- Your team can handle authentication, storage, moderation, and error handling.
The developer API is billed separately from an app subscription. The current API documentation lists a default limit of 10 in-flight requests.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose self-hosting when
Self-hosting may suit organizations that need infrastructure control, data residency, internal deployment, or customization. Ideogram uses the term open weights; that does not mean unrestricted commercial use.
The current licensing page says public quantized weights are free for research, evaluation, prototyping, and personal projects under a noncommercial agreement. Commercial self-hosting requires an appropriate commercial license. The page lists a self-serve commercial license starting at $300 per month when billed annually, associated with a 10,000-image monthly allowance. Customer-facing products, third-party access, full-precision weights, larger volumes, and custom legal terms generally require an Enterprise arrangement.
Practical first-image workflow
- Define the output: decide the use, aspect ratio, text density, and whether transparency is needed.
- Write a structured prompt: specify subject, composition, setting, lighting, palette, style, visible text, and layout.
- Generate several candidates: judge the set, not one image.
- Choose the strongest composition: do not immediately rewrite everything.
- Fix locally: use Remix for variations, Magic Fill for a selected error, Extend for missing space, Canvas for broader composition, Remove Background for cutouts, and Upscale for resolution.
- Proofread: inspect spelling, punctuation, repeated letters, alignment, spacing, hierarchy, and small text.
- Export appropriately: use PNG where transparency or higher-quality output is required and JPG where ordinary web compression is acceptable.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Misspelled text | Too much copy or a crowded layout | Shorten the wording, make the text prominent, simplify the design, generate multiple candidates, and correct important copy manually. |
| Subject is cropped | Wrong aspect ratio or weak framing instructions | Specify portrait or landscape, request full-body or wide framing, or use Extend. |
| Magic Fill changes unrelated details | Mask is too large or poorly placed | Reduce the mask and include more relevant surrounding context. |
| Edit looks pasted in | Insufficient context for lighting and perspective | Expand the generation window and describe the local light, surface, and viewpoint. |
| Extend creates a seam | Continuity was not described | Mention the horizon, camera angle, lens, lighting, surface, and recurring background elements. |
| Character identity changes | Weak or absent reference | Use Character Reference where available and make smaller, incremental changes. |
| Upload is unavailable | Plan restriction | Check whether the account supports image uploads. |
| Download is compressed | Free-plan export limitation | Check current plan entitlements and available PNG export options. |
| Results are generic | Prompt uses only broad style adjectives | Add composition, relationships between subjects, colors, viewpoint, and exact text. |
| Work appears publicly | Private Mode was not enabled | Confirm visibility before generation and do not upload confidential material casually. |
When Ideogram is—and is not—the right tool
Ideogram is a strong fit when an image needs prominent text, a poster-like layout, branding exploration, or an integrated generate-and-edit workflow. It is less suitable when you need deterministic pixel-perfect artwork, precise vector output, legally cleared trademark designs, guaranteed character identity, or strict confidentiality without first verifying the privacy settings and applicable terms.
For a beginner, start with the app and plain-language prompts. Move to the API when generation becomes part of a software workflow. Consider self-hosting only when infrastructure control, deployment requirements, or data policies justify the additional hardware and licensing complexity.
